Got an early morning pickup scheduled for November 3rd for a Space Grey 256GB iPhone X. Ordered around 3:06am EDT.

Glad I chose in store pickup. I just hope they guarantee these for pickup customers. Wonder how they will work the lines on launch day.
The point of the pre-order is that they are guaranteed. How the lines worked (back when I was able to get launch day pre-orders) at least where I live is there is one single line outside the mall the night before, then a few hours before opening the Apple employees start moving the line inside. Then shortly before opening those with pre-orders are asked to start a line on one side of the storefront, and walk-ins in another.

Honestly if US carriers have so much stock still available why not send that back to apple to fulfill orders? Doesn't make any sense (from Apple's perspective). I would think that they would want to get the phone in people's hands as soon as possible to as many people as possible as fast as possible.

Holla, I am in the NoVa area and saw Verizon iPhone X available for 11/3 pickup as late as 3:39am (EST). No one in my family has Verizon wireless anymore, so I couldn't reserve a pickup as Apple Store required Verizon wireless account verification. I suspect that these store pickup iPhones will also be tied to the Verizon phone line account and be verification locked (activation prompt for wireless #, billing zip code, and last four digits of your social before they can be unlocked).

So if my check in window is between 8:30-9:00am, should I still show up early? Or is being there a little before 8:30 acceptable?

Thanks for your help and your opinion, btw.

I think it depends largely on the configuration and the location. I'm sure this was not the case for most Apple Stores.

I seem to recall similar for 6 pre-order. In that case, available inventory was all over the map. Only trend then was 128 and 16 configurations and gold being the in demand specs, but again, phone for cellco X availble, same phone for Y not.

I’m not talking about shipping. In store pickup was (and still is) available launch day.
Not for for everyone. not everywhere.
was not available for my Ft Worth Texas store from the beginning.
not sure how many generalities can be drawn

from reading the posts, this SEEMED a REALLY inconsistant or independent experience launch: even inconsistant was inconsistant ha! e.g., Apple store app not working on iphones, various long access delays different parts of country, lots units one place, maybe not others... personally never had so much trouble accessing apple store app on iphone.

Most NYC stores had them for pickup for a while. Now it looks like just 5th ave has the 64 Black.

EDIT: Sold out now.

What are you talking about? EVERY year there is a wave of rumors of thin stock. And then EVERY year Apple announces record sales at launch. So, EVERY year Apple under promises and over delivers.

I get that you are saying that having some in stores this year is special, but that's true every year too. There's always some in stores on launch day (except special colors, which might wait a bit longer).
There were no Pluses last year.

There were a few available for launch day pickup in Austin until earlier this morning. I ordered one through Verizon because Apple crashed and got launch day delivery of a Silver 256GB, but I will be out of town. Since I was buying two anyways, I also have a 64GB Space Grey reserved for pickup so that I still get the launch day feels.

I am only using a little over 25 GB of space myself and keep everything in the cloud / storage optimized - why pay the extra money for the storage when I have unlimited data these days?
