I much prefer iPhoto - with it I don't have to worry about file structure and all that crap. I know exactly where a photo is at all times without having to delve deep into folders. Smart albums are awesome and the new events management scheme is a brilliantly thought-out way of minimising the time it takes to find a photo.

I love iPhoto, but I prefer Picasa. It must be the only Windows-only program I haven't been able to fully replace! I like it because my photos are organised already. Is there any way to run it on OS X?

Come on Google, we need Picasa! :)

During travels through the wonderful land of Flickr™, i've noticed some people have posted some nice collages of photos, with a grid-arrangement of square pictures.

I'm told this is something Picasa helps you do.
See here for examples.

Is there anything that will do something similar on the Mac? (I'm especially interested in trying the 'Picture Pile' & 'Picture Grid'). I'm sure this is possible with Photoshop Elements (which I'll try as a last resort if anyone has any tips) but i was hoping for an automated way like Picasa…

Thanks in advance for any advice/links etc. :)

Is Picasa still better than iPhoto 2009?

The last post in this thread is from September 2007 and Picasa has been released on OSX and I guess that new improved versions of iPhoto has also been released.

Is the general opinion still that Picasa is better than iPhoto? How does Picasa work on Mac comparing to on Windows? I have used Picasa for a couple of years on a WinXP computer but have now switched to iMac and deal with the question if I should start using iPhoto instead of Picasa now that I'm in the process of learning to "think the Mac way".

Well, I don't have that much experience with Picasa. I put it on my brother's Windows PC a few weeks ago and set it up for him. That said, I VASTLY prefer iPhoto to Picasa. iPhoto's interface is much simpler and better designed. I've only been using iPhoto for a few months, but I instantly knew how to do everything with it. It's like I had been using it for a long time. With Picasa, I had to google instructions. The interface is sloppy and confusing.

One thing though, Picasa seems to have better facial detection technology than iPhoto.

Whether its better or not I can't say but since installing the very latest update to iPhoto (I'm on 8.1.1) face recognition has dropped off a cliff, its really poor. Before the update, around 50% of the time it would make a suggestion that was correct, now I'm finding that maybe 90% of the time its not even making a suggestion, and of the few it does make many are wildly wrong.

Its rather difficult to drudge up a 2 year old thread and start discussing the bullet items that were already discussed since most of the stuff that was posted is not relevant anymore.

Excuse me, but I'm a little curious what you mean? Do you think it's better to start a new thread with the same title just because some posts in this old thread includes obsolete info? I can't see that I quoted any previous posts or brought up any old functional differences to discussion.

The thread title says "iPhoto vs. Picasa" and I think this main question is as relevant now as it was back in 2007. Also, I said in my post that things must have changed a bit since 2007 and that I want to know what people think now in Q4 2009.
