Yay, finally decided it was time to upgrade my 5. Got the new X today and immediately noticed it had a pretty nice scratch on the screen. Everywhere is sold out for 6+ weeks. Sigh, I have the worst luck sometimes.

You are not alone on this. a .5 mm hairline scratch near the bottom between the screen and bezel. It's the silver model. I still want my color of choice which is Space Gray but they didn't have stock so I'll be using this for 14 days and then return it if the space gray doesn't come. I do have the Space Gray model on pre-order on apple.com for Dec. 1-8 delivery.

If I do decide to keep this one, I'll wait till when apple has the screen replacements available. Only then will I attempt to have them replace the screen. Everything else is perfect.

I got mine from Best Buy, it arrived in the mail today. I called and told them what happened and they said refund was the only option because they are super behind on their shipment dates. I went ahead and ordered another one directly from Apple. Oh well.

Call Apple or make Genius appointment. It doesn’t matter that you bought it from Best Buy, it’s a hardware defect so Apple should replace it under warranty.

The soonest they can get me in at Apple is 2 weeks from now... which is cutting it really close to the return date. I'm not going to risk it, just going to return this to Best Buy tomorrow and wait for my new one to arrive I guess. Thanks all for your help.

Apple has replacement units just for this kind of thing. Don't let someone give you a bogus excuse. Walk into your nearest Apple store and get it replaced.

To be honest that would bother me also. Make a genius appointment right now or call them. They might jurt let you keep that one till they get you a new one
I would report it to an Apple Store ASAP so that they can order you a replacement. Stores do get some replacement inventory so it could be much sooner than 5-6 weeks.

I opened mine in the car outside of the Apple store and it was perfect. I am so happy as I never thought I would be able to use the X keyboard after being on plus size iPhones. It is perfect.

What color did you wind up with? I returned a Silver X today and got to check out the SG in person. I like the color scheme on the Silver however worry about durability of the polished band in the long term (one in store was scratched bad but assume some tried on purpose). The SG on the other hand didn't really stand out but did look good.

Sorry this happened to you. Unacceptable. I had the same thing - with MANY scratches. My return is already packed and ready to go. Not bothering with an exchange - I neither have the patience or desire for that at the moment. And I am seriously considering the 7 Plus or 8 Plus instead anyway. I have horrible luck with Apple products - especially screens.

I went to an Apple store yesterday with an issue (no appointment) and they replaced my phone and gave me a brand new one on the spot. They might have em in stock lol

My X had a smudge UNDER the screen and Apple swapped it out for me with one of their two replacement units they had. It was in a refurb/repair box but obviously brand new. I would take it into the Apple store, they may not be able to swap you for a in-the-box phone but they may have repair units for swap available.

That's strange. They gave me a brand new one with the plastic on and all still; not a refurb.

Same here on one of the ones in my household. Crazy that it’s more common than I thought..

We returned it and luckily the Apple Store at 5th ave had some today for store pick up so we picked up another one which is flawless.

OP, where do you live? A lot of Apple Stores have immediate stock for walk ins.

Technically it wasn’t a refurb since they are all new. Apple stores have replacement units in stock for swaps. They didn’t have any brand new in box in stock. It was a 256 GB black which is the hardest to get. They were sent to replacement units by Apple. They were new, I did this on launch day.

Mine is perfect out of the box, that scratch scares me, maybe I opt for a screen protector.

The glass scratches at Mohs level 4, and Apples custom sapphire at a 6, which means that granite countertop your phone is sitting on will scratch both. Keys, coins, zippers, knives and most other everyday things will be fine

I never believed stories like this of Apple products coming with scratches, until it happened to me. Touch Bar MacBook Pro with a scratch deep enough to see through the protective wrapping.

The fact that stuff like this makes it past quality control is seriously concerning.
