I've now been passed around to three people at Apple for the last hour, and the last person just cut me off so I'm back to square ****ing one!

This is the worst Apple experience I've had to date.

I take it you have the latest 10.13.6 OS on your macbook?

I do.

Confirmation of the issue. Apparently iOS 12 is not compatible with iTunes 12.8.0.150 so you won't be able to manually backup a device on iOS 12 if you have that version (the current version) of iTunes.

It's not just me affected, it's everyone. So anyone looking to manually back up and restore cannot do it until Monday when iTunes 12.9 is released. They have, however, released iTunes 12.9 for Windows.

So, I'll be doing an iCloud backup and restoring from that to my new phone. When it eventually finishes. Just 1 more hour remaining.

Thank you to everyone who posted and tried to help me out.

That's not true. I updated my X to 12 and then did a complete backup in iTunes. My iTunes is 12.8.0.150 on my iMac.

Dear god, that's the box I was trying to explain earlier. Where were you? I feel like a dumb@ss now.

First time I've ever seen that box.....so when it popped up I clicked on the Learn More button first. That's when I "lost" that box. I was unplugging and replugging the phone, switching spaces, restarting iTunes. Took me 5 minutes before I finally found it behind my Chrome window.

I saw it too and then it hid and felt like a weird hot-fix when I found it, but this is the box the OP needs to find and that will be that and he or she will have their phone backed up.

I had the same issue this morning. There should be a dialog box that pops up. Here's Apple's article on it:
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208831

It was hidden behind my Chrome window.....so make sure you don't have any apps open. Good luck.

I have nothing but iTunes open and don’t see that. I’ve rebooted and tried this several times today and still not seen that.

I’ll just wait until Monday when Mojave comes out and fixes the issue.

How about Bootcamp into Windows, do that backup and then move the backup to the Mac side.

Thanks for that bit of info! I backup up my iPhone a few days ago. Yesterday I updated to iOS 12. I would have tried to backup my iPhone again today when I receive my new one and would have been wondering what was wrong.

I guess that means I cannot set up my XS Max on iTunes either.

Never mind. I read the rest of the thread lol.

I've tried connecting:

iPhone 7+
iPhone XS Max
iPad Pro
iPad Mini

All on iOS12 and none of them connect to iTunes.

I've...
  • Deleted cache and preferences from the system
  • reinstalled macOS
  • reinstalled iTunes
  • Swapped cables and tried every USB-C I have
  • Rebooted all devices several times
  • SMC reset
None of this worked. I then asked the Apple dude on the phone to try plug his phone into his iMac to see if he could sync his and he couldn't. He went away for 10 minutes and said there's an update to fix it, but I don't have it and I would have to wait until Monday.

I don't know why others seem to work, perhaps they've had an update or something, but on High Sierra I cannot see any iOS 12 devices (tried 4) and so cannot do a backup and restore.

I just tried iCloud and apparently it'll take over 3 hours to do 100GB data so sacked that off, too.

I'll just box up the XS Max and get it out Monday and do it then, assuming I can backup my phone then.

Hopefully they can find it....because IMO iCloud restores suck. Hate having to re-enter all my info. The iTunes encrypted backup is just so easy.

Out of interest, what iTunes version are you running now after applying this?

Perhaps that's why others can do the backup, they've done it without realising...

EDIT

Oh FFS. Tried to reinstall iTunes one more time and got this...

Glad its fixed. What a PITA!

You're telling me.

I'm now backing up and will do the transfer to the new phone after. I wish I could copy a link to that update for others because without it you cannot back up to iTunes with iOS 12.

Hey guys,

Sat here waiting for my new XS Max to be delivered, but for all morning I've been trying to back up my iPhone 7+ so I can restore the new phone from this.

However, iTunes just won't recognise that my phone is plugged in and I've tried everything I can think of, yet I still cannot see the button to go into iPhone settings on iTunes to do the backup.

Please help. This is what I've tried.
  • Rebooted 2018 13" MacBook Pro twice
  • Rebooted iPhone 7+ twice
  • Tried all 4 USB-C ports and both USB-A ports on my Kingston dongle
There must be a reason I cannot get to the phone settings on iTunes to do the backup? Is there anything else I can try?

This is where it is meant to show, right? Once it is connected? It's been a while since I've done a backup...
I had that happen 2 days ago... I got on the horn with Apple and they had me reinstall iTunes. Worked like a charm after that.

Where were you five hours ago?

That's what I ended up doing, but after completely ripping everything else apart first. Sledgehammer to put in a nail comes to mind.
Um sleeping? West coaster. I guess we are not the only ones. Some new iTunes update was pushed and apparently no one received it? Even the tech was like "you're far from the first." Meh. As long as it works now.
