My main concern is what will people think?

I would feel ashamed if people though I was using 3rd party apps to make my face look buttery smooth.

I’d be horrified if people thought that about me
Why would you allow others to think that?
You could proactively tell anyone who cares that you "use a special app to make my face look buttery smooth"
Let them guess what you use for that.
That assumes that anyone else would notice, or even care about that...
It's a selfie, you know. No one cares about selfies other than their own.

Funny thing is the vast majority of people don’t care about selfies of others at all. Don’t expect them to open them up and zoom around on a 100% pixel level. Only folks on photography forums would pixel peep to that degree- and of course the big ego that took the snap in the first place.

Folks, it appears smoother due to a lack of local contrast. The new "smart" software (and mostly the Smart HDR feature) shoot faster and with higher ISO, leading to more noise, so much more aggressive noise reduction is required. This leads to a smoothing effect. Disable Smart HDR to make much of it go away.

Not sure what folks who see your selfie will think but this post makes you look like a vain, self-adsorbed egotist.

hmm... Why not? Maybe you will discover that Apple is providing (or has already done) software fixes for those photo issues that you chose to post about - making your question in this thread meaningless - so, you can choose to simply move on.
You did ask what other people will think...
No one else will even notice the quality of the pictures that you take - unless you are selling those images.

I want before and after photos to see if Apple did enough. Otherwise I’m not gonna buy

I agree. I wouldn't buy the before and after pics, either.
But, be sure to come back with those pics.
If you haven't bought a new iPhone yet, I wish you luck.

Seems like the front camera in the new model does NOT capture wider photos, and does an image smoothing thing that to me looks *awful*

TRUELaLey Sister. So TrU3 and agree with u. Actually since the XS has bigger lenses and improved sensors.

It seems like my wrinkles and pores are much more visible which is not issue on my older iPhones such as X and below. Even if i download a specific app that hides my pores it looked so unnatural though.

Pretty sure that the selfie camera "smoothing" thing has already been discussed and addressed in an iOS update some time ago.
