So an iteration of the iPhone makes it to the best inventions of 2017? Time Magazine is really hurting this year.

Face scanner on a phone is not an invention, at least not new. Plenty of smartphones had it even before X came out.
Again, "Face scanner" is not the invention in question. Please cite "plenty of smartphones" that use depth mapping of the face to do face scanning.

accept the design of the X is a ripoff off all the other Android phones that have been on the marke for 4 yrs.
Sure, just as soon as you accept that the design of all the other Android phones is a ripoff of the iPhone that has been on the market for 10 years.

Is it really an invention? No. It's just another iteration. The way they implemented FaceID is an invention, but not the phone overall.

Apple's new flagship iPhone X is one of the best inventions of 2017, according to a new list of the top 25 inventions of the year published this morning by TIME magazine.

The smartphone, which launched on November 3, features some of the most radical design changes Apple has introduced in an iPhone since the first iteration of the device launched in 2007. It does away with the Home button, includes an entirely new user interface that embraces new gestures, brings impressive new camera technology, and introduces next-generation biometric authentication in the form of Face ID.

Apple Design Chief Jony Ive says Apple was "looking to the future" with the decision to remove the Home button, and that holding onto features, even those that have been effective, "is a path that leads to failure." As for cost, Ive says packing those features and impressive processing power into the iPhone X has "financial consequence."

Dan Riccio, Apple's senior vice president of hardware engineering, says the iPhone X is "something we really wanted to do since day one."

Based on estimates for demand, the iPhone X is a hit with consumers. It's received largely positive reviews, and despite some bugs and hiccups with a small number of issues, its launch has been a success.

The iPhone X is just one of 25 products that were named the best inventions of the year. Other items that were highlighted by TIME include the Jibo robot, Halo Top low calorie ice cream, the heated Ember mug that keeps coffee warm, a multi-directional elevator, 3D printed Adidas shoes, the Tesla Model 3, the DJI Spark, the Nintendo Switch, and fidget spinners.

iPhone X is indeed the best invention in iPhone history. Kudos to Apple.

Lol good one Time, the best after the best before the best iPhone, sure.

I'm a fan of apple but c'mon give me a break. One of the best inventions? What about all other phones that look a lot like the iPhone X? Man, it's gotta be nice to have enough money to change the narrative/influence of a product.

Ditto. https://www.cnet.com/news/7-ways-the-iphone-x-copies-android-phones/ Just because it ditched a 4 or 5 year old design & finally entered the world of OLED?

Is this like People's Sexiest Man Of The Year where celebrities sic their PR person on a best lobbyist campaign to nab the tin ring?

There are aspects of the iPhone X that no other phones have right now, but I guarantee you will have soon. Folding the screen under the display, for one.

Otherwise, what does looking like the iPhone have to do with it? And how do you think money was involved here? Popularity, sales, sure...but are you insinuating Apple paid them?

If by folding the screen under the display you mean the "notch", then I'm going to have to say that's an invention we could have done without. In fact, there was a phone before the iPhone X that did the notch but slightly smaller. See: Essential Phone PH1.

I'm not necessarily saying Apple paid them, but Apple has a huge amount of influence in the tech world. I'm also saying the Journalism world has the ability to operate in corrupt and mysterious ways.

Where did you get the idea that how the iPhone X looks is the invention here? They're not talking about fashion, but rather things like the IR depth-mapping face scanner technology. That is an invention.

Agreed on the IR depth-mapping face scanning technology.

IPhone X is more evolutionary than revolutionary. I think the original IPhone and the 3G etc could be termed more revolutionary. Nicer screen, faster, FaceID, better camera over IPhone 7 - but its not like we are talking 2X battery life that really changes the game.

Man, imagine a phone that's powered by light, kind of like those EcoDrive Citizen watches. I realize watches are a really small sample size but THAT would be revolutionary. Could be used as a way to increase battery life a little bit more not necessarily as a way to run the entire phone.

Fidget spinners?? Pro Hijab?!?? ...

TIME jumped the shark, failed, got eaten alive by the shark, has been POOPED out of the shark, and was re-eaten by a bunch of fish and Canadian geese.

Was this written by a teenager that wandered through a Sharper Image store? The ROLI keyboard should have been up there before a "pro hijab" or half of the other bland novelties.

The iPhone X definitely should be there, but most of the others are not that innovative.

Sure, okay Apple's iPhone X is one the 'best' inventions of 2017, given Samsung's facial recognition sucked and that was in 2012.

Again, "Face scanner" is not the invention in question. Please cite "plenty of smartphones" that use depth mapping of the face to do face scanning.

Ok, let's not throw around the "depth mapping of the face" PR BS. If you believe all that crap, I have a bridge to sell you.

It's a face scanner, same as LG, Samsung, Microsoft and numerous others. They all unlock by scanning your face at the same rate of speed. I've been unlocking my Surface Book with my face just as quickly for 2 years now.
