Classic film moments featuring the notch. I'm sure there must be a way around this.

iPhoneNotch.jpg

Yeah, except that, as shown, those films are cropped by zooming in to take advantage of the extra real estate on the screen. If shown in their proper aspect ratio (1.85:1 or 1.78:1) they would be pillarboxed (black bars on the sides) and the notch wouldn't be noticed. Not sure how 2.35:1 and wider films will be handled, though; if shown full width (with black bars on the top and bottom), the notch would certainly be there (and it wouldn't be a good thing).

I appreciate you stating that my opinion is "wrong". Hah

Oh, nobody's pretending it's awesome. What I'm saying is... the camera bump and the iPhone X notch won't stop anyone from buying their precious new iPhone. Let's not pretend that it will.
You didn't state an opinion. You stated that "now nobody even thinks about [the bump]." You are wrong. It is still thought about. It is still thought about because it is such a terrible design that it is impossible to ever stop thinking about.

You're also wrong again stating that "it won't stop anyone from buying." It's stopped me. I bought the iPad Pro despite my reservations about the camera bump, and it is such a horrible feature to live with that I'm still keeping my iPhone SE specifically and solely for that reason at this point. Otherwise I might have finally caved on the size issue and preordered an iPhone 8 (mostly because my SE is 16GB and i need more space, more than I need my phone to stay small, and I don't want to buy another SE just to get more gigs).

The time looks off-center. I want to move it to the left by a mm or so.

Lolz. That 1mm adjustment.

Looks Ok to me. I think when it has double digits in the hours it will probably appear more centred.

Ignore, someone already made this comment.

I don't notice this at all.... either.

You have semi thick bezels on the left and right sides of ya phones and the added notch..and the top and bottom...that's how those numbers came up.

So if the screen starts to wrap to the back, we are gonna count those too?

I'd say only flat really viewable/usable surface counts. The 'edge' is not usable. And no useful app find any useful utility with it. It's less usable than the notch.

I don't really care about the dual camera but why don't you want OLED? It's a massive improvement. iPhone 8 with a 1080P OLED display would've been perfect.
Despite Phil's insistence, I'm still skeptical about burn-in. I've had it happen on other phones in the past. I also don't want to have to start thinking about what type of wallpapers, screens, etc. I use again, because they might draw more power.

I think the IPS LCD that Apple has been using for years looks great, isn't susceptible to burn-in like OLED, and because it's backlit the power draw is uniform regardless of what's on screen. I just think the resolution could be better, especially on the non-Plus devices.

To burn an OLED screen you would have to turn the brightness up and leave the screen CONSTANTLY ON for over 12 hours (to several days) showing the same static image (preferably an image with lots of contrast). So, basically, you would have to be pretty stupid to do it.

If you see a burned OLED screen that probably means it's an ex display model that was left plugged in for a few days.

Letterboxed is the default setting for videos, but you can choose full screen if you wish.

I think there is scope to shrink all that hardware (including the earpiece speaker) into the thin bezel in future designs, thus allowing a perfect screen. I suspect Apple is working hard to do just this for future iPhones.

I'll wait for that one.

Looks like you lose about an inch diagonally so effectively shrinking the 5.8" down to 4.8". Notch is more trouble than it's worth.

More trouble than it's worth. lolz

Not sure if srs.

In b4 the notch.

When this happens, I'll truly be done with Apple.

That's actually a really good solution! the Camera is bit too thick/tall... but if it was the menu bar height why not! On a Mac that Space is just filled with blank top bar...

Your sarcasm may actually be onto something awesome. Open lid unlocks before you even know about it.

And full screen video just has a black bar at the top... OLED means you wouldn't notice it anyway.

The bottom notchless render but with the software bezels would be perfect. That way it is not wasting the space, it is using it for the system UI elements, allowing more focus on the app.

I hope there will be a jailbreak for iOS 11 so developer can do exactly what Apple forbids - adding a mask at top and bottom. And remove that terribly annoying swipe line!

Hard to say from those two images since the camera in the movie moved between the two shots as well.

Ugh. You might be right.

Although you say you won't notice it - surely Apple would do the same as with the iPhone and 'embrace it'.

LOL the burn-in myth starts again...
In regular use it's just impossable...

OLED will always draw less power than IPS unless your wallpaper is just a white plain wallpaper.
OLED is a BIG improvement

I have never seen a post from you where you weren't biased towards the Android platform. I am not even sure why you come to these forums. I never understood why Android people do it, but I guess they have nothing better to do. Anyway, I have been pretty fair when it comes to both sides of the equation. I like the notch and think its a unique design. I think there will be software issues when using the phone in landscape, but I never use it that way so I don't see it as much of an issue (for me). If you don't like the notch, that's cool too. I was giving my opinion, but I don't think people will mind as much once you start using it.

Nope I have posts when I was a former iOS user praising iOS. You have never shown anything but fan boyism to Apple products. You cannot unlike a Apple product even if you didn't like it. Everything you say is yes Apple Yes. Apple could give you a broken screen and "you would say thanks Apple you are the greatest and I love your display."

What's the aspect ratio of photos taken by the X? How will they look like in landscape?

Also how will games with interactive elements on the left (again in landscape) work?

I really wanted to like the X, and I can deal with the X in portrait, but looking at it in landscape drives me nuts. I have an 8 plus in gold on order for delivery on the 22nd, will wait and see how developers deal with the X in landscape apps and games before figuring out if I want to move to X or not.

That notch looks like those ugly screen protectors that leave out big parts of the screen.
And the landscape mode suffers from not using the notch part..
But i guess they had to do this for some reason.
