Like many other people.....the only reason I am upgrading from the iPhone X to the Xs Max is screen size. The only question I have is there some software tweaks like taking a selfie with an AR item in the background reserved for just the XS's?

I could be wrong and probably am but I feel like the potrait mode on XR is limited to 3 and the XS/Max has 5 and the XR has 5x zoom whilst XS/Max has 10x but other than that software wise, I think that's about it.

If the XS and XS Max are not dramatically better then the X why would you want to wait for the XR? Using that logic would make the XR worse then the X. When you are paying that much money you might as well pay a little more and get the best especially when you purchase a luxury brand like Apple. The XR just screams "I want an iPhone, but I really can't afford it." The extra money you spend will make your experience better and people will notice you have the best iPhone.

You may want to read the article again because that’s not what the author states.

I usually buy an iPhone every year, its like ritual for me... But I was sitting there Friday morning with the pre-order screen up and i just wasn't feeling it.... This is the second time I will ever skip an iPhone upgrade (first time being the 4S) Going to stick with my X and definitely get next years.

By that logic is anyone not rocking a 15” MBP or an iMac Pro not Apple-ing hard enough? The XR will be a great choice for a lot of people (like teenagers).

This is why after I changed my mind from getting an XS Max for 1249 and opted to get an XR when it releases. The size, and the features is an upgrade from my current iPhone. I do not feel I'll be missing out if I do not get a XS Max and opt for the XR.

I considered it. The screen, camera, battery, and huge LTE improvements made me go with the Max. I think people will be happy with the Xr either way though, it's a great upgrade.

Do you really notice what kind of iPhone people have? I only notice if a friend tells me about it..........for most people I don't give a rats ass, and for sure they don't about me. iPhone XR will be a great phone for most people just as the 8 and 8 Plus were before. And at 750 it hardly screams "I really can't afford it".

XS Max + 512GB is a very significant reason to upgrade, even if you have an X. Those two specs alone (size and storage) are good reasons - assuming of course you care about those particular features.

Will there be an MFI programme for sunglasses going forward?

I'm still holding out for a SE replacement with headphone jack.

If you really dig into what the reviewers are saying and click on all the links that MacRumors listed at the end of this article--they are a lot more positive than MacRumors made it sound. The headline they used for this article is completely counter to what the reviews are saying in a lot of cases. The gist I'm getting from most of the reviews is: If you must have the best iPhone there is, these are absolutely the best iPhones and ARE better than the iPhone X. Most iPhone X owners will probably want to upgrade to the Xs Max if they're upgrading at all. If you want to upgrade but don't want to spend all the money that these cost, you might want to consider the Xr later on IF you don't mind the compromises. (I don't think the typical Xr customer will care about the differences.)

It's an s model. These are typical s year reviews. MacRumors clickbait headlines get really old sometimes.

Ordered the xs max so I have the bigger screen and it’s only $4 a month more than my X on the upgrade program. A no brainer for me regardless if it’s not that faster. I just want the screen real estate. Friday can’t come fast enough.

Depth Control is reserved for the 2018 iPhones...the iPhone X can edit them but cannot take them.

We'll be seeing MFi sunglasses soon and of course we'll be paying premium for these sunglasses. Thanks Apple I'm super excited with this knowing that my sunglass is MFi I'm sure it's a good quality and up to Apple quality standard.
Cynicism (trolling?) aside, FaceID works with the vast majority of sunglasses so this is a small problem to resolve. Curious about the reviewer’s comment regarding having to hold the phone too close for FaceID to work considering how quickly it does work I am surprised it doesn’t unlock as he brings the phone towards his face in the morning. I have tried this with my iPhone X and it takes effort to prevent FaceID from working; I literally have to “sneak up” on the phone. Seems to me both the IR sunglasses and holding the phone too close to your face (in such a way that it can’t unlock before you get it to your face) are issues that will affect a small subset of users and not reflective of most users experience and certainly not worth the weight given in this review or by this comment.

I couldn't care less what phone people have. And I couldn't also care less to "show off" mine. But the one thing I've learned in life - you do get what you pay for. In things like this, its the incremental differences that add up in the more expensive items. Plus, there are some features you only get in the XS series - like 512GB.

Perfect! That's exactly what I wanted. I'm upgrading from a 4 year old iPhone 6 Plus. I almost pulled the trigger last year with the X, but I really wanted the bigger display along with another year of refinement for Face ID. I'm quite happy I ordered the Xs Max.

Im in the same boat. Running a 4 year old iPhone 6 Plus. Ready for a phone that will last me the next 4-5 years. Ordered an iPhone XS Max 256gb. Can’t wait for Friday.

Consider waiting for the XR? There are so many people out there with iPhone 5/6/7, so the XS isn’t a good upgrade for them either? Lol.

While I can understand that most of these reviewers assume their audience primarily consists of people who buy the latest device on an annual basis, I do wish they'd at least acknowledge the fact that there are plenty of people out there who keep their phones for years before upgrading. It's not really practical to address all of the earlier versions, I guess.

I am upgrading from a 6s to the XS Max, and I also purposefully chose NOT to upgrade to the X last year because I wanted to wait for any kinks with FaceID to be resolved.

Oh well, I'm used to always being a little bummed when reviews come out for my chosen model because I prefer to upgrade on the "s" cycle which means there will never be any real ground breaking feature to get hyped. I'm still super excited for my phone to arrive on Friday though!! :)

From a 5/6/7/SE owner perspective, the XR is already a very good upgrade.

Of course it is, but what a lot of these reviewers are doing is putting DOWN the XS and almost calling it garbage Lol.

Like no, it’s still a great phone and there are a few things that make it worth it over the XR.

They don’t have to put down the XS to uplift the XR.

The main reason I didn't go for the Max is that I can't justify the price when the XR serves my needs too and is considerably cheaper. If the XR didn't serve my needs, I'd most likely go for the Max.

Honestly, that’s not how I read those reviews (I am an X owner).
The question is “Is it a big jump from the X?”. The answer is, to put it simply, most likely not. The X was a big jump from the 7 (and even the 8 if you ask me). If you take the XS in its own bubble, it’s a great phone. It’s arguably the most advanced thing out there. But when you review it, you can’t do it by separating it from its predecessor.
