The Newton is to iPhone as Google Glass is to _______

I think there will eventually be an answer to that statement and it'll probably be pretty cool once it gets here.

Agreed. Letting Google acquire Nest was a strategic mistake that'll have long term repercussions. Nest could've been the centre hub for HomeKit. I understand that Apple doesn't want to grow to having a large product matrix but they could've kept Nest running as an independent company making homekit devices.

Google not only got the product, they got Fadell.

Seems obvious to me that TV will be the hub for HomeKit.

I don't think Tony Fadell can do anything with that stupid idea, unless it's made for Surgeons or some other industry where they already wear something on their face. Glass showed how terrible Google is at product-ization. You can't just get a guy who's made good products in the past and give him a steaming pile and say, "Make it successful."

For as enormous as its potential is, we're going to need a considerably more modernized world to live in before this becomes useful and appealing on a mass scale. This is a bit cart before horse.

I do agree with you. I am a self professed Fanboi. However I was excited about the possibilities of wearable tech, including glass. With computing devices becomes very ubiquitous over the past few decades it seems that wearable "smart" devices will be the natural progression (my doctoral dissertation is based on mobile learning theory and its anytime/anywhere learning model). Having ubiquitous devices will be a benefit to the anytime/anywhere model of mLearning.

Because imo, the Nest product line is a natural fit for Apple. Now they have a great engineer, great products and can only strengthen their home products where as Apple doesn't have any

Perhaps it wasn't a good culture fit for Apple. Or Apple's working on their own home automation stuff. Sounds like there are issues with Fadell's management style.

Goofy glasses look goofy.

As a concept, it was interesting. In practice, people don't like having always on cameras around, and it's just weird to talk to your own face.

I think with Fadell heading up google glass, it can only improve things.
Frankly, I think if my cousin Tom was heading up Google Glass it could only improve things...

There's not a high bar to clear here...

You seem to be unaware of the fact that Glass has been around for a few years and nobody cares. I knew a grand total of one person with a pair, and that was amoungst everyone in CE or CS at my university last year.

Give it time.

Phones will morph into wearables soon enough, and the will not all be watches.

I am not saying that Glass will be the one the breaks through and makes wearables mainstream. But one will soon enough.

Damnit, you beat me to it.

Seriously, everything this guy ever does involves wheels as the main input.

Wasn't he the guy who made the rotary iPhone that Steve Jobs mocked on stage when unveiling the actual iPhone?

He was the one pushing for iPhone to run a version of iPod software. Thankfully Bertrand Serlet and Scott Forstall won out. I'm not sure why Apple needs him. Seems like people are saying that just because Google acquired him. If we want to talk about acquisitions Apple should've made I think Waze tops the list, not Nest.

Captain of a sinking ship. Glass has as much mainstream potential as the Segway, and for obvious and similar reasons.

Apple was a fool for not acquiring Nest.

I'm still shocked that apple dropped the ball and failed to snag Nest when they had the chance.

Letting Google acquire Nest was a strategic mistake that'll have long term repercussions.

And we know that Nest wanted to be bought by Apple?

Not sure why folks are criticizing Apple for not acquiring Nest? Fadell was not needed and there are plenty of creative minds still at Apple that can produce new and amazing products.

Fadell on the other hand is about to get marginalized at Google and has been stuck in a dead end position. Basically, they now put him in charge of a failed product that he did not create and gave him a task to revive it. That's a pretty tough task and he could be made to be the fall guy when he fails to deliver.

Someone like Fadell needs to have complete creative freedom to come up with something new and unique. That is where he excels.

Hear hear.

I can only see this product being useful for surgeons, technicians, mechanics, and similar highly specialized use case situations. MAYBE law enforcement. Appealing to the general public though? Don't see it happening anytime soon, if ever.

And in other news, Samsung just hired the head of Tangerine, a design consultancy. Jony Ive was the 3rd partner in that firm before he was hired by Apple.

I'm still struggling to understand the appeal of the "smart thermostat". I have a programmable thermostat but I don't even use that. I turn the heat up when I get up, I turn it down when I go to bed. Is there really any more to it than that?

Fadell left Apple to work on a side project.
Fadell would have left Apple again to work on another side project.

I imagine that it would be hard to work with Jony and the probable clash of development/design ideas would be uncomfortable and unpleasant.

To be creative you must follow your own path.

Yeah, it seems to just be Popular Science magazine fodder.

Same, the programmable thermostat is enough. Not even necessary if you have a thermostat control in each room.

My guess is he left because Serlet and Forstall won out and he never really had ownership of iPhone. Once iPod was no longer the hot product what reason was there for him to stay? Let's not forget he told the BBC that Forstall "got what he deserved" so clearly there was no love lost between those two.

Regarding the Nest, I have yet to talk to anyone who loves it...they tell me it's OK and doesn't always work that well.

We have two. It was our first purchase when we bought a new house, as I had to leave the first one in our previous house.

My wife loves it because she doesn't have to get out of bed to turn up the heat. However, we don't use the learning mode. We use the app to set our desired schedule, and adjust as necessary.

We also just installed the Skylark app on our phones: it sets the Nest's to "away" mode as soon as we leave the house, instead of waiting for an hour or so of no detected motion.

Google Glass will never become mainstream. Who is going to go around wearing a pair of these? Societal perceptions matter, now whether that is a good or bad thing may be up for debate, but it does.

Now, a contact lens, yes, that is a breakthrough product that appeals to everyone. Who knows how far away from that we are though.. Probably years and years.

Apple is being criticized for releasing a watch that costs $350.00 minimum, looks better and does more than the Google Glass which costs $1500.00?

The concept is inherently creepy. The way to overcome the creep factor is to figure out how make it hip to be creepy. This isn't as difficult as it sounds.
