Guys, I would download the MyPublisher (mypublisher.com) iPhoto plugin. They seem to have better reviews of quality than Apple. All you do is, pick a template/etc in iPhoto, but when you hit "Buy Book", it takes you to their website to buy it. They print it themself, and it comes out with the same theme/etc as you would get from Apple. I just ordered a book from them with my photography in it. I'll be sure to post some pictures when it comes in a few days along with a full review.:)

Could somebody who has an iPhoto book take a few pictures of it and make those into an iPhoto book and send it to us so we can see what iPhoto books look like?

:p :D

Just to throw another opinion into the pot...

I've had iPhoto books made with a couple of versions of iPhoto and they've all been excellent. They may not be as good quality as a good photo print but they're easily as good as the photos you would see in most travel books/guides. Everyone I've shown them too has been very impressed.

The last one I had made was a burgundy covered, hard back "This Is Your Life" book for my Mom's 60th birthday last week. I don't think she's put it down since! She adores it. As most of the pics were old (REAAAL old) I had to scan them from the originals and even the scans turned out really good in most cases.

I also had one made by Snapfish online as I had a voucher for a free one and it's nice but not as nice as Apple's books and you also have much less control over the layout.

I want to try the softcover books next time and maybe a medium sized book too.

I can't recommend them enough. :)

Sorry! I forgot to come back to the thread.

My book was gorgeous, it turned out great.

One thing though, I wouldnt use this service for all macros. When you get really up close, the images may come out a tiny bit pixel'y.

Other than that, it was awesome.

Hope you guys like your books!

Boy I'd love to see photos of this book that would go with this "review". :)

I used an old version of iPhoto to make some books for my brothers a few years ago. They were double-sided hardback. Lots of old pics from when they were kids. They loved them.

I also have bought some smaller books for short vacations and trips and such.

great every time.

One point the OP touched on: has anyone experience with iLife '05 AND '06 books, and is there any difference in quality?

I'd like to know as well. I've skipped the '06 update and am going to go straight to '07 when Leopard ships.

Also, has anyone gotten both the Apple book and MyPublisher one? I'd just like to know, based on experience and not hearsay, which one is actually of higher quality?

I'd really like to get a book of our honeymoon for my wife.

So just to confirm, if I have iPhoto '06, I don't need to use a hack or anything to make it top quality? It's already set to the highest setting right?

I'd like too know as well.

Edit: Well I just tried the hack, and no it's not changed in '06... I went ahead and changed it. Hope that helps.

From the quoted hack above:

If you open up the preferences file for iPhoto (~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iPhoto.plist), you will find 3 settings called:

• BookTargetImageDPI
• BookTargetMediumImageDPI
• BookTargetSmallImageDPI

The default values are 150, 150 and 300 respectively, and they are used for the three different book sizes that can be ordered from iPhoto.

Note: iPhoto 5.01 or below only has the BookTargetImageDPI entry.

If you have iPhoto 5.02 or above, the plist file is in binary format - you can use Pref Setter to change these values. iPhoto 5.01 or below uses text format, so any text editor will do.

Changing the value to 300 forces iPhoto to use 300 DPIs for your photo books.* Next time you order an iPhoto book, the pictures will look as you would expect them to look.

I opened the prefs on my machine with factory-installed iLife '06 and found these all set to 300 as you can see in the screenshot below (the names have changed slightly from the link above).

It would suggest that this problem has already been sorted out.

Edit: Viewtiful Rich has just said his were the old values. I definitely have not changed mine before today as I only just downloaded Prefsetter. Umm...

apple logo on iphoto book

Hello,
Ive heard that the made on a mac logo appears on the inside cover of softcover books, but does it appear on the inside cover of the hardcover books as well?
If so, has anyone tried the workaround removing the the logos from the iphoto resoucees folder and had any luck removing it from the finished product?

It does appear on the hardback books as well, but I haven't tried getting around it.

I make my girlfriend an album every year of all our photos of the past year as keep-sakes and memories as we carry on, I even make her keep the white box with the Apple logo on that it came in!

DPI settings and book quality in iPhoto 08

Can anyone with iPhoto 08 have a look in the prefs file and see what the DPI setting is?
Also, has anyone already ordered a book through iPhoto 08 and leave a review of the quality?

Jacob

My first post here.

I just upgraded to iPhoto 8.0 and made my first book purchase and was a little disappointed with the quality. Then I found this thread and checked my prefs files and discovered that apart from BookTargetSmallImageDPI, all the others had a default value of 150 DPI. (which I have now changed)

I am presuming that when I upgraded to v.8 it took the previous iPhoto settings. iPhoto is a great piece of software and I shall try ordering another book soon and will post back with my quality comparison at 300 DPI.

My main reason for disappointment was that unlike the preview, the printed book was a Matt-like finish and any typed words looked like it has been printed on an inexpensive inkjet from a few years back.

Great, thanks for your comment - I found the same after upgrading to iPhoto '08 and have edited the plist file noe.

when making the book, go into settings and deselect "include apple logo".

i have iphoto 08 upgraded from 05 and i have the following in the plist:

BookTargetDPI 300
BookTargetImageDPI 150
BookTargetMediumDPI 300
BookTargetMedumImageDPI 150
BookTargetSmallDPI 300
BookTargetSmallImageDPI 300
BookThumbSize 111

what shall i do? change all those not at 300 to 300 including BookThumbSize?

or do the ones without the word image in them effectively replace the image (ie BookTargetDPI at 300 replaces BookTargetImageDPI at 150)?
