The Silicone cases do have more grip but one of my biggest reasons to go with Leather is the metal buttons. Whether its a garbage china-made $3 TPU case or a garbage China-made $40 Apple TPU case, having to press a button through a piece of rubber is annoying. Especially on the X which requires you to press that damn side button every time you want to turn on the phone.

I get leather every time and complain how slippery it feels. But metal buttons are important to me so I may have to stick a PopSocket on it. (I can't wait for the glares from people who see a $1300 phone in a $50 leather case with an ugly $3 toy glued on the back of it) :D

Agree, non-buttons annoy me on those other cases. Apple used to just cover the buttons with leather but switched it up for the 7. Being easily clickable is especially important now that we double click to use Apple Pay and use a hold-down for Siri.

The leather cases felt slippery when I checked them out at the Apple Store. This was the only reason I bought the silicone case instead. Because my hands are naturally very sweaty, I couldn’t get a positive grip on the leather.

It reminded me of back when I played tennis with a racquet that had a natural leather grip. My hands sweated even more when playing and the wet leather got too slippery. I ended up having to use an absorbent layer over the leather grip so my racquet wouldn’t fly out of my hand.

Returned mine this year because of this very fact. I've had leather cases since the iPhone 6.

I just got the X in Germany and would love that saddle leather brown case. However it's far too slick. I got the black silicone instead. The black is great (with the black phone) as you don't even notice it..

Went back to store today, sat down and tried the brown leather on my phone again.. It's not the money, it's just my fear that the damn thing will slip out of my hands (and there's no apple store in my home country)..

I might get the brown regardless and use it just at home for a few weeks and see if the slickness reduces with wear..

Wish Apple had done something different, to have the leather have more tooth / grip.. Beautiful but useless. I have the Macbook leather case and isn't slippery at all.

So, I've been through a few colors of the leather case. Including two cosmos blues. Between the original and current cosmos blue (also a taupe) something has definitely changed with the leather - it was grippy out of the box with the newer case, where the original cosmos and an early midnight blue were super slippy when new.

The leather also looks slightly different too - smoother with a definite change in feel.

Not sure whether it is a change in the leather itself (different supplier/batches) or whether something around the dye has changed, but there is a definite difference.

I believe you will find it does. When I first purchased mine and put it on my phone, I was certain that I was going to return it. It felt far to slick and I didn’t care for it at all. I was sure it would eventually end up in me dropping the phone at some point. BUT, I decided that I would live with it a couple of weeks during the return period as see if it grew on me. It did.

I have now had it for a couple of weeks and it has worn in to where I have come to like it. It has a nice hand feel and the initial slickness has gone. I feel much more confident that I will not drop the phone as a result and have no intention of returning it.

I am not sure if the slickness is a result of the tanning or manufacturer process or if they coat them with a wax for retail appeal or to help preserve the leather, but that ultra-slick feel doesn’t appear to be permanent.

I have both and can say that the Silicone case is not at all slippery like the leather one. The only positive attribute of the leather case is that it looks really nice. But Silicone is more shock absorbent material than leather, so I think based on a functional basis - Silicone, aesthetics with minimally acceptable functional basis - Leather.

After years with silicon cases I went leather with my new iPhone X. I love the leather case. It's certainly more slippery than the silicon, but it is really not so bad. Seen much worse (i.e. plastic hard cases). And NO, my hands are not greasy. :D

I had the leather on my 6 and it was great--now leather on my X not so much, after purchase on day one still too slippery !

I just bought a brand new leather case at Apple for my replacement 6S Plus and I guess they didn't retroactively add metal buttons to the cases for the older models. Still has the indentations instead. I think I personally prefer that.

Had to comment on this being I just did a google search about this, lol. I have had my leather case since November when I got the phone. It has not gotten ANY LESS slippery. There is seriously something off about this new leather product they are producing. I have had leather cases in the past, nothing like this. I feel like I am going to have to resort to a silicone. #FeelsBadMan

2 i have had in the last month were not Slippery, maybe they have changed something or could be just luck of the draw as one i had was bought in November but not used.

I’ve bought the silicone black case and love it

Far better grip

Gave the leather one to my mum

I have three leather cases for iPhone X - Saddle Brown, Charcoal Gray and Taupe.

Among those three colors, Saddle Brown is terribly slippery. However, the other two are not.
Charcoal Gray and Taupe stick to my hand and never slip. Sometimes I feel as if the surface of Charcoal Gray and Taupe is adhesive.

I think that the leather cases are not all the same. It seems that the kind of leather differs by color. Maybe two or more kinds of leathers are used for Apple leather cases.

I have second iPhone, and I've been using Saddle Brown leather case for it. Now it isn't that slippery

But, Taupe and Charcoal Gray give good grip 'from the beginning'. Maybe we are able to classify leather cases into two groups - (1) the leather cases those give good grip from the beginning & (2) the leather cases those are slippery at the beginning.

(1) Taupe, Charcoal Gray, Midnight Blue, ......
(2) Saddle Brown, ......

My midnight blue was slippery for about a week so in this case, falls into (2).

Surely they make them all the same and it’s determined by the individual?

Some people have naturally clammy hands and therefore it’ll make it feel more grippy.

Likewise for people who have dry hands and find them slippery.

That’s my take on it.
