On iPhone X: Does anyone else notice on white/light backgrounds such as in settings or notes, that the edge of the display(in my case especially the top right corner), can look purple/pinkish when looking at it from varying angles? its subtle but noticeable, and its really getting annoying.

FYI, my girlfriends iPhone X does not do this, even with the same brightness and display settings as mine.

is this an OLED characteristic, or something that I could exchange my phone for?

You won''t et an exchange for it, best bet would be return if it bothers you that much.

"If you look at an OLED display off-angle, you might notice slight shifts in color and hue. This is a characteristic of OLED and is normal behavior"

I am aware of that, but the problem only seems to occur on the edge of the display. the rest of it only shifts slightly bluer like has been documented. but the edge becomes purple/pink

and like I said, my girlfriends X does not do this. the colour shift at angles is consistent across the display on her phone

Both of my X’s have had very subtle pink borders around the entire screen. Sometimes they show up more than others depending on True Tone and night shift.

Sounds like you’re describing your screen having an uneven tint. They all do. Go to the Apple Store and check all the display units. They’re not gonna have that pink thing your have in the exact same spot. They all vary and this is within the manufacturing tolerance. There is no such thing as an absolutely even screen, OLED or LCD.

good to know its not just me, I'm just curious if its "supposed" to be like that. still wouldn't explain why it only happens on one of ours

No pic? WTF
I tried to take a pic, but its too subtle to be really obvious in the pic, a video shows it better but I don't think I'm allowed to post videos here yet

ill try to find some time tomorrow, its true I've only compared it to my girlfriends X. again, hers does not do this at all, edge or otherwise.

If it is a spec or feature as Apple said, you have to learn to use it. Difficult at beginning then everything will be easier.

Whole thing looks purple to me. This picture might become famous.

I gotta say that it’s a lemon! I checked many units and so far I saw only one like that: it had a very prominent pink hue at almost any angle. I’d never keep it.

That is the review model used by MobileTechReview. They wouldn’t use a lemon. .. it might be the angle but even so.. that’s not an angle/color that is acceptable IMO.

This is the best I could capture, its most visible when I go to the home screen next to the camera and stocks app.

Keep in mind, the iPhone X I used to film this was auto adjusting on its own to adjust to lighting and colour changes. its far more obvious in person. the other X we have definitely does not do this.

Edit: you can actually see it in the thumbnail, it goes all the way around the notch too

They all exhibit it to some extent in deferent parts of the screen. Seems to be the nature of OLED in general.

if it's that pink - just return it. both my X turn "blue" at a viewing angle outside normal range which is normal for OLED .... i personally couldn't stand pink but if it's not there at normal viewing angle... who cares?

Return it. I noticed the band has also faded to silver from space gray. Another defect. ;)

I would return that unit. I had that on my first one and couldn’t stand it while reading text left to right. My other ones have not exhibited this at least not in such a noticeable area. Check stock around 6-6:30am each day as I have been able to do in store pickup twice to try different ones. Now just trying to decide between two screens luckily each without red edges

Yeah I’m gunna return it. I went to an apple store today and they told me it’s “within normal specs” even though none of the 15 or so display models or any other X I’ve seen do it.

Great. I do care because I paid 1600 CAD after tax for this, it better be perfect.

I paid A$1579 for mine. But what I meant was, it really makes no difference to how the phone performs or works, and apple have even said it's not a fault to you. It's merely a visual thing when holding the screen at an angle. If it was there all the time, it would be different. And the fact that you are not alone, shows it's probably just how it is.

yes it doesn't affect function, but considering most of them don't have this issue at all, and that its visible(at least to me) from most angles, I don't feel unreasonable returning it or asking for a replacement.

if they all did it that would be a different story

I'll be passing an apple store today, so I'll have a look at the display units and show them mine and ask their opinion. I won't be swapping, but interested to know their stance.

Mine is only visible in certain lights/angles so perhaps yours is worse than mine. Let us know how you go.

i dont have the same issue with you mate but my screen gets dimmer and faded in low brightness which is very annoying cause you can not see clearly dark images. When I went to an apple store they told me that every iphone screen is different if you compare it with another. No matter what, the quality of the screen is far more less than the expectations you have after paying 1000pounds for a phone.
