So the orange idiot folded very quickly. Mo ‘reciprocal’ tariffs anymore, no tariffs on electronics and other components. All he obtained was to diminish the credibility of his administration and by extension the one of the us. Well done 👏🏻

Finally people are calling them what they are: "The Trump Tariffs". Everyone should remember who put these taxes on you.

And absolutely no company should thank Trump for taking them off for their own company's products. You can't claim praise for putting out a fire you started.

The man is an absolute ignoramus.

I give you credit for trying to make sense of things.

My observation is he speaks only to compliment himself or to get himself out of his current situation.
He doesn’t speak to inform because it’s all just made up or lies.
I saw an article (sorry that I can't recall or provide link to it) that presented Trump's behaviour as a method to become "king". The argument was that if everything is unstable, but he holds the keys, companies become willing servants to him in exchange for themselves being granted exemptions (stability), and in the process, he can become "ruler absolute" of the USA.

Definitely an interesting argument, and fits with the repeatedly rumoured "run for third term"/"no more elections" themed discussions.

The silver lining is it's doubtful he'll live long enough for this to matter. By the way, one plan he put forth on a third term is if Vance runs for president and makes Trump his VP, then Vance steps down once in office. Dumb of course.

It's frustrated me to no end that people aren't calling it the Trump Tax.
It's not a difficult concept. When you buy a widget and there's a state sales tax added, no one suggests that the manufacturer or the store pays the tax. But that's exactly what's being claimed by the administration, framing that's even picked up by media. I see headlines like "China facing huge tariffs" and I want to scream. The ones facing huge tariffs are the consumers of Chinese goods.

That $1M tcook "personal donation" to the "inaugural fund" most certainly had nothing at all to do with this or making this happen in anyway. Never.
I doubt it had anything to do with it.

If giving Trump $1m was in any way helpful, these exemptions would've been announced as the tariffs were announced on April 2nd, stopping hundreds of billions of dollars being wiped off the value of Apple in the first place.

If, on the other hand, you're right and the $1m is the reason Apple has these exemptions now, then you really do have to wonder why anyone would do business with Trump at all ever:

Cook: "Here's $1m for your inauguration fund, Donny."
Trumpet: "Thank you bigly."
...
Trumpet: "145% tariffs!"
Cook: "*****?! You just wiped $700bn off our value!"
Trumpet: "Oh, I guess you did give me $1m, here's an exemption."
Cook: "Bit late for that, don'tcha think?"

Yeah... that won't work.

One possibility, thinking outside the box...

Remember the Romanovs? They had a pretty good run over a 300 year period ruling Russia (until the end/revolution in 1917). Let's see... trump has three sons...

Xi Jinping must be utterly amused by this.
Trump starts a trade war, pours petrol on to the trade war and then has to buckle within days.

On the international front there’s only one super power coming out of this with any grace and sadly it’s not the democracy.
Chinas standing on the world front is increasing without doing anything.

Xi has been very busy lately making deals with a number of Indo Pacific countries. Since the US doesn't believe in the concept of allies anymore, they're up for grabs. When you see things as you against the world then it becomes the world against you.

He's quite mad, in cognitive decline, and does not have a grand plan. He is making stuff up as he goes. And guess what? He blinked, Xi did not, and we come out much weaker than before.

You all remember Smoot-Hawley, and that was 95 years ago.

This will go down as one of the biggest economic missteps in US history, and everyone will remember it was Trump who wiped $10 TRILLION off the markets in a week.

Few people remember Smoot-Hawley. It certainly isn't stressed in high-school history, if it is taught at all. A lot of people have been told about it recently, but they still don't understand it. But, yeah, this will go down in history... just not in the memory of the people who are rooting for their team to win the next popularity pageant election.
