Did those that are having this problem choose an encrypted backup? I did. I'm trying a new backup without encryption to see if it helps.

iPhone X Issue with Messages

Icloud doesn’t do encrypted/unencrypted.
But I’m now doing so unencrypted on iTunes.

Manually reset the logins of every blasted app that doesn’t use Google’s login or something like that.
And manually put them back into the same order I had.
FFing brilliant that is!

Do you still have your old iPhone?
Try backing it up in iTunes (encrypted backup) and restore the backup onto the X. Maybe your iCloud backup is corrupted.
Another thing you can do is delete your iCloud Backup and create a new one (with your old phone). Then try an iCloud restore on the X. This is more risky though as you will have no backup for a short time.
In any case, make sure you have an extra backup of irreplaceable data such as photos. Good luck.

I'm backing up from my X right now on iTunes which might be a mistake. If it doesn't work I'll backup from my 7.

It won't work because your X already has the corruption.
Save time and abort that backup, and back up your 7. Then restore that backup onto your X.
Well that didn't work. Creating a new backup from my iPhone 7 and restoring from that. I'll report back.

Made a backup from my 6S into iTunes, unencrypted, put it back to iMessage and that didn’t work either.

Thats not what I wanted to do. So I’ll go without iMessage for a couple of days before I have enough time to redo my whole phone.
And I’m not going to put my iPhone X down. I really like it a lot.
