Agreed. Plus this isn't just being fussy about a minor issue. The negative black problem is a true defect. It makes some movies, with many dark scenes, nearly unwatchable and also makes dark nighttime photos terrible to view. I wouldn't have believed it until I saw it for myself when I loaded up Slither.

I hope that fixed displays start showing up soon, as I'm very happy with my phone otherwise and I'd just like to move on.

Can I only return my phone for a new one inside the 14 day window? If the fix doesn't show up until after the 14 days will I have to send it out for repair?

I would hate to say it but it seems as though the 5 series screens are not suffering this issue as much as the 7 series. Although there are many more 7 series out there than 5's.

We should be keeping track of this as well. Any way to add a poll to this thread?

No, but it seems that the 7's are more prevalent starting around week 30. The cheaper iPod Touch type of screen perhaps?

Interestingly they changed the iPhone's pixel density from 160 dpi to 163 dpi (same as touch) around the time the touch was in stores.

I have a week 24 production refurb iphone that I just got in yesterday and activated today (purchased from Apple.com). I Noticed that I had to tilt my screen to watch the Jap-Anime section of KILL BILL to see it. It wasn't a big deal, but bugs me because I know I should be able to view it correctly face-on. Downloaded the JAY-Z picture (thanks for this) and BAM'ed looked like Segul Poo! There's apple stores all over so first thing after work, I'm heading in. An apple product is an apple product whether ordered from Apple.com or an Apple Store. I'm pretty sure they still take care of you at the apple store if you ordered through apple.com. I'll let you'll know my results tonight.

mine seems ok... 5 series screen in case anyone's keeping track.

Mine looks fine too and it is a 7 series screen.

EDIT: just looked up the serial no. It is week 29 (7U729******).

Week 24 should be okay, but I'm wondering if your screen was replaced since yours is a refurb and they used one of the cheap screens. What's your screen number?

I recently exchanged my original iPhone because of dead pixels at the apple store and received a faulty week 36 iphone with the series 7 display.

I'm going to try sending the phone in for repair, hopefully i get different results. Hopefully their replacement screens dont have the issue. Has anyone received a phone from apple repair with the issue?

Good observation. I just checked it and it's a 7 series LCD... Yeap yeap. BAD screen most definitely. =(

I have a week 32 iPhone (7R732******), I got it 3 days ago, and I first noticed the problem when watching a movie with some dark scenes (the beginning of Donnie Darko if you've seen it)

I heard about the negative black issue, but when I looked into it I found out its exactly what my iPhone had...

My dilemma -

I don't have the money to get at&t service yet, so I used the iPhone Tool to bypass activation. It works just like an iPod touch now.

Now, If I were to restore it and bring it into the Apple store, how would I show the problem? Can I bring it in with bypassed activation, and they will still give me service? (does bypassing activation void the warranty?)

Also, there is one stuck pixel that doesn't really bother me too much, but it just adds on to the problem with the negative black...

Cant say with 100% certainty, but I wouldnt think by-passing activation would be any issue at all. Who's to say you didnt have it activated through ATT then cancelled your service?

Ive got an appointment at the genius bar tomorrow night, will let you all know what they say and the resolution to the problem.

I went into the Apple store earlier tonight for my Genius bar appointment and the guy looked at the iPhone and compared it to his own... he did acknowledge the problem and I got a replacement. (from what I could tell, he seemed to be aware of the problem with iPod Touches, but this was the first time he'd seen it on an iPhone)

This new one is MUCH better. It does have the little white dots some people reported, but they're so faint you don't even notice them and I don't consider it a problem at all. So, I'm very pleased with my replacement.

This one is a week 34 unit with the 7455232 LCD panel.

Im hoping I get a replacement as well. But since I have a 4gb Im guessing they wont have any on hand so it will have to be sent in :(

BTW, what did he use as a comparison? Meaning did he look at a picture on his and yours, a video, did he use some kind of gradiant color scale?

I had my phone replaced this week, and the one I got back has this problem. It's a week 36. Not only does it have the negative blacks, it also has a load of dead pixels.

At least they are giving me a free loaner...

I went to my local Apple Store (Boulder, Colorado) and checked out 5 or 6 iPhones. Mine is a 7 series screen and exhibits the "negative" blacks. At the store, only 1 of the phones I checked had the same problem. The others looked fine. Of the ones that looked good, half were series 5 and the other were series 7.

I think that only series 7 screens exhibit this problem, but not all series 7 screens.

Weeks 36 & 37 are when the Touches came out bad...

I don't know when they start with the next batch of iPhones but, like the Touch, week 38 onward should be okay again...

I had that Jay-Z album cover image loaded up in Safari, so he typed in the same URL on his iPhone to compare it. It didn't take him long to decide mine was faulty - I was kind of surprised that I didn't have to do more to convince him there was a real problem actually.

Probably because of all the Touches being returned...

I just got a replacement (another refurb model) and it's triple bad. Same negative LCD, deadpixels and even weird black dots on anything black. I so glad I have multiple apple stores to go to. The almost didn't give me a new phone because they said it wasn't that big of a deal to have an lcd screen with displaying negatively... idiots I tell ya. The manager told me that I could only exchange once... pssha... I'm exchanging until I'm satisfied or APPLE will hear from me with many many phone calls and emails. or I can just return it completely and get a ZUNE. The current model I have is a Week 27 with a 7 series LCD. Another try tomorrow morning. :(
