It would be a shame if Apple killed it but that's progress for you.

The focus for Apple is on iPhones, iPad, iMacs, iPod Touch and Apps Store. Ultimately it's not us who decides it's the sales stats.

Personally I don't see the need to sync 150GB of music onto a mobile juke box, that's way too much. I still use my iPod Mini with just a measly 4GB and keep it hooked up at home to my stereo mostly on Shuffle mode and I'm perfectly happy. For the gym or a cycle, I use my iPod Shuffle 2G which only holds 250 songs, don't have a care about selecting different songs and just keep it on shuffle.

I haven't moved onto a smartphone yet but when I get round to buy an iPhone later this year, I'll use the phone simply just to make calls...browse the web...play games and that's it. I'll still keep my iPod Shuffle for my music when I'm out and about.

If they discontinue the classic, I'll be buying 4th Gen iPods from eBay for the rest of time. I don't feel like paying extra to play games or fiddle with 1,000 gestures just so I can jam some music while I'm biking or working out. Sometimes I just want to listen to music without having to stare at a screen.

I agree with this statement. I would to see Apple make a 10th anniversary iPod. It definitely was a monumental achievement for the company.

I hope it isn't phased out - There should always be room for a pure music player in Apples line up esp as it was the model that started it all

Its perfect for having all your music on or times when you don't want to take your £600 phone out with you

I love my classic, which I bought three years ago. It's still my favorite product of all time because I love my music. I want to take them anywhere I want, my 78 gigs of stuff.

So Apple, please don't discontinue it.

I'm with you here. I have all of my music on it, and I use it to cull through some of the music I haven't listened to in year. I put it on the other day, and a song by the Chili Peppers from One Hot Minute came on that I don't ever remember hearing; it's a new favorite. I'd never have gotten that w/ a smaller model because it just wouldn't have made the cut.

I do the same thing. I made a few smart playlists, one has unplayed music in it, one has under 3 plays another has under 5. Its pretty great. and the awesome shuffle songs button is great. I unplug my headphones, put the thing in its dock and hit go. I have almost 90 gigs of music, i always have something new to listen to.

Hear, hear! ;) I echo this sentiment.

+1

I'll add another good reason for it. Those that travel a lot for work. I'll often go on 7-14 day trips (and often with only a few days of down time between). I have a work laptop, which doesn't have enough room for my music, and I don't feel like carrying a second laptop, or external hard drives when bouncing in and out of airports and hotels. I also don't want to spend what little down time I have between trips managing which songs/vids/podcasts etc. to take for the next trip.

So the classic is gold for me (even though it doesn't hold my entire library)

I only have 12 GB of music.

But I absolutely refuse to buy/use an iPod that can't hold my entire collection.

Who seriously wants to have to pick and choose through a library of 100+ gigabytes of music to sync and resync and pick and choose? My guess is anyone that says "oh just do that, stop whining for a bigger iPod" has never done that.

What a pain in the ass that would be.

I want my iPod to mirror my iTunes. For me, that means iTunes shows 1622 songs, and that also means my iPod needs to show 1622 songs. That's the point of an MP3 player, to take everything with me at all times. If I didn't want to take everything with me, then why wouldn't I just have kept a Discman and taken a different CD with me everyday? Surely that's easier than picking and choosing songs from iTunes and syncing them all the time.

There's really ZERO reasons to make excuses otherwise, this is 2011. The technology is there, it's matured, there's no reason anyone should HAVE to hassle with picking and choosing what to put on their iPod every day/week/month/whatever. If you are happy with a 16 GB nano and having to limit what you take with you, that's fine, but don't assume everyone is fine with that. If that was the case my 4 GB mini would still be my main iPod. I see people saying, "Well you can't listen to all 160 GB at one time so who cares?" as if to say they CAN listen to all 16 GB of what's on their nano at once. Guess what, you can't listen to 4GB of songs at once either, doesn't mean you want to carry only 4GB with you.

It just makes no sense to say a bigger iPod is pointless.

I agree that the iPod Classic should not be discontinued. At present I have around 25GB of music, but I am sure I will be reaching 80GB on my iPod 5.5G soon.

I am one who wants my entire collection with me even when I travel. I tag my music and my smart playlists outnumber my number of songs.

I am sure that in a couple of years, when SSD's would be the only ones available, we would have around 300-500GB and iPod Classics. That would be a killer.

Apple believes in every person having more than one iPod, so I doubt they would discontinue the iPod Classic.

What about those of us that have 200GB in music alone (80% of it 256k quality)?

Although I've done some serious trimming beginning this year, I'm still at 175gb.

wouldnt it be interesting of apple released a new version of this iPod that would make us all remember and want the iPod again?

Doubt it, but it would stir some things up as most people are forgetting apples once flagship product.

YES

The iPod is about music, pure and simple, I think it's about time Apple gets back to that.

Also, nowadays everyone has a smartphone that does everything the iPod Touch can do, non-music-wise. I'll leave all the extras to my phone, which I always have on me, and is always connected to the internet and GPS. Give me my iPod when I want an all-out, hard-core, portable music player.

The demand for a pure and simple capacity music player is only going to rise with the popularization of smart phones, and while the iPod Classic is still a great option, it could really use an update.

Up capacity of Classic

Apple: put the best DAC in the next classic and up the hardrive so we do not have to go to outside companies to get the toshiba mod that gives us 240 Gigs in the older thick case classic. Many folks out there have pretty large collections in itunes. (With 10,000 CDs only a portion go on my classic....)
On itunes I have over 60,000 songs and am slowly converting all to lossless. I use this with a $1000 Peachtree DAC that bypasses the internal apple So-so DAC as does my headphone amp (portable) A 220Gig classic would be snapped up by me in a moment. These Classics are used to power whole house audio systems around the world. Dont kill the classic!!!!
