Are the sim free models having this issue because I’m sim free with none of these issues
In my house we have an ATT iPhone 8 and Simfree model but using ATT card from my previous phone but in my new Max. Both are fine on WiFi but poor cellular service at home. However, I’m on the highway now and service is LTE and pretty fast.

I can tell especially compared to my Note 8 which have Qualcomm.
Apple being Apple... dropping Qualcomm like that. They do have that choice.
I do think Apple will make a new update to fix this issue.

A lot of people are posting about the number of signal bars they have. I think it's been stated how that is not a good indicator. It would be better if people would be able to post speed test results as that's more data to look at vs bars which aren't really representative?

I've posted a few times on this thread already but I'll lay it out so maybe it'll help others corroborate their experience. Again if you are not having issues then that's awesome and I'm jealous. But it does seem like this is more than a "oh hey look at these guys complaining about nothing"

My issue details:
  • iPhone Xs Max on AT&T - activated in apple store with a new SIM
  • located in NYC
  • previous phone was the 7+ on AT&T
  • LTE/cell service - averaging ~1-3 mbps in ALL locations where I have had ~30+ mbps prior
  • wifi - averaging ~10 mbps on known networks where I have had ~100+ mbps prior
  • All speed tests done with Ookla
  • Wife's iPhone 6s, iPad Air 2, MBP (~2015), and all other devices are performing normally on the same network
What I have tried with no results:
  • Updated carrier settings: AT&T v33.2
  • Reset network settings
  • Reset modem/router (using Airport Extreme)
  • Airplane mode on/off
  • Power on/off
Conclusions:
  • I know people are doubting the veracity of these posts, but I am definitely confirming my problems
  • Some people think this is only affecting those in rural/fringe areas. That's not true as I am in NYC
  • I have raised an Apple support ticket and tried speaking with support via chat - they were unhelpful
  • I have an appointment in store this afternoon and will post if I receive any more information

I haven't done a through job of testing my signal strength but I feel there is an issue. I'm in Sacramento and ive noticed that I'm getting less signal in my house. I usually have 5 bars which I agree may not be the best indicator of actual signal. I have not run comparison speed tests on my device. I also am coming off the iPhone 7+ on AT&T. My girlfriend sent me some animojis and while I was on Wi-Fi, I would get a download box that would take over 10 min to finish. when it was done it wasn't the animoji it was a file type pic of something the iPhone didn't under stand. I had her send a few off wifi they showed up fine on Wi-Fi issues. I've never had issues with my network and I doubt I need to port forward anything for the iPhone signal that would be ridiculous. ive also never had issues like this on my previous phones. there is definitely an issue going on. Lets hope apple is aware and that is what 12.01 is going to solve and soon.

I don't think you understand how difficult it is to make a product like this. No software is bug free and it's actually impossible to find every issue before shipping a product. How about you learn how this stuff works instead of making unreasonable suggestions such as this?

...

Stop jumping on the bandwagon.

Indeed. Apple has never been a leader in the wireless chipset of their 'smartphone'. They typically prioritize CPU over wireless. Other manufacturers offered features like 4x4 MIMO and 256QAM over 2 years ago.

Great all round device but speed and signal has never been a strong-suit (i.e. priority) for apple.

Early adopters complain of bugs in newly released products? Color me shocked.

No, for a while I thought I just had a bad phone (luck of the draw and it was just mine). I keep having to restart my phone during the day because apps LITERALLY won't load and find a signal (ETA, Maps, Weather Channel, App Store,) Safari would stall out. So this "early adopter" is not just "Complaining", I think there might be something here..... you always just point fingers much?

The Note ranges are now basically just a Galaxy S, released months later with a stylus that few use in 2018. Samsung's support of these devices is also extremely terrible. I have 2 Note's that Samsung stopped supporting and are useless and stuck on outdated software, just 2 years after their launch. Yes, even with the mythical Qualcomm chipset.

This lack of support and fragmented software is something that Android manufacturers just don't seem to get. Versus apple, who just released the latest iOS 12 for an iphone 5s released 5 years ago.

I am seeing more and more that just cause I have a LTE signal it doesn't mean that the data is working on AT&T

Just checking in to see if Apple has acknowledged this at all yet. Not surprised to see that they haven't. I am very disappointed. To the point of actually downgrading all the way to an iPhone 7 that can be bought south of $500 brand new...

I am not sure what you add by posting apple is great and there is nothing wrong with my phone 30X in this thread.

Probably for the same reason you are posting in absolutes and being dismissive of any poster who reports no issues, or suggests the sky might not be falling.

No, you are literally just complaining. You have a right to, and I'm not telling you not to. You're complaints are probably legitimate, but they are still complaints. If they're legitimate, and I assume they are, then give Apple more than a few days to figure it out.

It's been only a few days since the new phones were released. Apple addresses bugs and issues in their products faster than any other company I know. But even Apple, the best company for addressing bugs and issues, still needs a bit of time.

It's the price you willingly paid for being an early adopter. You could have waited a few weeks, or even a few months. But you self-selected to be the kind of person that gets a new product the day it launches, with all risks.

I thank you for it, and look forward to buying your phone on the second-hand market for a good discount next year when all the kinks are worked out and when the next shiney new thing launches.

Thank you for this thread. I was planning to get the iPhone Xs Max this weekend. Paying 1.3k for a defective product is unjustified. Apple should have stuck to Qualcomm on their premium products while experimenting with Intel in the older phones / iPhone Xr. I will stick to my aging 6s, or even might take the plunge to the Android ecosystem.

I went from a 6 Plus to an XS Max on T-Mobile. The additional T-Mobile LTE bands added since the 6 models has greatly improved reception in places where I got almost no signal with my 6.

As for the 2.4 GHz Wifi, mine chose the 2.4 network when I was doing the initial setup. It continued to choose 2.4 until I went into WiFi settings to "Forget This Network". When I reconnected to my WiFi my XS Max chose the 5 Ghz network and has never reverted to 2.4 since.

I have an Netgear Orbi router/satellite combo with the same SSID for the 2.4 and 5Gz networks.

Have any of you tested in the built in Field test mode. Open up the dial pad type in

*3001#12345#*

Then hit send.

This will give you tower info and power levels

From there click LTE and then Serving Cell Meas. Then rspo is your signal to noise ratio. The lower the number the better the closer to -44 the stronger your signal. Anything above -120 then you probably don’t even have a signal.

DP

I'm in my basement with an Xs on Tmobile. My signal is -109 and still pull in satisfactory numbers.

I am actually working with apple to get this problem fixed. I not being a cheerleader/ defender like you are ! If your phones working great I am happy for you but saying it over and over again in this thread helps nobody

Tested Verizon LTE in midtown Manhattan today. Got 193 Mbps download and 33 upload on my XS. Seems like no issue since I did a Network Reset.

a network reset is only a bandaid fix if you have bad cellular connectivity issue

That is extreme. This issue will either be solved by software upgrade in the next week or so. Or you can return your phone and get a new one. You are still in your 14-day trial period, so you don't even have to make a warranty claim.
Several million XS and XS Max have been sold and are being used by now. If this was impacting even 10% of users out there the story would be on the front page of the NY Times.

Their are some bad units out there I guess
Or people just don't notice all of the problems yet . Lot of people on this site are very quick to defend Apple but I feel like Apple should have already owned the problem and issued a statement yesterday. They have my logs since Friday and know that there are problems with these devices .

I live in the Bahamas and my bars are filled with no issues

Just cause your bars are filled it's doesn't mean that there is data flowing into your device

I didn't leave the store until I check everything on my phone. I don't believe in leaving a store without testing all daily used features
