True, however if Apple wants the iPhone to succeed in the business world, they have to drastically improve their notifications system (with either software or hardware updates).

good point, agree totally

i for one don't read all my email. only the important emails that i'm expecting. an indicator light would blink all the time and get annoying. i guess someone could use the flash on the back as indicator light.

Good point. yes, I suppose it could be distracting if you dont read all your emails.

Then you guys would complain because it's always lit from spam mail.
and that it wears out the battery significantly.

A jailbroken app will eventually come with this, but a normal iPhone messaging code is private so there would be no way to tie in an LED notification to a normal iPhone. I asked a developer about this a while ago because I too wanted an indicator light.

That's required by law......

My Blackberry does not have any of that on it. Just "Blackberry" on the front..

but it'd be alright, cause you'd still be there to complain about all the complaints

OWNED!!!!!

as a compromise it would be nice if (as others have said for general notification updates), when you hit the home button it would tell you how many new emails you have without having to unlock the phone.

Works just fine for texts, calls and VMs, no reason it shouldn't work with email too.

Because the FCC codes are inside the phone, just covered inside where the user-replaceable battery is. While on the iPhone, there is no user openable cover that can hide all that legal text, so it must go on the outside.

good suggestion, nice compromise.

i think theres an app called "lockinfo" that can do that

IPhone doesn't have a removable back cover so it has to be displayed on the outside, while if you take the BB's battery cover off you should find the same info.

i see. it's kinda retarded that they left out a tiny indicator light, yet still opted to put all that "designed by apple in california, assembling in china...model....fcc..." crap on the back though. an indicator light would be very useful

This is a VERY VERY VERY dumb justification you are trying to make for adding a LED.

You want a LED to notify you? What if you have a missed call or an email? How will you know which one from the LED? the color? what about an SMS?

Yep, that's right. You don't just "add stuff cause there is space". It is a much much bigger decision than you think it is.

This would be easily solved if Apple just did something similar to the jailbroken app "Lock Info". There would be no intrusive LED but you wouldn't have to go through several steps to get the info. Just hit the home button and all your info is there. I will say that I like the blinky light on my work BB; I can leave my phone on my desk and see what's up.

This brings up a good point, is there a patent for the LED indicator?
I'm sure Apple wouldn't want another lawsuit.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_0 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8A293 Safari/6531.22.7)

Agreed

Not something I'd want on my iPhone!

Except I usually keep my phone on silent and only get vibrations. I check my phone 10 minutes later and I don't see anything on the unlock screen, so I'm thinking, did I get a mail message or am I hallucinating on that vibration?

The light could actually be very useful, green for new texts, blue for new mail, red for missed calls/voicemail... Hopefully the color would be washed out and not as bright as a Blackberry's LED.

I had that feature on one of my old phones (colors for different things). I don't remember if it was one of the WinMo phones are one of the Treos, but it was cool. An LED on the iPhone would/could be nice, especially if it was fully configurable.

More than an indicator LED, though, I'd like a dashboard screen so I could hit one of the buttons that shows the lock screen, but configurable information would be there in addition to the time and the "Slide to Unlock" message. My old WinMo phones let me see the number of unread/new emails, current time, current weather, next appointment in the calendar, etc. without having to unlock the phone and navigate any further. It was just the sort of information I'd like to see with a quick glance at the phone. That's pretty much the only thing I miss of those old POS phones.

Ok fanboy, just calm down. Youve already answered your own question. As others have pointed out, theres many ways for an indicator to let you know what type of notification you have.

How is the justification dumb? Most other smartphones have an led indicator. What do you think its for?

Are people really this **** lazy?

What a stupid ***** question. The whole point of having an iphone is to have email, internet, apps, etc on the go. If you arent lazy, ditch all this crap and just go home and use your computer.

Good news and bad news.

Bad news: You're taking the wrong approach in this thread. Calling names is probably going to get you banned. Not everybody that disagrees with you is a fanboy.

Good news: I agree. :)

Status Message indicator

The Droid market had an application with the perfect solution (unfortunately only for Droid phones). It was even better than my BB Bold2'a status light.

The Droid app was called NoLED and it had a different color floating icon on the black-out screen to indicate either message, missed call...etc.

I am really surprised coming from the Droid (which i returned only to get the Iphone 4) that it has some better features than the I4. Hopefully someone will make an application that applies this simple, effective idea to the Iphone series.
