I had the exact same problem when I updated to 4.0, and again today updating to 4.0.1. In both instances the method below from user NickSherb solved the problem.

Hey I had the same problem, while beta testing 4.0 whats more so I was very worried. However, turns out you just need to uninstall itunes and some core files

If you are still unable to restore iPhone, remove iTunes by doing this:

If you are a Mac user, delete the following files:

2. /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DeviceLink.framework
3. /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileDevice.framework

After that, restart your Mac and install the latest version of iTunes. Repeat the normal restore again.

For Windows users, uninstall Apple Mobile Device Support and iTunes from your system, restart the computer and re-install the latest version of iTunes and try to restore again.

Onto my THIRD attempt to update now using the restore method.

The update moves smoothly, then the bar freezes 60-70% way through and has been this way for 20 minutes yet again.

Any others?

You tried to jailbreak your iPhone before? If so that's why I never supported jailbreaking. Cause if it mess up your phone then it should be called bankbreaking? :D

This is ridiculous for more than one reason. The jailbreak isn't out yet for the iP4, and jailbreaking has NEVER bricked a device where a DFU couldn't fix it...

Its not possible to ruin your phone by JB, you just put it in DFU and restore if anything goes wrong and good as new...

Don't say never, it has. Not since 1.1.x, but still, it has happened in the past :p

But yeah, on 2.0+ it cannot brick the device anymore

Same problem here, error 9. Apple support just told me to try a different USB port and turn off any firewalls. I'm trying again and I'm fairly certain this won't work so it looks like I'll be headin to the Apple Store for iPhone 4 #3

If you are getting an error code 9, might be on apple's end with overloaded servers, according to Apple's support forums

Same here. I am on hold with Apple Support right now and they have me trying again (my 10th time between 3 computers) and the guy is checking with his Supervisor to see what is going on because he can't find anything in his records to indicate this happening from an OS update.

Um contact apple? Why would you come on here first??

Because the people who do offer help here instead of snide comments, often are of more help than the call center.

Not dissing the help desk but giving props to the community. Yo.
