I agree the 256 will go first. The people who are super preorder anxious are not the crowd that is going to pause over the slight increase in cost I bet. Those willing to preorder something so new will be all in.

I think it's fairly obvious that whoever is ordering iPhone X, is fairly anxious in general. What it really comes down to, aside from price point, it's someone's storage needs and how they plan on using your iPhone. If you have somebody that takes a lot of 4K videos, photos And has a plethora of applications, naturally the 256 GB would be the better choice. But someone like myself, I can easily survive on 32 GB or Lower, but that's just because that's all I would require for my usage.

I always thought the cheaper versions always sold out first. No idea about the colour.

That is the way it use to be, but with apple trying to get everyone to use their verison of "cloud" storage, it makes sense to get the biggest possible version you can afford. Unlike traditional cloud storage, icloud storage pushes all of your documents, photos, videos, etc. to all of your apple devices. As someone with a mac, ipad, and iphone I could never survive with anything less than 128.

Basically in the past getting a new phone was sort of like starting over, but now year-over-year most people's storage needs are going to continue to grow if you buy into apple storage.

Maybe. I think Apple knows that the 64 will likely sell the most and will prepare for that. Black 64 is probably the phone they will produce the most of.

That’s my guess, so I’ll probably try for 256GB to have a better chance, either preorder or waiting in line at Apple if needed.

I suggest ordering what you want. Don't go for a different model just because you might get it a little sooner.

But yeah, I think the entry level model will sell out fastest. I think that's the norm, especially since the price is already so hefty. But of course, Apple no doubt realizes this as well and is probably producing far more 64GB units to best accommodate the expected demand, so even if 256GB is less popular, that doesn't necessarily mean it will be more available. So as I said, order what you actually want and hope for the best.

I just hope the Apple Store app doesn't crash at 08:01. Also wish there was 3-4 colours not two, makes it harder to get.

Less colors makes it easier to get. There is more stock of the two colors instead of stock spread across multiple colors based on projected demand for X color that might not be the one people go for.

My experience is exactly the opposite. Since I moved to iTunes Match, iCloud Photos, and iCloud in general, my storage needs have dropped. I have a 64 GB iPhone but could probably make it work even with 32 GB. None of my photos, videos, and music need to be on the local device anymore.

The only reason left I see to pay for the 256 GB is:
  1. Refusal to use iCloud
  2. Ridiculous amounts of apps installed, especially large games
  3. Shooting tons of 4k video
#1 is silly IMO, #2 can be largely alleviated by the new "remove unused apps" option in iOS 11. So we're left with those that shoot lots of 4k video.

What I would find humorous would be for those that buy the 64gb model to find out 2-6 months later that they will have to manage the space on their new phone...more aggressively.

There is a lot of music out there that is not on Apple Music you know or those who do not want to use Apple Music.

Everybody’s use is different. None are right or wrong.

Are you offloading your photos on a regular basis? If you are using icloud photos they are with you all of the time, even if you used a condensed version. 4K videos take up a lot of space. I probably have 20, 30 second videos and that is several gigs.

I want the 256GB. If I'm spending 1k on a product might as well future proof it so I can use for a few years.

exactly. Until I started using icloud photos/videos with 4K I was in pretty good shape.

Sure there is and that's what iTunes Match is for. My entire library is the cloud via Match regardless of whether it was purchased from iTunes or not.

There is no manual offloading needed with iCloud Photos. Take a look at Settings > Photos & Camera > Optimize iPhone Storage. "If your iPhone is low on space, full-resolution photos and videos are automatically replaced with optimized versions. Full-resolution versions are stored in iCloud."

My photo library is 80 GB in iCloud but only about 17 GB is on my device currently, and most of those are full-res cached versions. I'm not out of space, so it hasn't needed to trim this cache yet.

That is good to know that is saves that much space when choosing optimize. Also I just noticed there are some really good IOS11 features such as offload unused apps. It will save the data in the cloud, but remove it from your device.

I agree with you on this. Henry Ford proved this with his "Model T" which was in available in any color you wanted as long as that color was Black. This enabled him to really crank them out of the factory.

I realize that people would like more colors, but I have a feeling that the process of manufacturing the glass cases for this phone is quite complicated and therefore two colors will speedup the process.

I hope so since I am getting the 256. I will try to get in right away, if I have to wait its fine my 7 plus is working great.... Also I am open to either color since the front is black so maybe that will help, should one be gone quicker than the other.
