Well here we are 30-ish hours after pre-orders started and shipping time is 5-6 weeks.

I read posts on here claiming that it would be next year before supply met demand. In reality is seems that anyone who currently wants one can have one by early December.

Wonder if this was people being unduly pessimistic, Apple ramping up production or fewer people ordering than anticipated (or some combination)?

It certainly will be next year before supply meets demand. If you order now you will already get estimates for mid December. People won't stop ordering now so this will get pushed back, especially if the reviews are good and they realise that they probably won't get them in time for Christmas.

You definitely won't be able to go to apple.com in late December and have one shipped to you within 2 days.

EDIT: take AirPods for example. It took like 10 months before the quoted shipping time went down from 6 weeks.

It's barely ONE DAY after the first order was taken and supply is 5-6 weeks behind demand. That means order today and get your iPhone in early to mid December. That's pretty close to the end of the year and, again, just one day in to orders. If it stays a 5-6 weeks for the next week or so then, yes, we are into 2018 before those buyers get their iPhone.

The prediction was never that supply for early pre-orders wouldn't be met until next year. It was that the total demand for the X wouldn't be met until next year, i.e., the time when you could walk into a store without a reservation and buy whatever model you wanted, no prob.

Those are my thoughts too. Some are thinking that 5 to 6 weeks really isn't that much of a wait, when it's only been one full day of pre-orders and its not even been a full weekend yet when some will be pre-ordering at their convenience. And then once we extend into next week into November, those pre-orders will still continue to grow and likely further into early January 2018.

On a tech forum, many are aware of when to pre-order and had this all planned out. In the real world, pre-ordering is at somebody's convenience and they will do it when they have the opportunity to do so.

I think supply is just better than we though. I got two. One at 12:01 and then I decided for another at 12:26. Both 11/3 deliveries. You are hearing about lots of people getting pushed up to 11/3 who were showing a couple weeks out. Order now and I bet you’d have it by the end of November max.

For a worldwide launch backed by 6 weeks of media attention, I would suggest the demand is less than predicted.

To put that into perspective, iPhone 6 Plus pre-orders slipped to 3-4 weeks in less than 24 hours. And that did not include China nor production problems.

That's a great analysis, the preorder for the X did start later than usual. I think demand may be what Apple stated in their release, we'll see how it turns out.

I think Apple did a fantastic job of getting everyone excited and up at midnight to order. We all thought the supply was super constrained. I don't think it was (or is). I think there are many many more X's available than anticipated. The is matched by a massive demand. 5-6 week delivery dates are legit and reflect a huge appetite for a phone that has good availability. I think this will be the best selling phone of all time.
