haha pleaaaseeee.....

do we really have to make a chart showing everything the iphone has that NO other phone has?

anyone good at that type of stuff? we should make one so everytime a thread like this comes up just post that up :apple:

here ill start a few...

- A Real OS, with the easiest UI ever
-Real web browsing
-Touchscreen that is actually responsive and doesnt need to be aligned
-Easy to syncronize with Mac or PC
-over 10,000 apps that dominate apps on other phones
-THE best mp3 player in a phone, ever

to be continued....

yea, the iPhone is simply the best. I tried the Dare, Instinct, among others. Half the time I'm about to throw the thing at a wall due to crappy as heck touchscreens. The Instinct, which is being marketed as the iPhone killer (yes, it is "better" than the iPhone) and says it can copy and paste. Clearly the makes it the winner. Effing no. The iPhone has a 10k+ app store. hey Samsung, do you have one? ehh no.

I understand where you're coming from, but remember I made the thread for information on about which phone's may come close to iPhone features, and some of the features on the chart are what some people actually need/and would use, therefore somewhat lowering it's "value" among top phones.
BUT
let me contradict myself :p, I'm all for the iPhone, and do believe that it is one of the better phones out now but with a few software updates, and a few cosmetic changes (same shape design/but with an aluminum back, such as the first iPhone), I believe it would be the very best. :apple:

Not only is the chart old, it's also misleading.

You raise an excellent point by saying this chart is "old" and that actually helps illustrate a significant problem. All of those categories are features that the average cellphone user loves to use, but here we are, many moons later, and the iPhone is still missing those same features. :(

My point exactly...
Yaaaawwwwnnn. are those cobwebs on that chart? Is that all you got?

We need to have someone inform Apple about that chart right away. All of those feature should have been added months ago. Seems to me that this chart is still a living document, just like our Constitution.

I understand and see where both sides are coming from but I would like to state my 2 cents.

Given the fact the iPhone has been out for less than two years it is killing the competition, even though it is lacking several features that other phones have now. But if you give the iPhone or Apple the time all those features will be there.

Just imagine if apple had all the features possible in the first iPhone, they would not have as many sales as they do now. So like the iPod the iPhone will slowly get up to speed as far as the lacking features that way each year they will sell even more than the last. Each year Apple will add features, just enough so that most people will buy the new one and they can make more sales.

I am not saying it is wrong that they have the market figured out - I think it is smart and at the same time it frustrates me (only cause I always have to have the new one).

Apple starts with a great device with a killer OS - then adds features to get more sales.

Most other cell phone makers just load a phone with everything they can think of and the OS limits all the features and the OS is not nearly as refined.

I know right now I can never go back to a normal cell phone or even a windows or palm or symbian powered smart phone. but not because the Features aren't there it is because I can't hassle with the watered down OS.

Once you go Mac you never go back!

Agreed! I think Android is going to be an awesome OS and when HTC puts it a better phone it will really take off. Which makes us, the consumers, the winners as everyone will make better products.

openmoko....android is just dumb IMHO it’s a lame ass Java platform running atop of Linux.

Are you talking worldwide or just the US ?

Well it has been out less than 2 years and that includes the world. But as far as outside the US I have no idea what other phones there are.

Either way you are missing my point.

iPhone is the hands down winner for me, but as a runner up I do like the idea of the Nokia N810 WiMAX edition.

It might be a more viable smartphone once the WiMAX service goes nationwide.

Given the fact the iPhone has been out for less than two years it is killing the competition, ...

It's apparently killing RAZR sales. Everyone else's sales are up, though obviously the iPhone is taking a share.

Look at the original HTC Touch. With almost zero advertising, it sold three million units during the time that the iPhone sold about five million. HTC hasn't been killed by Apple. Quite the opposite. Apple has helped made HTC a well known name by letting HTC have entire markets to themselves.

Just imagine if apple had all the features possible in the first iPhone, they would not have as many sales as they do now.

Sorry, but that's just silly. If it had the features that its competition had, then it would have had lots more sales. Heck, if it had had a CDMA version, Apple could've doubled their sales by now.

Apple starts with a great device with a killer OS - then adds features to get more sales.

You meant killer UI. The underlying OS, especially when it's totally underused as in this case, is pretty meaningless.

Most other cell phone makers just load a phone with everything they can think of and the OS limits all the features and the OS is not nearly as refined.

Again, you meant UI. Then I would agree.

Excellent post, as always. I love my iPhone, but like you say, it's just not true that the iPhone is killing the competition. You're right, HTC is likely killing Apple in sales right now. And Nokia, they're killing everyone. Having one single phone beating the rest of the competition means nothing for a corporation's survival (only means something for the media). For them, it's the total profit - in this case, total number of cellphone units sold, that is the most important number.

And I still don't buy the logic of not including features in order to sell more phones later. What ever happened to Apple and their desire to innovate? As for the iPhone, I see a beautiful phone that works very seemlessly, but I'm not quite seeing much innovation (beside multi-touch, of course). I have seen innovation in the apps though, but I don't think Apple should be relying on others for innovation.

I'm sure HTC didn't hold back on features at first; they're leading the charge in terms of innovation, along with Nokia. You may say that they're clunky and don't work as well, but at least they're innovative. You may also say that Apple just doesn't want to put out half-baked products, but look at Safari pre-2.2. That was just as clunky and crashed all the time.

The way I feel about "iPhone killer" phones is that they're all going to be sub-par. I think all these companies are jumping on the "let's try to make an iPhone-like phone" bandwagon and it's not what they should be doing. Blackberries are amazing phones, but the Blackberry Storm I feel should be called "sub-par" at best. It's lackluster, and doesn't have much originality. Instead, I think these companies should be focusing on making phones that are original. I mean, come on, let's face it; whether the concept of a touch screen phone is original or not (it isn't), the iPhone was a very original phone, in many many ways. Now, I think it's time for other companies to innovate. They have great minds, great resources, I feel they can do it.

I think the answer to this thread is: all phones, and no phones. I think for a lot of people, the iPhone is a great choice. It really is a great phone. It's not perfect, though, and there are lots of phones that do things better. I am going to put the iPhone as the only phone that competes with the iPhone for this reason. For that person that really needs to hack their phone to be able to do god-knows-what to each node of their 1,000-computer Linux server farm wherever they are, I'm sure they can find a phone that will allow that.

I like the Iphone and was planning on buying one as soon as the 3Gs came out. Then I got a look at AT&T's plans. I would be paying over 20% more for 100 less minutes and much shorter nights. I just couldn't do it. This thread is of interest to me and probably others who love the iphone but can't swing the plans. I'm coming from a Palm OS Treo/Sprint. I'd love something slightly better, equal to, or even almost as good as an iphone - as long as it's not on that exorbitant AT&T plan.

ok i managed to build some bigger table
maybe this will lighten you up.

These tables are funny, they remind me of the instinct videos. They all find the few things that the iPhone doesn't have and the others do and highlight those. When you look at specefic details your going to find that every phone is a little different and some phones have things others don't. What wins me over for the iPhone can't be found on any chart and thats how intuitively and seamlessly everything works on the iPhone. Now with over 10,000 apps you could probably make a very very long list of what the iPhone can do that other can't. If the iPhone isn't right for you simply don't buy it, for me even with less functionality I would still prefer the iPhone over any of the iPhone copies out there. Well evryone know's the saying "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery" with other phones like this popping up all the time (N95, Blackberry touch, etc.) Steve Jobs must be very proud.

One of the interesting things among the competitors is, if the phone works on Verizon, it becomes an instant hit on whoever travels the DC metro. Verizon has a contract with DC metro and all verizon phones work in the tunnels, on the metro, etc. However, anyone with an iPhone can use only iPod functions and off-network apps when riding the metro.

It becomes hard for me to talk my friends into iPhones because they have a good argument against me. Especially when someone travels the metro 2 hours out of the day...

I see your point. The Sprint plans are very cheap and hard to turn down. However, I did. I just felt I was at a point in my life (financially) where I just felt like treating myself and all the other phones on Sprint were crappy (with the possible exception of the htc touch pro). So, only change if you can afford it, but yes, Sprint plans are much more affordable and the Sprint network is excellent.

wow i waste 2 minutes making up this table. maybe i could get a marketing job at sprint instead

That's what the table is about.

The first sentence is typical of a fanboy. I say, come on.. How do you copy and paste text on your iPhone? I tell you why you don't do this. Because you cant do this intuitively and seamlessly if you not own a paper and a pen on the right moment.
Also because virtually all application is limited to a set of apple's frameworks, another bunch are restricted by apple policies, and others never pass the review stage you are restricted to utilities or games that can curl the web and store media for own's application crunch.

I think that i'm a avareage consumer who read the Apple's iPhone Tech Specs page and understands that iphone had a bluetooth 2.0 + edr chip that implies, or should imply that iphone support wireless file transfer. However iphone must be special in this area.

I don't believe in copies. Samsung Omnia and N95 are the phones in the table. LG PRADA had the multitouch debut before iphone. Samsung Omnia is a windows mobile. N95 is a symbian. Nothing to do with iphone!

I can sense fanboys in a 300,000km radius!
