Any backups?

The files are still in the library. iPhoto library manager app shows all the files, albums, events,.etc. iPhoto just indicates it is incompatible and will not open. At a loss as how to proceed. There are no backups. The sad part is that I was shopping for ext drives on black Friday to move all the pics off the iMac. Just a little too late.

It just is very strange because it worked after install just not after machine restart.

two things
1. have you looked inside the package to see if the photos are still there. When this happened to me I looked and all the originals were still there

2. have you installed the update. I tried again with the update installed and everything sorted out. I have read of many folks that did the same on a botched library and it came out fine

The files are all in the library. When I look in side the "package", all the indexes, files, masters, etc. are there. I just need to be able to open iPhoto in order to start a new library and copy all this files manually. It won't even open

Here is what you do.

First, make a dupe of the library file and put it anywhere but the pictures folder, just in case.

Second, install the software update.

Open iPhoto after update is complete. It will likely try to update your library again. Let it. Hopefully that will work.

If not. Quit iPhoto. Dump the whole library file. Go back to that dupe and open up the package. Find the originals folder and drag it out of the package ( you may have to dupe that folder to do it). Dump the library file

Open iPhoto with a fresh library file, drag in your originals and make any needed adjustments.

Time consuming but not particularly hard.
