Despite having the setting switched off the location icon still appears near the time.

What settings have you got switched off?! There are loads of settings related to location services.

Check your app settings. More than likely, you have an app that is set to use location when being used.

For location services to be truly off, you need to turn it off directly from the settings app.

No there is a setting to show or hide the location services icon.
