You could get a matte screen protector, or something that acts as a dimmer, and just attach it to the phone, if you are really upset by how bright it is all the time

Is it just me? I hate it when auto brightness in any phone sets the brightness too low, especially at night. I prefer to always have a bright screen. Somehow I get eye fatigue when screens are too dim. I hate it.

In the dark even the lowest brightness setting is decently bright without the need to go beyond that for most (and even a desire for it to be even more dim for quite a few). That said, people certainly have different preferences when it comes to different things.

Well, rather than spending time on dimming the screen, you would better choose to change your bad habit: reading before going to sleep.
If you really don't want to change, buy a simple LED lamp. And light it up when you use your iPhone to read whatever you want. After completing reading, turn off your phone and LED lamp.
This is easier.

How do iPhones have "old school" screens again?

iPhones still use backlights. A lot of android handsets use more modern OLED screens which can be super dim if necessary.

I think you know this but won't accept that oled screens are basically superior in every way!

I think Apple should switch to OLED. Android screens are a lot more crisp than any phone Apple has ever had.

But fortunately the Zoom feature in fact does dim the screen darker. So problem solved.

This is not true. Yes, the S6 has the best display, but the iPhone has a great display. Having said that, I use an HTC One M9..

I think just because OLED can do some things better it doesn't mean that they are surperior in every way. There are many other things that go into a screen than just one or two aspects, like color reproduction, for example.

They tried to replicate everything that OLED's do in the iPhone 6. But still using old screen technology.

iPhones couldn't do 1080p or 720p until just last year.

iPhone 6 sales points
*higher contrast e.g. deeper blacks and sharper text
*incredible brightness and white balance
*wide angle

These are the exact points that differentiate OLED from LCD. But Apple is saying that they can replicate what you get with OLED by doing some revolutionary process on the LCD.

Just move to OLED. LCD It's not as good.

Nope I don't agree using auto brightness the iPhone screen is perfect in most situations I use it in.

I don't understand? Colour reproduction on OLED screens is superior!

Lies!

That is too much work. Why invert the colors so that everything looks funky? The phone should have a straight up night mode.

If we all dimmed our screens now, it would become pretty dim. But somehow at night, it's too bright.

It would be great for theaters and late night browsing.

Seriously. My 6+ screen is actually *too* dim sometimes in bed and rather than mess about with the auto-brightness (which is generally calibrated to my tastes) I have to switch the bedside light on. Perhaps my screen is just dimmer than most, but my father cannot use auto-brightness as he says it's always too dim for him indoors. Maybe your eyes are super-sensitive, or your screen is from the bright batch...

I must say though that I'm always the first to hit the light switches in my family. I don't see so well in low light.

If the auto brightness setting bothers you, then you simply change it by keeping auto brightness on. Your iPhone will remember this setting automatically the next time. It works really well.

Hasn't been the case in many instances for a while, but certainly seems to have been improved more recently. But various screen comparisons from not even that long ago still had the iPhone screens at the top or right around there from what I recall. So it's not like one is somehow completely surperior and the other one is severely outdated or something like that.

I think what he's saying is more along the lines that OLED has been up and coming for a while, and finally has surpassed LCD panels in a majority of areas, and only seems to be getting better. The areas that are amazing for OLED panels are the super dark black levels, the crazy saturation of colors, and the power saving possibilities over LCD. I say possibilities because it only really saves energy on screens that display a lot of dark and black content, which is not even close to what iOS is. However, unless Apple can get in on Samsung's supply of bleeding edge displays that they put in the S6, the older panels will neve be better than Samsung's new ones and the older panels are currently a bit grainy at low brightness levels. There is no way Apple will let Samsung say they have newer panel tech than Apple does, mainly because Samsung constrains supplies of those displays.

That's true bhayes and Samsung would be mad to give away their prized asset. It isn't me trying to be controversial though - the screens on the galaxy S6 and the Note 4 are simply better than their respective iDevices.
