Having played with the iPhone X a bit, I think it's got a lot going for it, and I'm not surprised that it's selling well.

However, a couple of things bother me about it that are making me think twice about getting it myself.

Mainly, it's really big! It's already significantly bigger than an iPhone 6/7, and the screen of course goes right to the edges - which means that any controls that are near the top of the screen are difficult or impossible to reach without resorting to "two handed" operation.

The control panel, so nicely improved in iOS 11, is really difficult to access on the X because of the awkward top-corner position of the gesture. It would be much better/easier if you could access it from one of the bottom corner(s)! Is there really no way to configure this?

On the other hand, the swipe gesture that replaces the home button is so elegant and natural that I immediately found myself missing it on my own phone.

You might try looking in cities instead of the wild. I’ve seen a lot of iPhone Xs around the Washington DC area...
Yep, they’re popping up all over the place here. Even my sister-in-law is aware of the X and wants it. She doesn’t usually pay attention to when new iPhones come out.

I didn’t want one until my husband let me borrow his. I thought the notch would stop me in my tracks but my brain just accepted it. I DO notice it but it’s not the problem I thought it would be.

I've seen quite a few, they've been very popular at the office for a start and if I scan around the MRT on any journey I usually see one. If adoption is around 2% of iPhones at this point, and given than iPhone is what .. 10-20% of the market here, seeing one on any given MRT journey sounds about right.

They certainly were moving out the door last time I was at Apple Orchard, perhaps Santa is storing them up for the BEST CHRISTMAS EVER! (lah)
I guess it's just where I live and work does not have a high adoption rate for the iPhone X. However, it's good to see more people getting now. I do see more and more this week and last week.

Quick review - (May be a little biased as I spent ~1500$ after tax on this)

The good.
- Notch is easily forgettable, as the main content is below.
- The jump of speed from 6 to X is crazy!
- That said, FaceID just works and is better than gen 1 Touch ID.
- Battery life is great for a non plus iPhone.
- I hate to admit it, but so far Animoji are fun.
- Camera improvements over 6 are massive, front and back.
- Water resistance is always a win.

The bad.
- My front speaker crackles on ringtones or music when set anywhere near high volume. I’m worried if I have to take this back in for a replacement?
- iOS 11.2 bug of terms and conditions that keeps popping up even after “agreeing”.

I have one since day one,it’s definitely the best iPhone yet.

The swipe gestures are definitely superior to pressing home button and I got used to them within seconds of use.

Infact now when I pick a normal phone I try to swipe because it’s so natural.

The size is very ergonomical.

The OLED screen is visibly superior to the best LCD screens such as 7 Plus and 8 Plus.it just looks better and blacks are so much richer.

Face ID has been issue free and works as good as touch ID.

The price however is something I’m not happy about now.
it REALLY shouldn’t be this expensive and there is no justification.

These changes are nice but should have been normal new-cycle features with regular pricing.

Except for the PWM dimming on the oled screen of the X which for me unfortunately is an issue

That’s great an all but now can app developers get their apps optimized ... beautiful $1400 phone and majority of the apps I use are letterboxed......

If you are a tech guy then you appreciate scientifically arrived at statistics. The odds of seeing a random person with a X weeks after launch is small because it's maybe 10m phones in the wild vs 740+ million people in Europe or 300+ million people in the U.S. Needle in a haystack in most places right now. How may Porche Macans do you see daily? Probably not too many compared to Jeep Grand Cherokees. Doesn't mean it's not a popular model.

OTOH AW has been out for 2.5 years so it's had a lot more time to get on lots of wrists. Hard to compare that with a phone that has been out for weeks. Even anecdotally.

Yes, that's precisely the point! I forgot to mention I live in a large metropolitan area in the USA and yes, I do indeed see almost as many Porsche Macans, Maserattis and Ferraris as I do see jeeps and Chevys. But even the owners of those fancy cars I know, are not going for the X.

The AW mention, was not a comparison, just an observation... As a tech guy, one thing I do appreciate is the truth! And I would wish they tell the truth or tell you how they come up with these (headline) statements.

I'll bet the regular iPhone 7 is still beating them all in number of units, but there's a reason Apple won't break down sales. They don't want you to know what they've done well or not when it's a product they don't want you to buy. :D

I didn’t notice any issues whatsoever.
Most of these things you read on internet are overblown nit pickings by some OCDs.

The arguments of this being the greatest iPhone ever are moot, as every year they come out with the greatest iphone ever.

Find it odd that this is really the first iPhone that everyone claims is so great, yet it comes with too many compromises for the asking price. The only other time you had to upgrade and deal with a losing something was the 7 with loss of headphone jack.

I haven't jumped on this phone because I don't want to give up stuff when I shouldn't have to sacrifice anything when UPGRADING to their flagship device. Maybe lots of others who haven't upgraded feel precisely the same way, and they don't want to spend about $1400 to compromise.

This phone has not put apple ahead in terms of anything except face ID. Other phones have had what this phone does 3 years ago. iPhone X has somewhat closed the gap of how much apple was trailing other phone manufacturers.

I know lots of iPhone users and none of them have upgraded, although they do have the means to. But that doesn't mean anything. That is just a factual statement in my experience and I do not claim anything as to whether or not the phone is selling well. I'm sure it is doing just fine.

Not sure how the X managed that with the crazy lead times.
I ordered mine on launch day and only received it on Saturday.
Right, I think analysts overestimated the demand or supply issues with iPhone X. iPhone X is either not as selling as well as analysts expected (but still good enough) or much easier to produce.

I’ve had mine since launch day, but have yet to see one in person. And most who see mine say it’s the first one they have seen.

I got mine on the first day (Nov 3rd) in Seattle. Have yet to see one being used, but not looking. Perhaps X owners are worried about having someone snatch it out of there hands when using it in public. I'm a bit cagey myself in public, depending on where I am. The thought of a $1000+ device being grabbed gives one pause...

I believe people when they say it's a great iPhone, but I'll never get past the notch.
I think you’re missing out then. I was concerned about the notch too, but bought it knowing I could return it if I didn’t like it. I can honestly say the notch was never an issue from the time I unboxed it. It is my favorite iPhone by far. Love the gestures and the full screen/size of device and Face ID works really well.

At least it seems developers so far have been faster to update for the X than the change to the plus screen.

I didn’t notice any issues whatsoever.

Very true. All the negativity discussed on a tech forum or wrong with the iPhone is not indicative of everyone else's experience in the real world. I think when someone reads into everything on a tech forum, they start to believe their device has the same issue or they start looking for defects. My advice is, use the iPhone and enjoy it, if someone starts looking for problems, those problems will find you.

Well, Apple developed and shipped the iPhone X for two reasons: Introduce new technologies and testing the price sensivity of its customer base. While the former for sure is welcome, the latter will tell them that customers are even willing to pay even more allthough iPhones are already on the top of that list. So we already know now which direction we're heading.

I'm afraid you're right.
X it is just the first one of a long series of phones above the $1000 price point. I hope they'll continue to sell new models at the usual price point, like iPhone 8 this year.

I don't know where you are living -- maybe Silicon Valley, which is atypical -- but that is not the norm in typical big U.S. metro areas. I'm in metro DC which has some of the highest per capita incomes in the country. The county I live in ranks in the top 5 in the U.S. Neighboring counties are also in the top 15.

I can tell you I do not see Maserattis or Macans on a daily basis. A good number of Bimmer 3s, X3s, even Teslas, sure. But Maserattis are exotic and Macans, Porsche just can't make them fast enough even 4 model years later -- there just are not a lot in the wild, but again that IS NOT an indication that they are not selling. It's a popular model.

So going back to X sales, just because you don't see them is not an indication they are not selling. It's an indication that there are not enough in the wild yet to be common place. It takes time to get 50 million phones out of production and into the wild. But that will be the case for the X in a few months. The X is showing itself to be a big sell and coup for Apple. Even still you see Cellcos offering BOGO Galaxy S, iPhone 8, but hardly any deals at all for the X. No need for them to offer an incentive yet. It's selling itself.

I didn't notice the screen size jump particularly (or maybe I was just expecting it). However, going back and using my wife's 8 now I can't believe how small the screen is on that! Be warned...

I’m with you guys on this (I’m in Australia). The only other X I’ve seen in the wild is owned by my brother!

Hands down best iPhone ever though. It’s a joy to use and I haven’t loved an iPhone this much since the original (and maybe the 4). Apple knocked this one out of the park.

I live in San Francisco which is probably at the other end of the spectrum. A lot of my friends and coworkers have the X.
