You’d be hard pressed to argue that the original iPhone was an “invention,” much less its 9th/10th iteration.

TIME Magazine has always loved Apple. Those editors are no different than ones on Gizmodo and BGR writing columns on their MacBook or iPhone. It's like asking what's iJustine's favorite gadget?

Yeah, but the list also makes the fidget spinner, so I suppose the year was full of less than stellar inventions...

Glad iPhone X could hang in there with the fidget spinner. Seriously though, it's hard to take credibility in the list when the fidget spinner is on there, and arguably the Tesla model 3, which can barely make it to consumers.
The fidget spinner isn't a 2017 invention, anyway. It started in mid/late 2015; I received my Torqbar (the original fidget spinner) in January of 2016 (it was made in 2015). In 2017 we simply saw millions of crap clones shipped to basically everyone on the planet. Tesla is shipping, what, dozens? hundreds? of Model 3's this year? Apple made a terrific high-quality innovative product and is shipping millions of them this year.

Its only a path that leads to failure if your the only one on that path :)

All companies follow Apple design sooner or later...

accept the design of the X is a ripoff off all the other Android phones that have been on the marke for 4 yrs.

I'm a fan of apple but c'mon give me a break. One of the best inventions? What about all other phones that look a lot like the iPhone X?
Where did you get the idea that how the iPhone X looks is the invention here? They're not talking about fashion, but rather things like the IR depth-mapping face scanner technology. That is an invention.

Face scanner on a phone is not an invention, at least not new. Plenty of smartphones had it even before X came out.

It encapsulates some of the biggest trends of the year with ARkit, Face ID, Truetone on a phone and AI Cores on the SOC. It seems well deserved to me.

So a new phone in the market is a new invention ? Tell me how did the change the way we make telephone calls actually ? I thought the inclusion of the word Phone after "i", meant it was a device was making phone calls. But i guess judging by the fact that they marked fidget spinner (a child's version of a ball bearing mechanism) as an invention too, i can't hold them in much high standards as far as recognizing what a top invention is.

No, it doesn't. I never see anyone comparing the iPhone to android and saying "Wow, I can't believe Apple ripped off an android phone. " Thats a ridiculous assertion. In general, A lot of smart phones have similar features as other competitors. But the Notch is what separates the iPhone away from other android devices.

Sure, but Face ID may be a solution in search of a problem. All other phones have finger print sensors that are just as good (if not better) at authentication.

Really? To each their own, but IMHO FaceID is better than TouchID in nearly every way. I barely even notice authentication anymore. I for one, glad that I won't be going back.

That's just it... they look like the X but they don't have the cutting edge tech of the X. They don't have True Depth Face ID, as Apple designed it, not merely face recognition. There is a difference there. They don't have the diamond pixel structure OLED screen that Apple designed. Yes, Samsung manufactured it... to Apple specs. It doesn't have the best cell phone camera as judged by DxO.

So your comment is like saying "why is the Louve so special?" "What about all the framed lithographs hanging in the mall art store?

My favorite TIME article about Apple was back in January 12, 2007. It was written by Lev Grossman and it was called "Apple In Your Ear." I like how he described the iPhone as an aluminum chocolate bar.

I saved that article in my Pocket app but deleted it when my full-on rage with Apple (or at least with iOS) was on an all-time high earlier this year. They no longer show that article in full and you would need to sub for TIME.

Expecting another Apple fluff piece from TIME is as predictable as Sean Bean's character dying in a movie or TV show or catching an STD from Derek Jeter.

I would be more impressed if Android Authority named iPhone X the best smartphone of the year. That's like asking a Celtics or Yankees fan who is their favorite Laker or Red Sox player ever?

TIME, Newsweek, The Wall Street Journal, The Verge, Gizmodo, and BGR are all in love with Apple. Most of those writers are using Apple products to write those articles.
