Get the HTC Thunderbolt. You won't regret it.

Thunderbolt > Droid X

Thunderbolt > iPhone 4

Anyone who tells you anything different is delusional/isn't smart enough for a smartphone.

I'm surprised you own one then. I guess your phone must be your brain. Slow and delusional.

Now guys stay friendly! And thanks for the constructive comments.

Based on my prejudices, I'm leaning heavily towards iPhone so basically I need to be talked out of the iPhone. This is not a challenge, just an observation. This does not mean I am blind. I will pick the technically superior device if I see it as such. :p

Several DroidX vs iPhone issues I've nailed down.
For importing my work schedule- iCrewMax has a a Firefox addon that works on Firefox mobile. So this should work on iPhone.
Cozy Calendar- that allows you to keep multiple calendars synched between two phones, going as far as synching up a shopping list, with check mark boxes when something is purchased has an iPhone app.

Unknowns:
*Free Tethering- Easy Tether has been said to work well on DroidX. I have no idea what the status is on iPhone.
*Voice Recognition- As described below in No.3, I have seen this demod on a Droid and it is impressive. I assume that Google Voice Commands work just fine on the iPhone?

Point for a Droid X

1. The Android OS is amazing and well designed
2. As you said it has Google Navigation (with voice and street view) which you can't get on iPhone yet
3. Google voice commands are amazing, I can double tap the Home key and say call Whole Foods and it looks up the closest one and dials the number without me having to do anything
4. When my phone receives a call it pops up a notification on my Mac and mutes iTunes while on my call.
5. Android is so customizable, it really helps that new toy itch in the fact I can change it so much.
6. Flash, yes it really is that big of a deal and one of the things that bothered me to no end when I had iOS

That all being said (and there are many more points) both phones are incredible and you'll honestly be happy either way. So get out and play with both and make your decision.

If you have any questions about the Droid X feel free to message me, Id love to help you decide.

Thanks for your help. I appreciate it! :)

I have them both and like them equally.

They are simply different, very different from each other.

Android is a true handheld computer (with a phone) with a file system that is readily accessible and quite useful.

The iPhone is an iPod (with a phone).

To proclaim one as far superior to the other is nonsense. We have choices to celebrate. They each have their pros and cons and it's up to the individual user as to his or her preferences.

Does'nt the iPhone not have an accessible and useful file system?

AFAIK, iCrewMax is only available for Android.

The iPhone doesn't have the actual Firefox browser, so the desktop plugin isn't going to help.

The closest you can come, is to use the Firefox plugin on your Mac to download the schedule, and then mail it to your phone. Supposedly it will import it.

On the iPhone, you have to open a voice input app.

Android has voice input everywhere that keyboard input is taken. I rarely type replies to IMs or text messages anymore... I just dictate them. Ditto for searches, it's so easy to just "ask the phone" instead of trying to type.

Thanks for clarifying. Somehow I got it in my head Firefox mobile worked on iPhone.... Now I have to look at workarounds. Why not use the iCrewMax addon on your Mac's Firefox, then import it to your Google Calendar, and then synch your Google calendar on your Mac with your iPhone's Google calendar?

First, you're talking about software unlocked phones*. Second, the only people who lose their software unlocks are idiots who don't bother to take the proper precautions when updating their phone. If they take the proper precautions when updating, they keep their software unlock. The ones who don't take the necessary precautions are the idiots too lazy to research.
JB, just like rooting on Android, requires a bit of learning on your part. If you don't enjoy reading, neither are for you.
*Software unlock requires jb. JB can happen without the software unlock, but not vice versa. They're not interchangeable.
Maybe I said it incorrectly. If you were using a jailborken iPhone outside of the ATT network and applied an Apple update, you might not be able to use that phone on the alternative network after the update. This would suck if you had a contract on the other network. At one point, this was an issue, but as I said, maybe this situation no longer exists.

Tethering requires a 'tethering addon' (+$20 p.m. and you get an additional 2GB, total=4GB of on-device and other device usage). You can get it for free if you jailbreak though.

You have to open the Google app and either place the phone up to your ear or tap the Voice Search button to get voice recog. Keep in mind that this is for Voice Search ONLY. You won't be able to say 'navigate to xxx' and get GMaps instructions or 'call barnes and noble' to call the nearest B&N like you would on an Android phone. Jailbreak or not the stock Voice Control can't be modified (pretty useless imo).

File system on the iPhone is locked down, unlike Android. If you jailbreak you can install a file explorer.

Hope this helps with your decision. Can't help with your calendar issue I'm afraid.

(fwiw- (gonna get killed for this!) I have two iPhone 4s and I'm using a Nexus S as my daily phone atm- superior in most ways IMO (and I stress IMO). Android is no longer the laggy mess it was two years ago- it's mostly smooth and polished these days.)

Thanks for clarifying. I should have not used the word brick.

Thanks for the info! The voice abilities (call and navigate) on the DroidX that I saw was pretty incredible. Maybe I should wait until the iPhone5 to see what develops there? However, no matter how good the phone is I will resist paying $500 per phone, period. My work associate who bought two DroidXs got them for about $250 each after rebate.

I have experience with all of these phones and imho - Atrix > iphone4 > Thunderbolt > DroidX. The DroidX2 will be coming out in a few weeks you may want to wait.

personally coming from an droid incredible i didnt have too many issues with android itself. However the incredible vs. the iphone 4, i wanted a device that took good video and photos as well as good battery life. I have yet to find a stock android device that could match the iphone's battery. So even though android is much more flexible then iOS i wanted the phone that fit my requirements best. The iphone 4 won... being the UI is a bit plain jane, the performance is still the best!

Re: battery life. No matter what kind of smartphone I get (except for the iPhone), I always immediately buy an extended battery that fits inside it.

Usually that adds at least a couple more hours of usage.

It also leaves me with the original as a spare that I can leave charging. It's great to be able to come home with a nearly depleted phone, and just swap in a fresh battery to go the rest of the night.

Also handy when camping or if the power goes out. Triple handy when my daughter chews up a battery watching TV :)

I always say that my devices should serve my needs, when I want, not the other way 'round.

Android is not stable like Ios And if You buy an Android device you will have update problem because if you buy an android phone like galaxy s when new update release that's just for nexus phones and you should wait till Samsung release suitable firmware for your phone (if they do this)
(and you cant install apps from android market like iTunes its not safe like app store )

This has become a tough decision. I need to head to the store and listen to sales pitches. ;) I am willing to wait for the next version of whichever phone I choose. Thanks all for the input!

But isn't that the perfect example of it NOT fitting your needs? Smartphones are now part of a lot of peoples' every day workflow and free time activities. They should be able to last you one whole day without the need for you to buy backup batteries. There are always exceptions of course, but having to have a backup just because you watched a couple of TV shows is ridiculous. I can respect why people would choose Android over iOS, but what I don't understand is why people put up with unacceptable battery life.

i think this will be the main excuse apple uses to keep the 3.5" screen in the iPhone 5.

its the iPhone part of the MACrumors forum...you're not going to get the best answers here

Overall because of my Mac leanings, I like the opinions expressed in MacRumors Forums. However I understand your point. Although I do believe I have heard reasonable factual based views here, (we look at, evaluate, then make a decision on relative value) any suggestions on where one might find a more "balanced" view?
