I love everything about my iPhone X except for when I get a call. The ring volume stays the same until I pick up the phone, then it lowers the ringer volume almost all the way.

How do I stop this? I have looked and looked and I don't see anything in the settings that can change this.

I hate this, too! I like to listen to the song, not answer the calls. haha

It’s part of the ‘attention aware features’ of Face ID. It can be disabled in settings.

Personally, I prefer it on. Once I’m aware of an alert, such as a phone call, I immediately want it to quiet down.
Omg, thank you!! I couldn’t figure out how to make that stop-

I don't use public transport often, but I guess this feature would be a god-send for those in a crowded bus/train who detest others' choice in ringtones. :D

(Although, most would be in their own, ear-plugged worlds anyway)...

Why the hell does Apple keep doing stuff like this. Is my life going to be that much better because my ringtone gets quieter the closer it gets to my face. It's a damn phone, not Hal 9000. The more complicated they make it, the easier it is to break down.

How can the ringtone get softer when you are looking at and answering your phone be a problem.

I guess we are all different!

It seems this Attention Aware Feature is related to the Alarm Clock as well. Initially. my alarm got quieter. I prefer the alarm stay consistently loud. My phone is usually beside me as I sleep so I can check the time whenever I wake. I don't want it to go quiet if I need to get up at a certain time should my hand or arm hover over it.

It’s getting more complicated because customers want their devices do more with less control. Nerds like us who love to fine tune how everything works are minority. Heck, if customers can mind control iPhone and let it do everything they want without ever touching it they will buy it.

Less control? There is literally a setting allowing us to control it.

Adding features? Because they make the experience better, at least for some users. You may not like this one, but I bet there are some that you DO like. And maybe others don't. The beauty is you can turn off the setting if you don't prefer it.

Otherwise, everyone would still be using the first iPhone...

Also, this is just code, not hardware. Unlikely it reduces the reliability of the phone appreciably.

Yes. There is a control. But the trend is these controls are going away as time goes on. Look at how disastrous windows update has moved downwards to, much worse than windows 8 era, because Microsoft does not want people to use old windows OS. Same for Apple, where they never give user the option to downgrade iOS. Google is walling Google Android to prevent rooting for more people in an attempt to match Apple walled garden ecosystem. The key is the trend.

Ok.

But in this particular case, Apple added a feature, and allow the user to toggle the feature on or off. They added the control.
