mine did the SAME crap

and FYI my iphone 4 has been flawless

But eventually it let me restore, then I installed the update and had to re-sync and re-organize all my apps and folders, I really wish itunes kept my folders in-tact

But now I have everything back to normal and it works great again, sorry it did this to you too

Try a different USB port or computer. Has to be 4.0.1 tho. 4.0 will give you an error every time now unless you have your blobs backed up.

How many tries did it take you? Im trying on 4.0.1 again.

took me like 3 tries, then it finally let me do a damn restore, which is a major pain.

Luckily though I didnt lose anything in the process as I had everything backed up properly

I do have 9.2 and my phone is stuck in recovery mode. ive tried like 10 times already and get the same error. I do have an appointment with the apple store but thought you would have some ideas here before i went

Did the same to mine.

Solution:
Download from another source. Not Itunes.
Connect iPhone to Itunes
If using a MAC, click hold down ALT and click RESTORE.
Window should pop up, locate the downloaded version.
Click restore.
Done!ios4.0.1

From the apple website
"Error 2000-2009: If you experience this issue on a Mac, disconnect third-party devices, hubs, spare cables, reset the SMC, and then try to restore. Learn how to reset the SMC. If you are using a Windows computer, remove all USB devices and spare cables other than your keyboard, mouse, and the device, restart the computer, and try to restore. If that does not resolve, try the USB issue-resolution steps and articles listed for Error 1604 above. If the issue continues, it may be related to conflicting security software."

anybody else have an alternative place to download at .. it has also bricked my iphone...apple is really start to press my buttons

the restore took me about 10 minutes (even if that). after that the phone restarted and i didn't use backup.

you should try redownloading the file, and putting the phone into dfu mode (iclarified.com has info on how to do this). then try restoring again by selecting the ipsw file.

Bricked here as well. Had to go to other PC and do restore. Now trying to do a backup restore from 1st pc but its taking forever and time remaining keeps getting longer....this isnt looking good at all.

Me too......If I have to reinstall iTunes will I lose my backup on there? Is there a way to keep that separately?

iPhone4 4.0.1 update bricking phone?

So, iTunes downloaded and installed 4.0.1 on my iPhone4 this afternoon and failed. After the phone reboots it will get stuck at the connect to iTunes screen and iTunes throws an 1004 error that the update failed.
I've tried restoring twice in DFU with no luck, I even tried restoring to 4.0 through DFU with the same result: Error 1004.

Anyone else having this issue?

I used Recboot to exit the connect to itunes screen and everything appears to be working now. Odd problem.

4.0.1 Bricking iPhone 4 During Update

Onto my THIRD attempt to update now using the restore method.

The update moves smoothly, then the bar freezes 60-70% way through and has been this way for 20 minutes yet again.

Any others?
