I really wonder about the improved wireless charging on these new phones, and how the hell the iPhone Xr does depth mapping for portrait mode with just a single lens. How does it work??

And crazy about the battery life of the R! Insane that it lasts so much longer.

One thing I really didn’t understand quite during the keynote was how the 3D Touch replacement will work. Did they remove all 3D Touch functionality EXCEPT the camera hard press on the lockscreen!? Or does it work everywhere and just feels different?

Still don't get why the XR is the middle sized one and not the smallest one. Also: might want to edit this: "iPhone XS and iPhone XS are available in Silver, Space Gray, and Gold finishes."

So the writer thinks if we want the best iphone, we should buy the newest, pricey ones.

"Apple had to make some trade-offs to get the price down."

They certainly didn't have to. They chose to, so their profit margins would remain huge. Fair enough, they are a company out to make money, but it annoys me when I hear pundits talk about how Apple had to skimp on this or that feature to get the cost down. They have 100%+ profit margins and $300bn in the bank. They could give them away at this point and survive.

It might be my eurocentric perspective, but i don’t think the Xr is a clear winner. While some specs looks very good, the price is not „cheap“ for the omission of a state of the art display PPI, 3D Touch and Dual Cameras. There is potential for buyers remorse for those, who can’t or don’t want to afford an XS Max.

Did any of the first handson videos show if there is a Plus like landscape mode? Or is there any comparison of usable area of screen? Because i suspect there will be quite a surprise for those, who expect to have the same visible area like Plus. The X cuts of a lot of the video in comparison to the Plus and i doubt that a stretched 828p screen will be so much better.

Most people walking into an Apple Store will not ask for PPI or RAM or 3D Touch.

What they will notice is the XR having a thin-bezel display, Face ID, and does not disappoint in build quality. They'll also notice the Xs Max is nearly 50% more expensive.

I think it's pretty clear the XR is a winner for Apple.

6.1" is the average display size for new smartphones in 2018.

But the Xs is smaller? That's strange to me. Why would they make that one smaller than average. And people who buy "cheaper" phones probably would rather a smaller one, right?

What does R stand for?
(a) R is < S
(b) Recession model
(c) Other?

The only 2 things that stand out for me in favor of the S are gigabit LTE and the camera. Neither is a showstopper.

The XR is going to sell like hotcakes.

Most people have suggested "regular"

No one is talking about this, but you can NOT get an unlocked Xr, only Xs/XsMax. That can be a deal breaker to many including myself.

In US you can’t but in Europe you can. I’ll be going for an XR simply because the features it has and the price is worth it over spending £1300 on a XS max.

To downgrade the iPhone Xr with kiddy crayola colors and inferior finish is a slap in the face to customers. At $749 starting it should have the same build and finish of the Xs minus features like 3D Touch, single vs dual camera sensor, LCD vs OLED, etc.

Can someone describe the difference between LTE advance vs Gigabit-class LTE? The latter is 5G and only being adopted early 2019 in some cities?
It’s all 4G LTE. It is just about how much data can be poured down through the wireless chip on your phone. Gigabit LTE chips can handle more at a time. Depending on your carrier and the capability of the local network, in real life it probably doesn’t mean much. On a good carrier in a good location you *might* notice the difference.

There are fewer people who want smaller 5.8" phones. If these people want 5.8", they pay a premium.

The XR is essentially a one-size-fits-all device. The average of what everyone wants. At $749, it's literally priced at Apple's reported average selling price of all iPhones for the last year ($796 - $724).

It will probably only work on the lockscreen - long-pressing does other things elsewhere in iOS that can't be easily replaced.

It will likely work the same way the iPad does now everywhere else.

Very helpful article MacRumors. Refuse to pay full price on any X model though, amongst other things. If a trade in offer is acceptable to me, and no Android options I want are available in December, perhaps I will consider an XR.

I need to stop reading Apple brass BS doublespeak though.

Important thing MacRumors missed.... The iPhone Xs does NOT have the landscape home screen and iPad-like landscape views from the iPhone Plus models. The iPhone Xs Max DOES have those views, BUT, so does the iPhone Xr. That extra 0.3 inches makes up for the rounded corners to give you the full "Plus" experience in the iPhone X design.

I’m pretty sure I’m the only one that actually cares about and uses all the time. Force touch! That’s the only reason why I won’t get the Xr. Other than that it would be a super easy choice.

Yes, ArsTechnica did a hands on and they said the Xr DOES have the Plus-style landscape mode.

Does the XR do landscape ffs? Nobody knows, journos are incompetent. I’m going to have to buy one to find out.

Yes, see my previous comment. Check my comment above.

and the quote....
The phone's sides are made of aluminum—a less ostentatious alternative to what you'll find in the XS and XS Plus. But the back and the front are still all glass. In my hand, the XR felt just like an iPhone 6S Plus but with more screen real estate. Like the XS Max, the XR supports the Plus' higher-density app views in landscape.
