I am on an older iPhone, but I don't think that is the issue, it's an iPhone 8 but I have this problem with the Mail app, only when on 4G.
I can get on Safari no issues when out and about and it loads fine, but 'Mail' will not update messages, and comes up with the error message updated ‘2020' when checking for new mail! Was out for 3 hours yesterday and was turning phone on and off, and airplane mode on and off and it makes no difference. Problem being, my email provider blames my mobile carrier, and you've guessed it, my mobile carrier blames the email provider servers, so I am in a position of it never being resolved. This has happened for several months and have resigned myself to not being able to check emails when out. All settings are correct and have worked for years

When phone is on WiFi it’s fine, no issues, so I wondered if this problem has ever happened to anyone else ever?

Yeh, I don't think it's the phone, but carrier or server. Just can't get answers for this one

Do you have cellular data enabled on 4G? Also, is it on a specific mail account or does it affect all accounts?
Yes I do, it's only one account I use on there. Any Gmail or Yahoo works fine on their apps. Only the iOS mail that won't budge at all.

Does your email provider specify which ports to have open? Are you using IMAP or POP?
I've been through it with them and yes, they say all correct settings, I sent them screen shots.
IMAP.

What I mean was, within the Mail app, you can have several inboxes. Does it happen with all of them or just that specific one?
It doesn't work on any of them, It just shows 'checking for mail' for hours on end, until I get back home and am on WiFi, or it says updated at the bottom on a date from 2020. Makes no sense, but only have one account on there, my work one. Personal mail is Gmail/Yahoo app and 4G works fine on apps and Safari.

This one you mean?

Indeed that one. But it is odd, it is enabled.
I've had this problem for a long time and wondered if anyone else has come across it from the last time I asked, which was a fair while back. I'm hesitant to think it's because it's an iPhone 8 and I need a new phone, which I do!

I came to post my own thread but found yours mirrored my problems.

only a recent thing, in fact whilst youve had it for months ive only had it I think for a week.

Iphone XS. inbuilt mail app. 3 email accounts from my provider (had them 15 years) plus my Mail app picks up my iCloud email plus a hotmail email.

All accounts are Also on my old iPad Air 2 plus my iMac. never had problems on any of them.

in the last week, when on 4g its consistent, will not pick up emails apart from iCloud. a send and receive gives an error for the 4 accounts. when I get home and its on wifi it picks up fine, except once just 5 mins ago when I got same errors twice and I thought oh no..... checked iPad and iMac (obv both on wifi) and got emails fine. went back to phone and it was okay.
