At the same time, it's hard to say the average person should spend 899 on this phone when they can have much better at 250 more.

Plus it seems this LCD screen is lesser quality than older iphones: That’s not to say it matches the quality of previous iPhone LCDs. The iPhone XR LCD definitely shifts a little pink and drops brightness quickly when you look at it off-axis, which often leads to a bit of a shimmery effect when you move the phone around. I noticed that shimmer right away, but I had to point it out to other people for them to see it. (It’s one of those things you might not notice at first, but you can’t un-see it.) Apple told me the XR display should match previous iPhone LCDs in terms of performance, but side by side with an iPhone 8 Plus, the off-axis shifts are definitely more pronounced. You will also definitely notice the huge bezel around the entire display, which flows into the notch.
I doubt it. That's one person's opinion and he even said he had to point out what he saw.

Of course, for anyone using a 6 Plus, 6s Plus, 7 Plus, or an 8 Plus, the screen pixel density is a big downgrade.

As I've said before in other threads, Apple could build a 5.2" LCD XR little brother which would have the exact same screen real estate as the 5.5" OLED XS, but in a smaller footprint, using that same 326 ppi LCD screen.

This is the the same scenario as the 6.1" XR vs 6.5" XS Max. These two units show the same screen real estate, but in a smaller footprint with the XR.
No, anyone coming from the Plus series probably will think the screen is excellent—because it is. The slightly lower pixel density is un-noticeable by most. Being a larger display, people will hold it farther away than they would a Plus model (or a 6/7/8) so it won’t be an issue. Check it out on Friday for yourself.

Those who are into the highest specs, are going to go for the XS anyway. But you won’t get that for $749. The $749 model has lower specs, than the $999/1,099 model, that’s just the way it is.

I tried to skim through most of them, but maybe I missed it. Did any reviews touch on whether these have any of the LTE or Wi-Fi issues the XS and XS Max do? The closest thing I found was in the Tom's Guide review – that the XR and one of the XS devices have similar download speeds (but the XR's upload speed is around half). But that's not the same thing. Hoping the XR won't have LTE or Wi-Fi issues!

All these reviews, and not a single reviewer (that I've seen) did a side-by-side cellular connectivity test of the XR to the XS or XS Max. Given the number of reports of cellular connectivity and throughput problems with the XS and XS Max, I hoped that at least one reviewer would've gone out of their way to test that instead of simply putting the XR next to the XS and XS Max and saying (as several of them did that I saw), "Look! The XR has thicker bezels." No ****, Sherlock.

Did you not read the part where reviewers claim that you can't really even tell the difference unless you're looking at the XR side by side with the XS? I think the screen thing is blown way out of proportion.
The whole device - is a screen... if I am in the market for a phone, I am getting the phone with the better screen.. because.. the whole phone is a screen

Yeah, I intentionally do not have the Facebook app on my phone and I have background update turned off for all but a few key apps which I think helps.

Fair point about the cell reception though. While I never have an issue getting through the day while I am in the city, my work does take me to remote sites with poor cell reception occasionally and I can pretty much watch the battery drain at those times (I did end up buying a smart battery case which I use during those situations, it's not the nicest looking case, but it works well). I do wonder if the XR's battery would get me through the day when I am working at a site with poor reception or if I would still need something to supplement it.

I told a guy at my office who works in the field occasionally to not get the XS and instead get the XR. I think he will love the additional battery life.

The Facebook app is a hog. If you want to use Facebook on your phone a trick is to just save the Safari bookmark to your home screen. You can still check Facebook with one touch but Safari will protect your battery drain. But I just don't use Facebook enough to even do that.

I have one on order already, due to arrive Friday. It's for the wife. BTW, I hold my 7 Plus the same distance as I held my 5S.

Besides having mixed feelings about the screen size, the things that bugged me about the 5S were the 1 GB RAM (so lots of Safari tab reloads), and the pixel density.

Nah, I bought nothing for myself. Not getting the XS, because it's a downgrade in screen width vs. my 7 Plus, and the XS is ridiculously priced. Not getting the XS Max because it's ridiculously priced. Sticking with my 7 Plus for now, and will reassess next year.

I really want the LCD screen on the XR to work well for me (had to return the XS due to the PMW hurting my eyes) -- but the gif he posted you can see exactly what he is talking about in terms of off-axis shift. My hope is either 1) it was that screen and it needs to warm up a bit, or 2) I can live with after a bit of adjustment.

I guarantee you it won't be an issue in person. Go look at it.

Go look at what? I don't have the phone yet. The color shift of the XS drove me crazy, so the fact that Nilay pointed it out makes we a bit worried that it might be noticeable enough.

Go check it out Friday. Nilay is a pretty terrible tech review, tbh.

No I had the 6+, 6S + and 7+ and whichever way you spin it the Xr is a lower resolution display.

And this doesn’t bother anyone?
Probably only reason while I’m still looking into buying X’s over Xr.

Since the iPhone XR only has a single-lens rear camera (it has a wide-angle lens, but not a telephoto lens), it doesn't capture as much depth information as the dual-lens camera on the iPhone XS.

This means that when you swipe to Portrait mode in the Camera app, the background-softening effect will only work if you're snapping a picture of a person, since Apple has decided to train the camera's machine learning on human shapes. Try to snap a Portrait photo of your food, or your cat, or a pumpkin (because it's pumpkin season) and "No person detected" will appear at the top of the photo frame. The iPhone XR also only has three lighting options in Portrait mode, versus five on the iPhone XS.

Already lots of discussion on this earlier.

However, for many people it's not quite so bad, since most people use portrait mode to shoot pix of people. Internet cat pix will be a problem though.

The silver lining is that it uses the 1X lens, so you can have more in the frame.

Which leads me to say that it would be better if this were made of plastic or aluminium. Is wireless charging really worth the extra weight and fragility of glass? You can put it in a case, but that makes an already heavy phone heavier.

None of these reviewers tested pwm/lte issues... these are apple selected “reviewers”, for real tests, we have to wait few more days
I don't think think pwm should be an issue since it is an LCD screen (from my understanding LED backlit LCD screens still can use pwm but it is high frequency and doesn't tend to cause an issue, whereas OLED panels use low frequency pwm which is what causes eye strain issues for a decent sized portion of the population).
I too am curious to see how well the iPhone XR performs in low signal situations. Poor cellular performance in low signal situations would be a deal breaker for me.

Fortunately my 6S has 2GB and despite all the complaining about iOS 11, I never had an issue. iOS 12 is even better. If I had to upgrade today I’d probably get a 7 but could probably talk myself into an XR. The pixel density definitely wouldn’t scare me away, but if I were coming from a Plus I might notice the difference. I’ll check them out in store.

Same. I could tell the difference between a 7 and a Plus but not at my regular viewing distances. Coming from a Plus I hope it’s not glaringly noticeable. Reviews seemed mixed, but reviewers are also scrutinizing everything up close, side by side, and most likely used to higher end OLEDs as daily drivers for a while now. I hope it works out because I would be saving $350 from the XS and gain considerable battery life. Personally the Plus has just enough battery life most days. Some of us use our phones heavily for work and for me, the XS would most likely need to be charged at some point. I supposed fast charging mitigates this greatly but that’s also another expense.
