The FBI can take detailed pics of the persons face right when they are arrested and immediately send the data to a 3D printer.
If they have all of the processes in place before hand, they can definitely beat the clock before a passcode is required.

Only one problem with that. With touch id.. they had to guess which finger the person set up, and they only had a few tries. Same problem with Face ID. someone could have set it up with their arse instead of their face. :D

No. Because with biometrics, there is nothing to "spy" on. Cameras and peekers never have the chance to see your passcode to begin with!

Hahahahaha. That crazy Apple. For those complaining about people wasting lots of money to make a mask, you don't understand, this is only the beginning, its not going to stop. The masks will get cheaper and easier to make. The phone's security is worthless. Get over it. Go scan your faces into a database and just wait to be catalogued and have the data "breached" by the NSA or homeland security or whatever the f organization posing as some rogue hacker. You all dont deserve personal privacy.

Hey buddy... you got confused again, it’s the red pill in the morning, the yellow pill at night, not the other way around :)

I wouldn't say never (since TouchID and FaceID require passcode input after a certain amount of time), but I agree that it's less frequent than a passcode-only device. That said, I still think there is more possibility to access a biometric-equipped device than one without.

As much as Apple claimed how secure and almost impossible to bypass, I never believed their claims and I think it’s a bs for them to say that. Anyhow I’m not surprised how fast this thing come into fruition but I’m not worried at all. It is what is as long these hackers have access to computer they’ll find a way.

Should be if law enforcement ever needs into it. The FBI would totally manufacture masks based off of your face.

I would assume they don't need to... they could just compel you to look into the phone. they already can compel you to put your finger on the phone.

So over these tests. Any reasonable person realized that this has no real world implication. To get this system down to a point where it work flawlessly, so that the perp would feel confident that they can finish the process and unlock the phone in less than 5 tries over 24 hours max? Give me a break. We’ve all seen what happens in real life in the last few instances when the FBI wanted to unlock a phone, and things didn’t come together like it was a spy movie.

I have absolutely zero concern that someone will go through all this trouble (successfully) to unlock my iPhone so they can have access to my personal info.

Absolutey. Zero.

Smh, here we go again. I wish the only way to get an iphone x would be to pay in full. Also they should raise the price too. And maybe an IQ test.

It would be less trouble cutting the iphone owners head off, than to try making this mask. **** if anyone could make a mask of my face that works. They could have the damn phone.

I have a three year old and twin 11 month old girls. Sadly, I can't remember what 8 hours of sleep is. :(

"May the Force be with you." The upstairs bedrooms hallway in our home still has several areas that "creak" when you walk over them. All from hundreds of hours of walking back and forth.

This is one of the stupidest things I have seen. So its easy to unlock with Face ID and a mask. Oh wait it took us 9-10 hours to create the mask. Let alone how am I going to determine who's face to make the mask of. Really??Its no different then if I create and exact copy of someones finger print (remember that was proven too). I guess the only thing that will make these idiots happy is when the iPhone takes a DNA sample. But I guess there is a way to fake that too. Lets all be honest the security on these phones are good for most people. If you are such a VIP you should be using a passcode and not the convenience of Face ID. Stop trying to knock it!

While it isn't a serious concern, this just goes to show never trust marketing pitches from companies regarding their products. Also, the iPhone X is a beta product and waiting for version 2 or so while they work out the kinks like this isn't a bad option.

I am not clear on the methodology. Did they train the iPhone X using the mask, or did they train it using a real person and then spoof with the mask? If they trained with a mask, I don't really see a problem.

If anything, this seem like it's actually for when your iPhone is lost or stolen. Even with expensive equipment, people who gets hold of the phone wouldn't be able to lift your fingerprint off of the the phone like touchID and these masks requires proximity to the owner for detailed photographs, which is far less likely to be accomplished.

I doubt you could even make an acurate enough 3D mask with just pictures. I do 3D printing and to make and acurate 3D model of something without a 3D scanner is difficult as hell, you need to take like over 100 picture from 100 angles and I doubt you would be able to get enough point to match with that method and i can honestly say I’ve never made an acurate 3D model of anything with this method, no matter how many pictures I take, and in a controlled environment. Even with a 3D scanner you would need complete cooperation and a long time to get a good model.
And yet...

The iPhone X can scan your face and build a 3D digital model for Portrait Lighting effects in a fraction of a second. It can even map expressions for Animoji in real-time.

I'm playing devil's advocate here, just passing time while I wait for my 256 GB iPhone X shipping status to change from "Your package is in transit" to something that actually means something to me (and maybe a delivery date).

What if all you need to make an accurate 3D model in 2018 is a handheld device with an OLED screen and a notch containing a high resolution camera and a unit that floods your face with tens of thousands of infrared dots that are not visible to human eyes? Don't say it's impossible, because we know that's not true.

iPhone X owner...literally do not care lol. If somebody spends $300+ dollars on doll making materials, $1,500 on a camera and telephoto lens, and then countless hours figuring out the exact specs needed to spoof my phone without even having my phone to run tests against...then kudos to them and if they can unlock it, they deserve it lololol.

As usual. They are missing the point. Let’s see them unlock a phone in 5 attempts given a phone and some photos of the person.

I’m going to gamble these guys had over 100 failed unlocks before this worked
And that was with a willing subject and the iPhone X in hand. Now imagine not having any of these things.

I'm just waiting for someone to claim that those tens of thousands of infrared dots has caused them to go blind or develop pimples or something. Class action!

people love to complain about nothing all of this was based over when the finger print thing came out - give me a break!
All anyone needs to do is look over shoulder when your typing in a passcode or use a camera in slow motion etc there are a million ways to crack a passcode high tech or low tech...
A lock only keeps an honest person out - if you really have that much to hide DO NOT use ANY smart phone
