I have iPhoto 08 upgraded from iPhoto 06 and my prefs are as follows:

BookTargetDPI 300
BookTargetMediumDPI 300
BookTargetSmallDPI 300

I don't have any of the "image" values (ie, BookTargetImage...)

Do I need to change anything then?

Bit confused....

Thanks

Same here, upgraded form '06 to '08 and all the settings are on 300. It says on the hack-website that iPhoto 5.01 or below only has the BookTargetImageDPI entry so don't worry about that.
I ordered a book yesterday (large softcover), I'll let you know what i think about it when i get it.

excellent - i'd be interested to know your thoughts..

can anyone offer input comparing these iphoto books to other alternatives (kinkos, shutterfly, snapfish, winkflash etc). On the website the iphoto books look incredible but I wonder if they are actually noticably higher in quality than the less expensive competition (winkflash has a 100page book for 20 bucks right now with a coupon code). either way using iphoto for the layout certainly is a plus...

iPhoto 8 Printed Book Resolution

Yeah, change the apple.iPhoto.plist file first. Supposedly it makes a huge difference, but when I bought my MB and changed the iPhoto settings again for my new laptop, I found the quality level to be higher than before.

And increasing it beyond 300 dpi doesn't make a difference in quality. Others on the net have tried.

Hey Abstract, I've been looking for more recent info on iphoto books from the newer version (v8) of iphoto to try to change the resolution so that I would end up with better printing results from apple. Any current thoughts? THX

The latest version of iPhoto is 7.1.5. The information you quoted is for a previous version of iPhoto 5 or 6 perhaps.

With iPhoto 6 + and now 7.1.5 apple implemeted the higher DPI and removed it from the plist where it was originally stored. See the bottom of this hint

Just check you have the lastest version by running software update and you will be fine.

iPhoto book share or transfer to Macbook

Like others I am finding the Book function on iPhoto fantastic and so easy - except for one thing I'd like some assistance with if anyone has done it. That is - how can I transfer an incomplete book from my iMac to my Macbook so I can work on it and refine it while not at home with my iMac?

Hello everyone. I'm sorry if someone already asked this but is there a way to order a iphoto book to a non listed country? I just finished a book to offer for christmas and "bam" can't order it because my country is not listed.. :(

Hi

I have just purchased a Mac and ordered four photo books using iphoto. I was impressed with the service, and the quality of the books, but the images were a lot darker than expected.

I queried this with Apple and they said that they are aware of this problem and that one should overexpose the images in iphoto to compensate. I fond that this is not what I had expected from Apple and thought that there should have been an adjustment made in the program for this.

Buy the way, Apple did give me a refund.

I am in the UK and it looks like the books were printed in Holland.

I would like to order some more books but would like to know if anyone else has had this problem.

I have just received my first iPhoto book (and it's fantastic). I worked on it on two machines using an iPhoto library which is stored on an external USB drive. I use iPhoto Library Manager to force iPhoto to open the correct library.

One option you have is to export the book to PDF and then send that file to a photo book service that will accept PDF format. I haven't tried it but there are several here in Australia that will do that.

Just to throw another experience into the mix...

They're fantastic! For Mother's Day last year, I found lots of old photos in the roofspace, and took them down to mailboxes etc., who scanned the images and copied them to CD. Then fired up iPhoto and put them where I wanted, added the text and all that jazz, sent it off and waited. Such a great surprise for mum - she absolutely loved it.

Just last week, I sat with the girlfriend and did the same thing for her mum as a Christmas present - again, with great results.

The only downside is they don't accept debit cards. I don't have a credit card, so had to resort to using dads.

I'd definitely recommend them to anybody.

As you can probably tell from my above post, I didn't have this problem. My book came from the US, as did the girlfriends. I live in Northern Ireland, so that may have something to do with why the printing location is different.

Is it not possible your photos were too dark? What looked ok in the screen might not have looked great in printed media? I dunno. The photos myself and the girlfriend used were between 15 and 30 years old, in variable condition, and we were very happy with the results when transferred to print (that is, we thought they were a very good likeness to the photos themselves).

My first iPhoto book: beyond expectations. My workflow...

I'm pleased to report that my first iPhoto book, received today, is absolutely fantastic. The quality is beyond my expectations. The photos appear in the book pretty much exactly as they did on screen. Sharp, rich in colour, quite remarkable tonal range for prints.

For the record, I worked on it in iPhoto 8 sometimes on my old Powerbook G4 and sometimes on my daughter's faster MacBook. (Don't ask me why my daughter has a more powerful machine than I do!)

I started by calibrating my monitor(s) using the built in calibration tool in Display settings. (This forum thread talks about using or not using sRGB, which confused me, so I just followed the step by step (in instructions 'expert mode' as best I could. The process made my screen look darker than it had previously but I quickly got used to that.

Workflow on the images was pretty straight forward and all done inside iPhoto. (Even though I have photoshop elements I find flipping between the two a bit slow and wanted to get this book done). I laid the book out then went from one end to the other making fine adjustments on each image. Generally this involved:
  • adjusting the levels
  • fine adjustments to highlights and/or shadows if necessary. (These give a better result than adjusting brightness and contrast I find)
  • slight increase in saturation in some cases (these were red desert pictures which benefited from this)
  • slight adjustment to temperature in some middle of the day shots
  • increase sharpness. I generally used .25 which was a guess but seems to have worked well
  • small reduction in noise only where really necessary.
The only effect I used was 'edge blur' on a few shots.

My book includes a number of stitched panoramas (some across two pages) - which were done in photoshop elements - and a few pages using alternate themes (process described here) .

The only thing I would be more careful about next time is the choice of images near the spine. My book is nearly 30 double-sided pages and close to a centimetre of each page is hidden in the spine. Not a big issue mostly, but you wouldn't want to lose a critical detail in there.

This book appears to have been printed in Germany (based on the postmark) which is a long way from Australia - I don't know if quality varies between countries. Nevertheless, I'll be doing more as soon as I can.

Thanks for the imput. As this is a new mac I would have expected the calibration to be OK. I am now going to calibrate it with an Eye One and see if that makes any difference. I am also beginning to wonder if it has something to do where the books are printed. Has anyone in the UK had this problem?

As a matter of interest, Apples response to my query was as follows:

iPhoto: Image differences between books and prints

* Last Modified: 15 May, 2008

* Old Article: 93298

Summary

This document describes the color process differences that may cause a photo ordered as a print to have slight variations from the same photo in a book.
Products Affected

iPhoto, Photo Services

Because of a difference in the printing process used for printing photos and printing books, you may notice slight variations in color or brightness in a picture ordered as both a print and as a picture in a book.

Prints use a three-color process
Prints ordered through iPhoto are printed using a three-color process. Different shades of three colors are combined to make the full spectrum of colors, including black. Because of this, prints may appear slightly darker than on screen. Some photos may have slight color variations, including:

* Black and white prints have a slight pinkish hue.
* Some whites may have blue undertones.

Books use a four-color printing process
Books ordered through iPhoto are printed using a four-color process. Besides shades of colors, black is also added to the pictures. This may cause pictures in a book to be slightly darker than the same pictures ordered as prints.

There will likely be variations between prints ordered through iPhoto and those printed to a color printer attached to the computer.

Unfortunately, my experience is negative.

I was happy with the express shipping. (Ordered it Saturday, got it on Wednesday the same week). When I opened the FedEx package and pulled out the book, the pages fell out of the spine. The staples were still attached to the pages...just not to the book. Does Apple outsource the making of the books? Even the workmanship was shoddy. There was no glue on the spine itself, so the paper was hanging loose from the cover in the middle.

Also, when we went to look at the pictures, about 2/3rds of the way in the book, it suddenly switched to someone else's wedding pictures for ten pages or so. I have no idea who those people were. They weren't pictures I or anyone else I knew had taken! I'm still waiting on a customer service rep to contact me, so no resolution yet, though hopefully I will be fully refunded.

Wow sucks for you but makes for a pretty funny story at least... hope Apple does right by you on it!

My wife and i have ordered our family Christmas cards from Apple for the last three years. Obviously we are happy with the results. My wife shopped around for custom printed cards and the price is great for the quantity we order. Every year I get comments from family and friends about how great the cards are. I am planning on ordering a book with pictures from my grand daughter's first christmas, so I am glad to hear the books are as good as the cards.

The iPhoto materials used to be printed on 100# McCoy Silk, but I cannot swear they are still using this particular paper. It is a fantastic sheet, though. If they switched, it would be to something equal or superior in brightness, opacity, and surface quality.

Our company produced the soft cover iPhoto books a few years back. It was quite a learning experience for us. The attention to quality is really amazing. I cannot recommend the iPhoto products highly enough. As far as I know, Apple uses a select few US facilities, plus one located in Prague.

In response to Poppe: I made calendars in Iphoto for Christmas presents last year. They turned out fabulously and I would definitely do it again. Was very impressed with the quality of the calendar (paper, construction etc) and the photos looked awesome. The calendars got many compliments. Definitely recommend it to anyone thinking about making one but hasn't yet done so...:)
