I purchased my :apple: iPhone on Friday at the local AT&T shop, a week 44, and it's perfect. Ran the test from appleservedup and it looks great and ZERO stuck pixels. No wonder there is some much FUD about the iPhone. The other cell builders and left-out phone carriers are frightened. The iPhone is the most incredible tech toy I have ever purchased. Oh, I have boxes of kit to toss when the local sanitary district has their next free electronics recycling day. One item in the recycle pile that shows my enthusiasm for tech toys is the original mp3 player, a Diamond Rio 300 64mb.

Well, this whole nightmare is finally over. Apple agreed to refund my money, so i'm happy. Apple Customer Service = the best through this whole ordeal.

I changed one of the tests on AppleServedUp to reflect what my limited testing using iPhones at my local Apple stores revealed. The gradient was clearly visible into the green on the best iPhones. Yet some iPhones wouldn't display a gradient even into the orange, while others were barley visible at all. My current iPhone has gray visible all the way to the actual black. If anyone wants to post or email me a picture of their screen displaying the gradient test at full brightness, I'd appreciate it.

You can send images to gradienttest at appleservedup dot com.

I have a 7 series LCD with the negative black issue. It's horrible, especially when trying to watch videos with dark colors. Is this negative black issue exclusive to the 7 series LCD or are the 5 series having problems too?

I'm going to try to get my iPhone replaced... As far as the iPhones being sold now, are they primarily 7 series, 5 series, or a mix?

my phone is a 7 series and does not have any issues

I have been following these threads closely as I have gone through several phones myself. My first phone was a 5 series which had a dead slider issue. It was replaced with several bad 7455232 phones until I finally received a 7459072 screen which I am happy with. My questions are : Does anyone know why these panels are so different? A lot of people say that the 7455232 is cheaper and in the cheaper $399 phone. If that is the case then did anyone receive a 7455232 before the price drop? And why are there still 5 series and 7459072 screen being produced?

Nobody has any information about the specific differences between the screens? I'd like to know anything about who manufactured the screens.

Crap! I bought my iPhone almost a month ago. I just started paying attention to the screen and noticed this problem while watching a movie with lots of blacks...

Anyway, when I take it back to the Apple store next week after I get back from vacation, considering it is well after the 14 day return, will Apple take care of it on the spot and give me a new phone or will they just call it "warranty service" and take my phone in for "repair"?

3rd Iphone Lucky...

I queued up on the 9th and was delighted with my new toy (no negative black issues) until I had some intermittent problems with EDGE ("PDP authentication failed/EDGE connection failed" - resulting in safari crash) So I took it back to o2 who were very helpful and replaced it with a new one.

The new one however had negative black issues (week 42 I think) and some other hardware problems.

So I took it back again and o2 replaced with a new one despite being out of the 14 day remorse period.

3rd phone is going strong (touch wood). It's a week 43 and the screen is a 7 series.

One thing I noticed about the good (1st and 2nd) screens:
there appears to be small semi circular areas of light or halos on the top and bottom edge especially above the home key.

Looks as though the screen housing is applying pressure in these areas or the back lighting is seeping through.

Not something which bothers me and I doubt any one else, but might shed some light on what causes the differences in screen quality (excuse the pun)

You have 28 days to return anything from O2 and get a new iPhone back.

The 14 days is only to cancel the contract.

I actually see that on my good screen and not on the bad screen - how strange...

Maybe its not from pressure or light seeping through - maybe its simply visible because the screen
shows the colours more acurately?

Any updates on the negative blacks issue? I was about to order a phone as a holiday gift for my mother, but don't really want to give her one with negative blacks like mine.

Thanks.

I was wondering - what week is the iPhone on here in the US? My friend is getting one with the money he's getting for Christmas from his and his Wife's family the last week of this month...

Sorry, don't mean to bump - my friend's getting his Christmas mola early and is getting it this week.

Anything?

Also, I'm having trouble looking for the cheat-sheets on how to use the emergency mode to enable Wi-Fi to check that website for negative blacks so we can do it before we leave the Apple Store - any links would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

You really don't need to do all that. Open the phone, leave the sleep button pressed for about 3 seconds until the 'slide to shut down' message appears, and youll either see a dark circle, or a dim image of the globe. If you see a black circle, you know there's a problem.

Great, thanks! He just text'd me that he wants to go tomorrow after work...

He actually got it today. I was praying that we'd get a good screen - may look strange being with him and opening up to check - I told him to go to the AT&T store to get an earlier model:

Week: 42
OTB Firmware: 1.1.1
Screen: 7459072

Screen as per appleservedup.com is perfect!

This thing was tons easier to unlock than my much older 1.0.2!!

Anyone with a bad screen needs to keep trying until they get a good one!

Well I've been stuck with a bad screen a while now.

However, I'm still too good to Apple. I'm about to order another as a gift.

Hope I'm luckier with this one.

Great to hear your friend got a good screen! 7459072 screens are pretty rare, I think.

Try the AT&T stores... maybe they have a better batch...

The way I see it, their Chinese manufacturer, after the iPod Touch fiasco, "spread out" the bad screens during manufacturing with the iPhone in the hopes that no one would notice...

Looks Great
slight negative issue
No Dots

I don't have a real bad negative issue that some have posted. But when I tilt the phone at a slight angle to the right or upwards JayZ looks better. But it's definitely viewable when viewed directly, so no biggie.

Yesterday I compared my phone with 7 phones in the Apple store for about 2 hours. I'm a nut when it comes to perfection. Anyway, the JayZ photo is more clear on the 5 Series and the whites appear whiter/bluer.
The 7 Series phones whites looked greyer/more yellow.

At first I thought the 5 Series was best. But then I started to like the 7 series better. The 5 Series Displayed photos slightly brighter. But the 7 Series displayed everything else a bit crisper, while the 5 Series appeared a bit washed out/hazy.

One of the Apple guys who helps me out whenever I go there was pissed when I showed him the difference in the screens (He has a 7 and it's bad)

I thinking I may hang on to my 7 Series since the negative black isnt all bad, I have no dead pixels, and no freeze-ups.

However, I do hate that some vids are harder to see during black scenes while the 5 Series are OK.

I think if I go into the Apple store again the Apple people will think I'm a psycho..............ooops to late ;-)

my iPhone is perfect the screen no dead pixels attal its amazing woooo week 43 its flawless :D yay

I picked up a week 41, 1.1.1 iPhone in the US. No dead pixels, but suffered from the 'negative' issue. However, I installed 1.1.2 and the problem was fixed! Woohoo!

Well I have 3 iphones I bought to unlock and sell, and one has the negative black screen issue, 2 don't, but one of the ones who don't have a very yellowish tone. I must say the one with negative black screen issue has better color quality and videos seem to have more depth. The ones without the issue look very pixelated and cheap.
