I hope this gains traction and Apple tones it down. It overly smooths skin on the main back camera as well. I would rather have more detail in my pics than artificial smoothing.

4 years...exaggerate? a phone in 2018 is showing less detail than a phone made in 2013. i don't think it's an exaggeration to call it an absolute piece of garbage if it can't even stay on par with a selfie cam from the iphone 6 made 5 YEARS AGO

Samsung gives you the option to turn it off. Apple on the other hand...Guess this doesn't concern me. I think I've used the selfie camera on my last 5 iPhone models maybe... 4 times in 5+ years?I already know I'm ugly. No beauty face lens is going to help that.
I don't remember Samsung getting this much attention when they had it on their photos. It was a lot more obvious too. lol.
So in other words this is a non-conspiracy, and nothing to do with vanity. When taking a selfie in a situation where lighting is less than ideal, such as indoors or outdoors in areas with lower lighting, the iPhone XS Max appears to be applying a drastic smoothing effect that can hide freckles, blemishes, and other issues.
In full outdoor lighting the problem is less apparent, which has led to speculation that the skin smoothing is actually a result of some heavy-handed noise reduction techniques.
So. Apple identifies you're a bit ugly. But rather than upset you by telling you, fixes it for you so you look smokin' hot for your friends. And now you're annoyed?
This was exactly my response. I figured I'd be one of like 5 people who care about losing detail. A little added noise reduction is the least of my worries. The number of pictures of family members I get now that I can hardly recognize is really making me crazy-- everybody wants to look like some doe eyed anime version of themselves. It's either this or Snapchat filters. Take your pick.
Honestly, the point of a camera is to take a picture of things as they actually are, post processing is to fix things.So. Apple identifies you're a bit ugly. But rather than upset you by telling you, fixes it for you so you look smokin' hot for your friends. And now you're annoyed?
Exactly, this is why I love my point and shoot camera, unless I specifically tell it to do otherwise, it takes a picture of what is actually there. This was exactly my response.
