I am one of those people that is obsessed with having the latest things and coolest items that i can brag to my friends. I currently have a 2011 mac mini 2.3 ghz with 8 gb of ram and i love it but i like to have the latest things and i don't wanna wait to long to get rid of it before it starts to really lose its value. I wanna be able to game on my computer (BF3 ultra 4x MSAA) and macs fall really short in this area for price/performance. I want to build myself a computer for around 1600 thats really kick @ss. but on the other hand i wanna upgrade my phone, still works but i want the latest thing. I have an Xperia play, and i wanna get an iPhone or the samsung galaxy s3. Which should i get?

You can build yourself a kick ass computer for around $1k or less that will run any game on any setting, so why would you need to spend so much? I spent under that on mine and there is not a single game that lags for me.

Do that and then spend $600 on the next iPhone if you so wish. Sell the Mac Mini to make this an even easier transition.

This describes me to a T.

Hell yeah! One of my biggest peeves is when I see my friends posting their brand new i7's with a $300 motherboard (when we all know a $50 one works the SAME especially since most people don't touch but a few of their PCI slots) along with a $200 tower, 16 gigs of RAM other nonsense and say SO READY FOR DIABLO/SKYRIM/etc .. D: -mini rant- haha.

That's about all I needed to read....and, with that mentality, I'm surprised your friends would stick around.

Exactly what I want to hear. My cousin is always changing and falling out with friends because he brags aboard boasts about these new things. I totally lost it with him (my cousin) when he started telling everybody that he got a new 15" MBP like everyone else's is crap...

Who brags about a Mac mini anyway lol??? You yourself just said you want to build a PC desktop (in which I agree as my desktop setup blows away what I could do with my previous macs/imac for media and integration, home theater, gaming etc). So why would you brag about Apple products you want to replace with a PC lol....? Or brag about Mac's or any off the shelf computer anyway?

Like a person that brags about his direct purchase and apple upgraded options 15" Pro, when I have the same model/cpu but went 3rd part for better Ram and better and larger SSD for a fraction of what Apple charged. Think I should be the one bragging.... lol

But regardless why $1600? As mentioned you can build an insane kickass setup for a grand or even a little less that would more than handle what you'll pry throw at it. Use the difference and get whatever phone... it's all your choice anyway

If you want specs to brag about, it can only be the Galaxy S3.

If the experience is more important, try them both out and see which you prefer.

you guys are so nice to me! jk my friends are the kinda people that also brag/obsess over stuff. so my friends won't leave me. I am only 14. in response when someone asked how old i was. i think that the get a computer for 1k and get a phone with whats left over is a great idea but i have already budgeted a 1600 computer and have a list of parts if i were to get it instead of a phone. you guys aren't really giving a definitive answer, but i don't mind talking to other tech people. with my friends it goes in one ear then out the other. my parents are the same! and i do know how to build a computer, i built one for a relative 4 months ago.

When I was 14 I got my first black and white television and was thrilled about it! I don't believe I bragged to my friends about it though

but your phone and computer are more than year old models  good luck with whatever you decide , looks like your on the right path. like my dad always said "son u wana dig ditches ? Someone has to dig them! Is it gonna be you?" needless to say I'm thankful people like you are around since I don't dig ditches. ;)

I'm in the same nerdy situation. My dell XPS m1530 is about 5 yrs old. Back then I got it with latest technology, but is time for a change. I have a 4S on the other hand.

I'm looking into a Sony Vaio S series with at least 1GB integrated graphics, an i7 intel chip, a screen resolution of at least 1600 by 900px and BD player/burner (preferable a screen resolution of 1980 by 1020 (full HD), that'll run me about $1700 :(

Get both. Don't buy a mac if you want gaming. Their way more expensive for that considering the hardware you get. Go to Newegg.com , and build a rig yourself. For 1000$ you can build a good gaming rig. Then put the 600$ left towards an iphone 5.

I'll bet he doesn't have friends like you. I'm not knocking you, just sayin'.

I'd go with the slightly cheaper computer and the iPhone too. Compromise.

Why do kids have expencive computers and Iphones and hell.

Where are you getting this money kid!

I bet your parents are stinking rich. and give you 1000 bucks each week.

Man, people hate people who brage about the newest thing they just bought I just hate people who do that,
I admit I might do it once in a while, but trust me I never win though.

Honsitly Kid be happy you have that mac mini to do your homework on.

I had to do my home work on a old g3 for a few years. that was annoying.

How can you expect a definitive answer to a question like yours?

But ok, I'll bite. Which would make your friends feel the most like sh**? WHich would make them feel like they are completely inferior to you because you have the bigger di**? Which item would make them feel like they will never live up to your awesomeness? Pick THAT one.

It must be awesome to be your friend.

Even if he brags.. It'd be fun to have friends like him.

So you can play with the newest gadgets without breaking your bank.

All you need is a bit of brown-nosing and manipulation.

"Oh wow awesome. Let me see!"
&
"ehh, it's not as good as I thought. You should get this new...."

When I was 14, I had a 9 transistor Toshiba pocket AM radio.

BTW, still have it and it still works.

Then again, I still have my first color Mac laptop, a 180c, and it still works too.

You haven't told us anything regarding what you need/want from your phone. How do you expect suggestions? Unless you can provide info to help others to help you then read up and decide what suits you best.

I'm in a similar situation. If more than 5 people see my Ferrari then I feel like its too old! So I usually spring for a Maserati or a Bugatti.
If you really wanna impress them, get one of those.
