Wow... I'm kinda bummed. I noticed the issue while watching Pirates of the Carribean on my iPhone a few days ago. I didn't think much of it; I thought it was normal. But seeing some of the pics of those of you with perfect screens, I definitely realize mine is defective. I guess I'll have to make an appointment at my local Genuis Bar....:(

Issues

Yea, mine is a 7 series screen, week 35, same issue!!!!

it sucks. so when outside the 14 day return period, can i go to an apple store and get a new one...BRAND NEW. or a refurb, or do i have to send it back to apple. Also I heard that the iphones where the serial numbers start with "3" are the refurb units. is this true?

If that's the case, then the iPhone they gave me as a replacement is a refurb... because my serial number starts with 3. I'm fine with that though since everything works fine.

Hapry007, when and where did you get your phone?
I got a friend from NYC to send one over to the UK. He got it from the 5th Av store. All these issues are really stressing us UK people, as we cannot return anything. My friend got it on the 19th of sept, evening. Chances are im getting a problematic one aswell :(

I bought an iphone for my wife 5 days ago from the online apple store for her birthday present this coming month. I decided to give it to her early and she opened it yesterday. I spent the better part of the night trying to figure out how to upload songs to the phone. Then I found this message board with people who have display problems. I decided to check mine and it turns out that mine has the same problem too. The iphone is a week 34 4gb model with the 7 screen. I took this from a front view of the iphone with the brightness turned up all the way and it shows the negative black along with the checkered dots pattern. I think I might also have some hot pixels.

Problems with weeks 30-36. Take it back and look at the serial number at the store.

The store I got my 4Gig one from had all old ones from the original run. Screens are perfect.

Just found out that the #number of the phone in transit is 7R737 ... Lets hope 37 is not affected with this issue.

How about the 8gb version of the iphone? Do you know which weeks are affected? I'm thinking to switching to the 8gb because I tried to put all the songs from my hard drive and it amounted to more than 4 gb.

edit: maybe the first question I should have asked if it's even possible that the apple store will allow me to upgrade from the 4gb model to the 8 gb?

Seems like I definitely have the issue. Check out these pics comparing my Macbook monitor with my iPhone. Sorry about the crappy flashless photography work...

so.... anyone with an unlocked iphone with the negative blacks problem try to get it replaced by apple yet?

Just got back from the apple store, no replacement. Guy was cool, he acknowledged there was a problem, my screen was pretty fubar. But he said two things, apple hasnt released any procedure for this, so he really cant do much, and all the ones he can give me as a replacement are weeks 32-37 so i might still have the problem. He gave me his card and said to call back in a week, good luck guys.

That's exactly what I was about to ask (whether or not Apple will replace them right now). Thanks for doing the dirty work for me. :p Luckily I'm not traveling anywhere (and therefore watching movies on the iPhone) anytime soon, so it's not a big deal if I have to wait awhile.

I'm going to be going down to Buffalo to get an iPhone on Thursday, I'm going to be unlocking it so is there any way to check if the screen will have issues before opening the box?

Is the serial number on the box so I can check if the fourth and fifth digits are below 30 or above 37?

Was stuck at the Apple store for a few hours today with my brother. His was a week 30 but he had the problem and it was bad. Luckily he was within the 2 weeks of purchase. Finally after getting no where with one of the "genius'", we went and talked to the manager and finally got it worked out and exchanged for a week 38.

Mine is a week 29, with a 5 screen and is perfect. His 38 has a 7 screen looks good, but still not as good as mine.

Anyways, goodluck to all who have to go through this, its such a pain cause its not a well known problem yet.

Just got home from the Apple store. I showed the genius the JayZ picture. He punched up the URL on his phone (heavily modded phone I might say) and compared. He ordered up a replacement just that quick.

Its a week 34, 7 series. No dead pixels either. (had 1 on my other one)

Last test that needs to be passed is to see if it will charge all the way. I had an 8gb that I returned because it wouldnt charge the last 5% or so.

My youtube isnt working at the moment. Hoping thats a problem on their end and not something wrong with the phone. Saw someone else say they are having problems with it today so *fingers crossed* it will be working soon.

So you got a week 34 with no negative black problem correct?

Well Im happy to report everything is in perfect working order:

- no dead pixels
- no negative black screen issue
- battery fully charges
- and youtube is working now

Thanks :apple: genius.

BTW, if you have the negative issue, load up that JayZ album cover in your browser, jack up the brightness, and take it in for them to compare to their own phone. There is NO WAY they can deny that its not a problem.
