Maybe I shouldn’t have said obvious in general. But to me it’s obvious that they’re going for keeping things clean, simple and unified across devices.

If it’s a design decision that makes it lazy? When you think about ALL the work that went into these phones, all the insane processing stuff they showed on stage, you think the lack of battery percentage is lazy? You truly don’t understand if that’s the case.
not really. apple has been skimping out on software with bugs for years. They need a huge software overhaul. iOS 12 is a big upgrade though so It should fix a lot of things.
But yes apple needs updated UI. They need to have options of what you want to put where. Like on the watch you can change where you want things and what you want. Thats what needs to be done on the iPhone IMO. It will make a lot of people happy to have their icons in any orientation they want on the grid too. The home screen is cluttered and old. They need to do something with iOS 13

I wouldn't say cluttered, but yea it could be cleaned up a bit. I think complications on the lock screen and maybe a scrollable/swipeable widget area on the home screen would be nice and easy additions, without it being a major change. Everything was rumored to be pushed to iOS 13 so we should see big changes next year.

I may be wrong, but I read they kept it at a 3x (like the Plus) to avoid apps having to reworked for the larger screen. I agree though, some changes to the Max would be nice, but I think they pushed all UI changes to iOS 13.
You lost me. Are you saying the the apps on the Max are just going to be scaled apps written for other screen sizes, more or less?

definitely cluttered if you are using up all the levels for apps. This to me looks really bad. Having a more open feel will definitely improve things

If they implemented the design / aspect ratio of the X last year and auto layout correctly (not 100% sure here on the technical details), then apps will look good on the Max and take advantage of the real estate.

Good news is that it sounds like there was significant spring board (home screen) changes coming to iOS 12 that were pushed to iOS 13. Hopefully we see something interesting at WWDC next year.

Interesting, definitely doesn't feel as cluttered to me on the X (I attached a screenshot). I can see your point here though. I wish they would remove the app names, that would help. You're right though, more space would help a bit. I just never considered it cluttered because it's just a grid of apps.

I think they are going to be scaled Plus apps to start, but with the layout of the X, which was a bit better in my opinion. Apple apps will likely take advantage of the bigger screen to start, but soon developers will follow. I am not expert in this area, but just going from what I have seen/expect.

I keep mine like this. I like how open it is.
I miss the jailbreaking days where I could put them in the corners or the lower half of the phone where I would move them to if I could

Nice. Yea, so it works for now, but I agree that they could make better use of the space/home screen though. Yea that was something I always liked about jailbreaking. I would usually remove the app names and shrink the icons a bit. Just felt nicer to me.

shrinking the icons I miss also. last phone I had jailbroken was the 6+ and the home screen looked so good

All they need to do is let the user choose between candy bar / percentage. That's it! This isn't rocket science.

It's completely unacceptable that you "can't" display your battery percentage on a SIX AND A HALF INCH display.

I seem to recall how many disappointed people there were when Apple decided to eliminate the battery % meter on the home screen.

Seeing as there is a bit more real estate on the Xs MAX, is there a possibility Apple brings it back for those of you that love having it as a constant?

Asking for a friend. :)

Hopefully. It was a good feature. For the X, I just swipe left on the widget area to check. Its annoying I have to do that, but oh well.

I never look at it anyway.... the X has always easily lasted me through the day.

But i do think they should let people customize what they want to see in that bar.

Isnt i enough to get the % when swiping down from top-left? Do you honestly need it ALL the time? We already have the battery meter all the time, which is perfect to see the approximate level.

What’s wrong with options? Especially options that previously existed.

Then everyone is happy. You could continue without it, and others could enjoy having it back.

Very weak apple , this was one of the most requested small things from this gigantic new screen . I guess adding more info is too hard for them.

Another alternative would be to just use the battery meter from the Apple Watch.

Why is that obvious?

If it’s a design decision to have the same number of rows of icons, for example, as my 6+ despite a much larger and better screen, it strikes me as a pretty poor one.

What are the upsides to such a decision, design-wise?

Who said the design decision was for an upside? Assuming is one thing but it doesn’t make it correct.
