I have been wondering about the decision myself. Does 3G drive up prices, drive down battery life, have limited coverage, ...?

On a side note, the US Trade Commission has recently banned imports of new cell phones made with chips from Qualcomm (part of a patent suit with Broadcom). This will effect new models (current models were grandfathered in) that use EVDO and WCDMA effecting both Verizon and Sprint Nextel.

This might keep future iPhone competitors using 3G networks out of the US for a while.

afaik, 3g decreases battery life and increases size. From what I heard, Apple didn't like the size increases from adding 3g.

not in apple stores

You won't leave the store with an iPhone without signing a contract. They absolutely will not jointly sign a contract with you for service without checking your credit first.

Apple stores will not be handling new ATT contracts.

Look, the iPhone may never drop down in price. More features, a mini model, but Apple does not drop the price easily.

So ATT could offer a simple and cheap plan and it would sell far more phones and bring in far more customers than a plan that's too steep.

I like the iPhone bundle for $60 per month that includes voice and data. At this point, the competition will go virtually free for the slow data plans, so why not.

Then what is to stop me from buying an iPhone at an Apple store and using my existing SIM card. I would have a basic phone and the best iPod. If wifi would work then great, but even without data connectivity I would buy it without a contract.

I can't imagine that you would be able to buy one at an Apple store and not have to sign a contract before leaving.

edit: Unless the SIM card is fixed and can't be removed. But if it is then why is there a SIM card door?

Nothing

Nothing would stop you. That's what the reps on the phone and at the local corporate store have told me. But, as soon as your phone starts requesting GPRS data (email, web or otherwise) then you will be charged for it--and dearly if you don't already have a data plan.

The main article also says that it will limit how many phones can be bought per customer, which means that unless you're setting up multiple plans, you can take the thing home and get phone service started via your iTunes account.

Now, there's a lot of speculation on this and all I know is that I was told that my existing ATT sim and voice/data plan will work, all I have to do is insert the SIM card. Nobody knows for sure though so I could be but ass wrong, but I will definitely be in the Apple store with my sim card ready to put in the phone and see if it works.

Folks,

Check this out... I confirmed it with two stores.

You can only purchase an iPhone IF you are eligible for an upgrade OR you purchase a new line.

So if you currently have a Cingular/at&t plan and you are not eligible for an upgrade you cannot purchase an iPhone... Unless you add a line for an extra 9.99 a month. Which also means you will need a separate data plan for the iPhone as well.

If you dont believe this call your local store... they have this info.

It has been confirmed by more stores that anyone can buy the iPhone regardless of upgrade eligibility. I personally have talked to 5 stores in various parts of the country. If you are under a current contract, it will extend it 2 years from date of purchase.

That would be great if my local store would just agree thats what supposed to be done. I am getting real nervous as I spoke with the Mgr at the store and he claims I will have to add a line and that you cannot extend your plan.

Personally, what you have been told sounds much more reasonable... why would they screw existing non-upgradeable customers.

3G issue with Cingular/AT&T

I don't think the issue with 3G is that the bandwidth is not there. I think it has to do with the fact that their 3G network coverage is pathetic.

Go to their website and take a look at their maps for coverage. I just checked and all of NY state is still EDGE. The only 3G is down in NYC and Long Island. Which is kind of funny because the Cingular rep was telling me back in February that 3G was "definitely going to be in Watertown/Syracuse by June of this year"...... yeah... OK.

Actually I think it is quite the opposite...

Because your current phone was subsidized with your original contract. If not, people who are going to buy an iPhone anyway could have got a nice extra phone for somebody (G/F, children, etc.) for free in the last 2 months and now get an iPhone with a new two years starting on June 29 2007.

I guess what I mean is that it sounds unreasonable to expect that you can get away from a contract you signed to get a phone for free, or a really low price.

That's what was said when I got my Treo...but, since I won the phone, ie, didn't purchase thru Cingular, they didn't know what phone I had. I added the $19.99 unlimited data plan (not the PDA plan) and began using the Treo...I download over 50 mb per month, and have never been called on it.

If you could simply insert the ATT chip...you'd be good to go, but that will likely not be the case...I would imagine when you sign the 2 yr agreement...you will be required to sign whatever data plan they offer...

interesting...

This person has an interesting take on iPhone costs:

http://www.centernetworks.com/true-cost-of-the-iphone

Yeah, when you add things up like that, one big lump sum, it really puts things into perspective. Just depends on where your priorities are. Some people spend thousands on tattoos, others on crack...

Ladies and gents let the iPhone replace your crack, hooker or tattoo habit.

It's About Time

Why do so many people think these plans will be so expensive? Looking at Cingular's current plans, unlimited data goes for $20/month and 450 minutes of voice goes for $40/month. Even at 900 minutes, the most you'll be paying for is $80/month.

In terms of web browsing, the iPhone doesn't use more data, it simply displays it in its true form. In turn, I guess that could lead to more demand for bandwidth since using the web on the phone will be so much easier, but for all intents and purposes, it's no different than a smart phone.

For those of you who say we need it for tethering purposes (i.e. using the phone as a modem...much more expensive), I think that will be pretty rare. You can already get email, calendar, contacts, and internet on the iPhone...using the iPhone as a modem for your laptop will be pretty rare to start, I think.

Other thoughts?

I just purchased a Sierra Wireless card for my Laptop and the cheapest data plan (unlimited) was $59.99. Remember the iPhone ad "the real internet" which is what you would use a broadband card for with your laptop and this card is EDGE & 3G (Faster than a full ISDN connection). As mentioned a week ago when the training manual was posted, the manual stated that AT&T Media-net was not supported. Since the Sierra Card used a regular SIM card with phone number I plan to share SIM card between my Laptop and iPhone when just the phones browsing and e-mail capabilities prove inadequate (uploading web page changes). If that is not the case, I have 30 days to return my Sierra card for a full refund minus my data usage. See you in line. And we will see how the plans pan out hopefully in our favor at least will have time to convince our significant others that the expenditure is justified.

There is no way you can use the iPhone without having an unlimited data plan. It loses much of it's usefulness without the Internet, and this device is going to be nothing like existing devices in how you use the Internet. Besides the outlaying cost of the phone itself, the data plan can be a deal killer if it's too high.

Actually, you are completely wrong. I've confirmed with 3 people at Apple (one of which was upper management) and they confirmed that if you are lucky enough to be within range of WiFi connectivity, you will never need AT&T's data plan...

What really makes virtually no sense is that you have to pay for a crazy $45 unlimited plan that is set up to work 1st and foremost via wifi and only switch to edge when it can't connect. Which will probably be the greater % of time. Whereby helping Cingular out! This is F'ed up is you ask me...

And really there is just not enough wifi open spots to make this a real plus... go figure.

... and luckily for me (and many people of the main target audience that will have the largest supplies of iPhones; i.e. New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago) I have almost non-stop open WiFi between my home and my work (man I LOVE Pasadena!) so again, you may never need AT&T's data plan and if you do, we still don't know how much it will be, so stop all of the ridiculous speculations until the announcement! (it will be very reasonable.)

Again, not true. The Apple reps told me I can walk out of the Apple store with the iPhone and it will be fully functional including full web connectivity (internet, email, Google maps) but I just won't be able to use it as a phone or use the Edge data network (why would I with WiFi!?) They also said that, of course, if I do want to use it as a phone with Edge, to simply go to or call AT&T to activate it. I'm already an AT&T customer and have confirmed this with them as well along with upgrading my current phone even though technically I'm not eligible yet (but this will be waived.) Apple will NOT be activating phones at the Apple stores!

Does anyone know if you have to physically go to an ATT store for activation?
From what I've read from the rumor mill you have to go to the store and have the ATT service guys activate it for you. It would be nice to go to the Apple Store and purchase the phone and then call ATT for activation.

If you are NOT an AT&T customer, you must go into the store to get a new sim card and have them activate it. If you ARE an AT&T customer then you can put in your existing sim card, call AT&T and they will activate it over the phone.

Real Question

I am an existing ATT customer who is still bound by a 2 years contract.

Now, I am fine with paying $500-600 pricetag, I am fine with signing another 2 years, and I am fine with paying a premium price for getting a new phone before my contract ends...BUT the question is, CAN I?

Can I get an iPhone if I am already in a 2 years contract? For other devices for example, I will be able to do that by paying for the full price. e.g. If I want a BlackBerry 8800, I simply can just pay $499 and get it without worrying about contract. But for iPhone, since $500-600 seems to be the full price, does that mean I can also pay for it even if I am in contract already?

I want to know!

If you would have bothered to read my post directly above your post you would have seen that I answered that already. The part about "upgrading my current phone even though I'm not eligible yet" (still in contract) but they are waiving this, allowing people to upgrade to the iPhone and then renew their contracts.

Im moe curious as to what extra costs there might be, for example. The phone is 499$, so plus tax(obvious) thats 538(ish). So will there be a sign up with at&t to get my 2 year contract goign or do i just pay for the phone and i am set?

Dude, like you're so wrong or iPhone Brain Freeze. Yah great that you have that open wifi in that little old ladies town of Pasadena. So why should you have to be paying for a STUPID unlimited data plan if you're never gonna use it? like I said, go figure...

Again, as I mentioned, you do NOT, I repeat NOT have to pay for the data plan at all! What is wrong with you people? Don't you read!!!

I was trying to give actual information to dispel misconceptions, why would that be useless... on the other hand, you are just being a jerk, "dude". That seems pretty useless...

Does anyone know if the iPhone counts as a computer (or an iPod) as far as itunes DRM is concerned?
