Sorry to thread necro but... I, too, experience occasional crazy delays when waking the phone using the side sleep button. I don't use tap-to-wake or raise-to-wake and have always used the sleep and/or home button (where applicable) to wake the device. Occasionally on the X, when pressing the button to wake the device, the button press would seem to go completely unrecognized. In a fit of impatience I'd wind up pressing it again, only for it to be registered as a double-press and activating Apple Pay. It's like that first button press was queued up but not recognized yet. Indeed if I wait a good 10-15 seconds after that first press, the screen would wake up.

I just found this thread today while doing some homework on the issue. I never realized that putting the phone to sleep this way was also slightly delayed. Double-pressing the side button has since been disabled (going on about 10 minutes now haha) and it definitely removes the slight delay putting the phone to sleep. We'll see if it affects waking the phone too. I assume it will, for the better.

I have been through this thread to no avail. Specifically, I have:

  • Tried disabling Apple Pay.
  • Tried disabling the 'double-click lock button' feature that allows Apple Pay to appear on the iPhone's lock screen after the lock button is double clicked when the iPhone is locked.
  • Tried disabling Magnifier in Settings > General > Accessibility > Magnifier. In fact, Magnifier was never enabled on my iPhone.
  • Tried disabling Guided Access in Settings > General > Accessibility > Guided Access. Similar to Magnifier, Guided Access was never enabled on my iPhone.
  • Tried disabling Accessibility Shortcut in Settings > General > Accessibility > Accessibility Shortcut. I have left this disabled.
  • I switched off haptic feedback as part of my set up procedure because I do not need it.

Can anyone suggest any other possible methods of getting rid of the delay when using the lock button?
just making sure, did you try all of them at once? Bc only turning 1 off didn’t work but turning all off worked :)

Same issue for me, the only solution is report it to Apple in the feedback app and wait the solution

Mine has an intermittent issue with waking, press the button and nothing happens press it again and apple pay comes up. I've still not ruled out a hardware issue.

Is anyone else experiencing a slight delay in the screen shutting off after pressing the lock button? I noticed it on launch day when i was setting up the phone but dismissed the issue. Thought maybe it was normal, but then saw a youtube video and saw the screen was turning off immediately after the lock button was hit.

I also compared side by side to my wifes 7 and her phone shuts off immediately and mine takes close to a full second for the screen to turn off. Going to go to the Apple Store after work and compare to the display units.

this is normal if you have Apple pay or any other reward cards attached to the wallet

New iPhone refurbished, iOS 12 installed and same issue with Apple Pay and power button :-s

Same here. No change
Any ideas?
Yeah...just disable GUIDED ACCESS and it is fixed

Just Disable GUIDED ACCESS from the setting and it works flawlessly

it’s due to your apple pay double click setting. turn it off and your power will go go back to normal
