It makes more sense to me to use automatic night mode with the settings I like and leave TT off completely.

Same, like cool blue better. And the off axis blue shift isnt as noticeable. I left it on for a day to give it a chance.

if it's not too much of a hassle..

if you (or anybody else not using true tone) put a piece of white paper next to your X when using ,say, Messages (because there's a lot of white there)..

does the screen look bluer to you now when comparing to the paper? (or the paper looks warmer)

Couldn't even get there b/c display was faulty out of the box. I'd love to see some side-by-side of true tone vs not.

After a few days with it on, it just looks dumb with trutone off.
With trutone on it feels like it’s part of the room I’m in, with it off there is a weird ‘cardboard cutout’ feeling to it, like it’s been photoshopped into reality.

Off. It is WAY too aggressive on the X. The True Tone on my 8 pushed the screen more yellow than on my iPad. But it was not so much that I couldn’t get used to it (and did). But, the X pushes the screen even more yellow than on the 8 and it is just too much. Even with the True Tone off, my screen has a slight yellow tinge but at least it’s useable. It’s a shame, because I really like the feature on my iPad!
