It will make a comeback. There are already so many reports on how sometimes FACE ID works and sometimes it doesn't. I can see Apple using the Logo for Touch ID.

Yeah, no. Face ID is fantastic. I have had my X a week. I have had two or three incidents in that time where Face ID did not work and I was very purposely testing it to see at what point it would not work.

I am amazed at how well it works, even when part of my face is obscured. I don’t even have to think about it, that is how great it works for me.

Definitely not - and to be clear, I'm not talking about where you (or anyone) thinks they should, this is my best guess as to their direction. 30 pin >> Lightning, Headphone jack >> nothing (or Lightning), TouchID >> FaceID, they don't reverse these sort of major design directions. Heck, I don't even think they'll go back to 16:9 a/r displays.

Has Apple ever taken something away and then added it back to a newer model? I highly doubt they’d bring it back. They move on

As much I did like TouchID, I found the reliability of FaceID to be much better for me.

Especially for Apple Pay, it’s amazingly fast. I love the fact that it preauthenticates before you hold it to the machine, so you know it’ll definitely work. There’s been so many times TouchID failed to read my fingerprint at the checkout when there’s a huge lineup waiting behind me.

Has anyone noticed at all that the OP's post is dated from September 12, 2017? So I'm not sure how this thread got bumped when the iPhone X announced during that time before any other rumors were debunked about touch ID making a comeback.

To the point, Apple stated Face ID is their future and Craig Federighi has also confirmed touch ID is no longer an option for the iPhone, with Face ID being the primary.

Here lies Touch ID. Dead and buried. Never to be resurrected. R. I. P

Apple could give us a touch ID on the back as a fallback if they want to. I personally don’t see that coming, but it’s possible. I personally would welcome it. It gives us a choice like Samsung has.

I don’t think it will though I wish it would. I’m not even especially a privacy nut (quite happily use Touch ID) but the idea of exactly what you look like being avaialable digitally is an unsettling thought, for all talk of secure enclaves, nothing is truly fully infallibly secure. A fingerprint is one thing but your whole face seems a little creepy to me personally. Then there’s the whole ‘attention’ thing which raises even more potential concerns; people have already talked about ideas like ads that you have to watch to get to content and I can see that whole surveillance branch going even further. Obviously never fast enough that people realise what’s happening, just slowly encroaching towards things that for most people would be a big no no if you tried to introduce it all at once.
