Seeing as how scientists have failed to explain how a Wal-Mart with 200 employees working can only have 4 cashiers open, I welcome self check-outs whether through an app or their own system.
Made me laugh. I work as a cashier and that is the EXACT situation that is occurring in my store.
I do not think the Scan & Go would cause unemployment because there will always be human involvement in the transaction. It will probably, in the end, take just as long to get through it.
This is like the argument that allowing customers pump their own gas in Oregon will lead to unemployment.
Seriously? It seems like most gas stations have one employee. Can't really get lower then that. And yes, in my teens, I pumped gas. All by myself at a gas station. It sucked running around filling 6 cars at once. And the odd loser who knows the way to get good service is ask for "exactly $10" instead of a fill-up, so you have to babysit his car.
Back OT: every walmart I shop at has like 10 checkout lanes, and 3 of them are in service, and it takes forever to check out. I hate shopping there. I don't see employees standing around. Service service would be a blessing. It would allow one employee to monitor four checkout lines, sort of like what they do at homedepot.
Other people using them is the annoying part. I've said something like this multiple times, "S***, this old person has a bag of celery. Let's find a new line."
They need to offer classes to the elderly!!!
This article is a little Oprah for my taste, but it's a good reminder that in the not too distant future we'll be the ones fumbling around with either a new technology or the same technology and we're impared by age. And there will be an impatient young person behind us.
