I love my iPod classic. I need the larger drive. I carry movies and music with it. Personally I hope they don't discontinue it. It's also an excellent back up of my iTunes library. I can see why some might not need it. But what is the harm in having the option for those that want it?

I'd be surprised if Apple discontinues the Classic. It's just so...classic.

Please don't discontinue it Apple. :( If you want to get rid of the silver version to save on costs, that's totally fine. But please don't discontinue the iPod Classic altogether.

It should have been axed a long time ago IMO, it makes so sense to make it bigger - makes more sense to axe it, and make the iPod touch 128GB.

And it would make no sense to charge over $1k for an iPod touch. Because that's how much it would cost to fill it with 128GB of flash storage. I have no doubt that it will one day happen, and "iPod touch" will probably be renamed "iPod", but that day is not here yet. Flash storage is getting much better every generation (the next generation will be on the market very soon) but it's still far from the $1 per GB ideal hot spot.

:( I don't want to see it go, It's also one of the last iPods with buttons, and it sucks to see them go, I have to go through a Shuffle and selecting just my music in order to get the "Luxury" of buttons that work without crashing into a wall with my car of running a dog over on my bike

What is my dream?

No more iPod Classic. iPod Touch will be; ''the iPod'' 32 GB/64 GB/128 GB
The new nano: It's iPod Nano 5 gen without clickwhell. Just touch screen. Camera no wifi, radio, music photos, videos. kind of games. 8 GB/16 GB
The shuffle. Old Nano. 6 gen. is new shuffle. 4 GB/8 GB

How about instead of discontinuing it, make an iPod Classic Touch or something... basically a thicker iPod Touch with a ton of storage so the Classic can be more useful, that way people with a ton of music can still enjoy it through a Touch while Apple waits for flash memory to advance...

I don't think Apple will phase it out...

The shortages of the silver may be because distributers still have the more unpopular black model, and Apple has stopped supplying them due to an impending upgrade... But that's wishful thinking!

I wouldn't consider the classic to be the go to iPod anymore in terms of ultimate portability, but I would love to get an updated version for a "home base" system. It's the perfect way to store your entire library for a home system, because you CAN take it with you. I already have a 32GB iPhone 4, so what the hell is the point of another iOS device?

We'll see. I hope they're here to stay.

Some people don't want an 128 GB iPod touch. They want an iPod classic. Maybe I like Big Macs and not Whoppers.

I keep two iPod Classic in my car. One has video and one has audio. I can connect either one to my stereo and either listen to music or watch movies or TV shows or music videos through my decks video screen.

Long live the Classic. It's great for road trips.

Like who listens to over 100 GB of music?

This probably covers a small percentage of audience, maybe 0.0001%...
No one LISTENS to 100gb of music. They keep it with them to HAVE with them and there it is, when they need it. Take today, for example. I just got an itch to listen to some Weather Report. When's the last time I listened to them? Not sure. A while back. Would I have had that on a smaller, size-limited Ipod or my Iphone? Certainly not. But it's on my beloved 160gb Classic (the sad, flawedm glitchy 2007 model, too.) And I'm listening right now. That happens nearly every day.

We're not all alike. Some people love to listen to the same 10 albums over and over and over. I like a tremendous variety of music, and so do others. I've tried living with only my 32gb Iphone (really 20+gb after apps, photos, videos, etc.) and I just can't do it. It's too limiting. I can't predict what I'll be in the mood for. Inevitably, no matter whatever is on there, there will be something I desperately want to hear and it's not there.

I don't think Apple is going to abandon us. Maybe the Classic as we know it will go away, but we'll get something similar in return. They know they have a bunch of music/video lovers who depend on these large capacity players who will seek out one of the rivals who do continue building them. My guess and hope is we'll see a 128gb flash-based "Classic." Smaller, yes, but so much faster and more reliable. It'll maintain the click wheel and basic form factor because that's an Apple icon, and people still love it. It might be a bit more expensive, but that's okay. I'd pay a bit more for that, even though it's less space.

Until the larger flash drives become affordable for large libraries, I hope they keep this option alive. But I would like it with a Touch sized screen with a hard drive. Like a "Mega" Touch, so you could store tons of movies with your music and games. Essentially transport your entire library on a Touch interface.

Understandable but if they do discontinue, I'm glad I picked my 160GB up last year. Still my second most used gadget after the iPhone, I don't like touch screens for music on the move not to mention the storage limit

I agree that no one listens to the whole 100GB's of music, but I still like to have all my music for those days that I want to listen in shuffle and hit a song I use to love years ago.=)

Late last month, we noted that Toshiba had introduced new 1.8-inch hard drives topping out at 220 GB and carrying the same form factor used in the existing iPod classic. With Apple's iPod classic currently coming in at 160 GB, the capacity bump would be a substantial one if Apple elected to adopt the new drives.

With that information floating around, observers have been keeping their eyes on stock levels for the iPod classic, hoping to see some indication of a change in availability. AppleBitch has found just that information, seeing shipping estimates from Apple and other vendors slipping in recent days, primarily for the silver model.Questions remain, of course, about what this information might mean. Apple's product availability does tend to ebb and flow as the company manages its finely-tuned inventory channels, although such delays are sometimes indicative of upcoming changes to Apple's product lines.

And even if the tightening supplies do indicate a forthcoming change, it is unknown whether that change might be refreshed models carrying the new larger-capacity drives or if Apple may simply finally be discontinuing the iPod classic. The iPod classic has not been updated in nearly 18 months, and Apple CEO Jobs notably reported at the company's September 2010 iPod-focused event that Apple was introducing an "all-new" iPod lineup. That statement came even as the iPod classic remained untouched, suggesting that Apple might simply be relegating the iPod classic to the back burner and potentially phasing it out.

Man, I really hope they don't kill it. Though, I'll agree that when the iPod touch's capacity rivals the Classic, there'll be no reason to keep the classic around.

praying for the larger screen, bigger hd, smaller scroll wheel classic, 10th anniversary edition in WHITE! i miss old apple.

I'll be having a few sad thoughts when it's gone. I really liked my ridiculously expensive iPod 3G, but, yeah, it's old now and the Touch is so much better, so I'm not looking back.
:)

How easy is it to navigate though that much music to find something?

Actually not hard at all. I have about 12K songs on my 80GB and I can generally find what I want within a few seconds. I don't know how much of a market there is for those of us who really do want to carry a huge library, but the R & D cost for click wheel based iPods has long since been recovered. There has to be a huge profit margin in the ones they do sell.

I can see myself buying a touch or an iPhone in the next year or so, and I am in the market for an iPad (most likely) or a honeycomb based tablet (less likely) as soon as I see what the iPad 2 brings to the table, but I think I will still want to keep a high capacity player as I really want to have the choice of what I listen to all the time.

How easy is it to navigate though that much music to find something? That's the reason I have been staying with the Nano's.

Or learn how to better manage their files.

Anyway I am glad I haven't pulled the trigger yet and upgrade my 3rd gen Nano.

It's seriously easy. When you the wheel fast enough, the letters start scrolling by a-z making it easy to fin what you want. When you get to the letter, you slow down the scrolling and go right to the artist and then the CD and or song.

I have an iPod Classic. I think it has 80 GB. I bought it because I prefer having all of my music with me at all times. That way I can be in the car, at work, at the gym or at a party and play whatever I want. I use my iPhone 4 32GB at the gym and I am already pretty tired of the reduced selection of music it has.

Unfortunately, I now have more than 80GB of music on my MacBook Pro. So I can't update my iPod Classic without choosing a subset of my music. (So it's been sitting there collecting dust.) I should probably get a bigger iPod. I guess I will wait to see if indeed a new model comes out. If not, I suppose I could get a iPod Touch, though it costs a lot more.

Ideally, I wish my iPhone had a big enough capacity to hold everything. 160 GB at least.

Heck, I still have my 40gb 1st gen collecting dust. Charge it once in awhile. Moved on to an iPod touch. But some folks like the original form factor and don't see why apple couldn't keep it but replace the hard drive with what the iPod touch uses, but make it with more memory. Would get more battery life. Apple can keep the same thickness to double the memory capacity.

Hey, check out this song! Which one? Oh wait, I don't have it on my iPod. Why? Because this stupid thing only carries 64GB, and I honestly CBA selecting my music every time I sync it.

The Classic is still useful, especially since it's cheaper than the Touch, and does what people who listen to music want it to do: carry music.

I own a Classic, and am very happy that Apple has kept it around.

Let's hope we get a fun 10th anniversary model before Steve decides the "old" tactical interface is dead.

Exactly. If I want to carry 2TB of music then I should be able to. It's not about using it but having easy access to it.
