I want to hear about Garageband, so anyone who may (for whatever reason) have access to the app can you tell me if performance has improved over version 1.1 please! I'm wondering about ordering iLife 05 but I want to know it has what I want - speed man - speed!
You might want to start a new thread, or do a search for one that's already out there. ;)

Red Eye

Red eye has been my main reason for not using iPhoto more in my workflow. I find the best results when using a paintbrush to selectively apply redeye reduction. Is this available in the new iPhoto? If not, how effective is the included method? Also, I use the "clone" and "airbrush" tools alot; are these in the new iPhoto?

word on the street is that iWork is also floating around in the deep dark corners of the internet.

apple employees have been able to download demo copies internally since the MWSF announcement. Its not hard to believe one of these has made it into the wild...

Previous versions you had to draw a marquee around the area, and press the red-eye. The new version, you press red-eye and then you select the center of each eye that needs reduction. So far, in my tests, it has worked well. You don't get control over how dark it goes, but I believe there is some algorithm that iPhoto uses to determine the level and extent of the reduction.

You wont find any clone or airbrush tools in this version. The only new feature is the Adjustments dashboard, which allows greater control of the image as a whole. The best features are cool/warm, sharpening, and exposure adjustment. I'd still recommend Photoshop for the heavy lifting. iPhoto is really geared towards people who are afraid of using PS, or don't have the time to learn it.

well it took 5 versions but...

apple finally got it right.

I switched all my photos from there nicely organized folders and put them into iphoto. Its all about the hierarchal folders. that was the feature I most wanted. Also the calendar view is ingenius.

on a 2 1/2 year old ibook it works as expected. Not speedy but neither is safari for me... a lot better than previous versions thats for sure

What iBook are you running on??? My iBook G4 800mhz is very sluggish with iPhoto 4, even with only 2500 or so images (4 mpixels or greater). I end up archiving all but the most current photos. I dream of the day when I can have all my 20,000 or so photos in one album. I guess that's the day I get myself a dual 3.0 ghz Power Mac.

Anyone try processing RAW in iPhoto yet? I am excited about being able to keep most of my everyday photographic workflow in iPhoto. I purchased iLife and iPhoto the day they were announced and can't wait to receive them in the mail. In the meantime, I'd love to hear more from those who already have a copy.

RAW support is fairly cruddy - much slower than JPGs, and it doesn't support the RAW photos produced by my FinePix E550. Bah!

Other than that, a *massive* improvement - very nippy on my 1ghz 12" PB with 768MB RAM. New adjustments etc are fantastic, faster than messing with stuff in PS, that's for sure. Great to see the search, calendar & keywords stuff as they really do their thing, and do it well. The albums/folders thing is a but confusing, it took me a while to get nested albums working properly, but easy when you know how. Would like to have been able to create subfolders of Smart Albums etc, instead of creating a folder and then creating smart albums from within it.

Anybody want screenshots, just ask...

Only gripe is the RAW support, pretty gutted about that but have submitted it as a feature request.

yea the raw support is alot slower than jpeg but at least it works....

I'll take you up on your offer if you don't mind - my copy won't be here until the 29th (Canada) and I'm dying for iPhoto 5.
I'm curious about:
- new edit dashboard floater
- have they changed the Keyword system? It's my biggest gripe with 4, and adding the searchbar was a HUGE step
- some examples of the book themes
- Making a slideshow

And anything else that's caught your eye.
Take this is a way to clear your conscience for... getting iPhoto so soon, shall we say, lol.
No but anyways, that'd be great!

The searchbar is a huge step and it works great except for the odd time i get pictures in my search results that have no keywords even close to the keyword i searched for but whatever...

They made it a bit annoying to add new keywords to the list...you have to go in through iphoto prefs to add or change keywords. Assigning keywords to photos is nicer, you get checkboxes for the keywords you want to apply...one annoying think I've found in both iphoto 4 and 5 is that there is no way to sort the keywords. It's quite frustrating to have to search through a randomly sorted list of keywords when you have tons of them. Anyone know of any 3rd party apps to sort keywords?

just got an email from apple saying my iLife order has shipped via fedex 2-day. so, i should get it by friday? wishful thinking...at least by saturday (does fedex ship on saturdays?)

looking forward to iphoto, which is the only i-app i really use (not counting itunes). don't have a vid cam yet so don't do imovie or idvd or garageband...but i'm looking forward to some fast rendering on my PM G5 2.0.

Do you mean you still can't reorder the keywords? I hated that in 4 too - it would be much easier if I could group all of my say, "People" keywords together at the top, or all of my "Holiday" ones below it, etc. Actually - there's an idea for iPhoto 6! Keyword groups! ... Too bad it'll be a year before they add it.
Oh, and btw - for your searches with the random pictures, do you by chance have any of those words in the title/comments?

Yeah, that is what I mean unfortunately. OH wait you can reorder them in the preferences but only manually and you can't group them

Yeah, all them bastards 'pirating' free software.. bound to force up the price

Nah, it makes sense if you think about it. Massive piracy of iLife 04 at $49 is a possible reason for iLive 05 being more.

Don't agree personally - I reckon Apple wanted to have it at $99 all along, but staggered it to make it more acceptable. It'll reach $99 next year, just wait and see. :(

I would tend to think the opposite. Higher prices increases piracy. The lower the price, the more affordable it becomes to the user to buy and not worry with a guilty conscience.

Another quick question - can iPhoto 5 now choose to "Import Some" instead of ALL the photos on my digital camera when I plug it in?

The alternative train of thought is 'if so many people pirate it when it's cheap, we may as well increase the price by 30%, expecting that less than 30% of the previous buyers will drop out'. It seems like a tactic a large company like Apple could pull off, especially with staple software like iLife.

heres a picture of iPhoto5. yes, it is much faster than previous versions.

this a pic of the new Adjustments pane.... very dashboard-like

mods, if this isnt allowed, feel free to take it down... I dont want Apple Legal on me for posting a picture of an already-released (for some) product :)

you people are all crazy

I picked up my copy from fedex today. The new GUI is a nice improvement, and the speed is bumped up a bit. I have noticed some weird graphical glitches, and I can't find a way to get 'right click->edit in external editor' to work. I have done this in previous versions and I know how the preferences are supposed to work, but no matter what I do it stays grayed out. Has anyone got this to work?
