oooooOOoooo, i'm not crapping on your opinion, but i think you reply was inappropriate.

"don't need a helmet cam" would have been enough. but if you would have had maybe just one second thought on the helmet cam, you may have found one or two reasons why the combination of a small video recorder and a freakin' helmet cam is quite good.

enough of helmet cams. i just thought that most of the replies were inappropriate/bias.

the question is, does Apple can make me do want a video player?

macenforcer, just one question...are you trying to pick a fight?

I agree that the Archos is a killer portable movie player, and I think that most people would agree that it does its job well. The problem I see here is your smug attitude and your inclination to insult anyone whose opinion on anything differs even the slightest.

First you insult anyone who doesn't watch TV, and then you let fly at Yellow because he doesn't like the idea of a helmet cam. I hope you aren't questioning why you're getting such a negative reaction. It's not that this thread is rife with Apple fan-boys, it's that you've been provoking people all along by making highly opinionated posts and refusing to acknowledge any differing points of view.

Umm, ok. What do you think a helmet cam does? And no it doesn't have to sit on your helmet.

Thanks, I'm fully aware of what a helmet cam does.

However, it seemed to me that you put it forth as a 'wicked improvement' on existing technology, a claim that I refute. I would think the market would be selling a lot more Archoses and helmet cams than regular hand-held camcorders if this were actually the case.

I think my point was the comparison of a small source video camera such as the aforementioned "helmet cam" and a consumer hand-held "video camera" was rather ridiculous. Something you apparently don't share. So I leave you to your opinion, your Archos, and your helmet cam. I'm sure those upskirt videos will sell well.

Especially with "iPod getting a butt woopin"
Sales figures say otherwise. Especially since the Archos is a very niche product, most people don't want or need all those features especially with the form factor.

Maybe you should re-read the thread.

So lets hear from all the whiners on this thread. What do you want the ipod to be for version 6? I know, it will just be the features in the Archos or the moto. You guys don't think the ipod is a little long in the tooth at this point? Come on. No radio, no recording, small screen, scratch prone to death. The ipod has some major faults. Its a great mp3 player but I can think of hundreds of great mp3 players out there.

Maybe you should re-read the thread.

Okay, I just re-read, and here's what I found:

Don't need it? Well then I guess you have a 4g ipod or less right? Come on. You can't deny the power of the Archos. It RECORDS video.

macenforcer said:
Hehe, so many loyalists. I'll be enjoying my video goodness while you guys wait it out.

macenforcer said:
But heh, it doesn't have the apple logo so it sucks right?

macenforcer said:
So basically all the posts are going to be "I don't need all that great video recording goodness, I'm happy with my shuffle". Please ok.

macenforcer said:
So if you don't need it because you don't watch videos, and you don't record anything and you don't watch tv then .... I feel sorry for you.

Umm, I call bull on this. Mine sits in my pocket all day with my keys and it doesn't have a single scratch. The screen is GLASS. YOu would have to have diamonds in your pocket to mess it up like that. I think you got the phones confused.

Yep, I'm sticking to my guns on this one.

Sure, just my posts. Nice and petty cutting and pasting and all. Jeez. Some people. Doesn't take away from the fact the Archos kicks the ipods butt.

Oh my God...do you even bother reading what anyone has to say?

I agree that the Archos is a killer portable movie player, and I think that most people would agree that it does its job well.

I've had enough of this. Enjoy your Archos, macenforcer

Oh, come on... It's obvious that you're losing this one. I was sure you were one of those annoying 13-year-olds with a new toy until you mentioned your kids. Are you for real??

Couple ?'s regarding the Archos and helmet cam.
I snowboard and while I can ride and film it is not ideal or that safe, nor the best results, so I would really be interested in a helmet cam solution.

Is the archos player (does it have to be a 604) and helmet cam the best helmet cam solution or would a helmet cam connected to another recording device be a better option. I saw a helmet cam online not too long ago but honestly don't remember what it recorded to. may have been an internal flash that later you downloaded via usb.

anyone know how well the archos helmet cam would work? I know it mentions extreme sports but it is cold up there and cold is a factor. My camcorder sucks on the mountain because it is a tape moving along a head. I have found that video on digital cameras is always better because it is recording straight to a card. and since the archos is a HDD, how does that come into play. if you have any ideas, info, please share.

lastly, video recording - resolution, frame rate, and capacity. plus you mentioned switching out the drive. i'm assuming 2.5" not 1.8". what speed.

thanks.

Yeah, I'm losing.:p What am I losing. A bunch of jealous apple fans are pissing all over this thread, you included, and are just scared to admit that some other company is doing it better than apple. But hey, what did I expect its an apple forum. No thinking different here. Follow the machine kids.

The drive is a 2.5 and is swappable. I got a 120gb in there with firmware 1.555. But that is for the 504 model. The 604 uses a 1.8 drive.

Video is 640x480 at 30fps. Its very good video. Had mine going all day in the snow and no problem. Its a great little device. Its a do it all though. If you are really rough out there you might want to try a different solution or keep the archos in a nice bag with padding.

So you want everyone to admit that that archos is doing better then apple?

You wish we were jealous. Maybe that was your whole motive when creating this thread. "Look at me!!! I just got an Archos!!! Wheee!!! Oh wait, I got another one and it's got a helmet cam!!!

Maybe we don't want a video player... Ever thought of that? Maybe we want something small and slim to listen to music while jogging and maybe watch an occasional video clip while traveling.

Do the world a favor and don't raise your kids to become like you.

Hahaha. This post is screaming JEALOUSY!

Yeah, I don't really need the player so much as the ability to record video so I'm not sure that this my best route. Wouldn't be worried about damage as I don't really eat it much.

And as far as the archos v ipod debate, in Apple's defense a lot of people on MR want the latest and greatest and want it yesterday as evidenced by the C2D threads, however Apple does a pretty good job of waiting until they are happy with their product prior to delivering to market. They are not usually interested in being the first out there at the sacrifice of being happy with what they put out, esp. when one of their main goals is a complete experience that makes it easy to use. I sometimes miss the Apple of old that catered to the knowledgable user more rather than some of the new stuff where I have to learn all sorts of things to make things work the way I want them to. But all that said I think that it is usually worth the wait for their stuff. The archos seems like a great product though and if portable HDD video playback was something I was really interested in right now I would probably get one this xmas. Let us know how you like it over time.

just thought i would note

i was doing a quick once over of the website for this player and noticed that to recieve all the wonderful features that it has to offer such as the dvr, the helmet cam and wifi you must shell out over 700$

personally i dont think that i would use it enough to merit spending that kind of money

Its not cheap if you get all the accessories but its nice to know they are available. Thats the beauty of the archos, you don't have to buy them all.

The ipod is 4.1 x 2.4 x .43, weighing in at 4.8 oz.

Your wifi archos is 5.2 x 3.1 x .7, weighing in at 10.23 oz.

I'm glad that you're happy with your archos. It does look like a nice device. Maybe what really matters to you is helmet cams, dvrs, and whatever other technical do-dads you're so excited about. So for you, the archos is the best choice out there.

Personally, I don't care one bit about those features, but do care about size, weight, form-factor, style, interface, ease of use, and top-to-bottom integration. Thus, for me, an iPod is a vastly superiour choice. (And based on Apple's sales as compared to Archos', apparently I'm not alone in my thinking on this one.)

Your problem is that you assume that everyone's needs and wants are the same as yours, and thus that anyone who makes a different choice from you is doing so out of ignorance. The archos is clearly superior to the ipod in some ways, and it's clearly way behind in others. It's nice to have choices.

Archos has always been several steps ahead of everyone on the feature side of portable video players. I think their lack of success has to do with the small demand for portable video players, the relative clunkiness of the players and of course the lack of marketing.

They used to have some huge clunky players with 2.5" drives. I haven't looked at their players recently, but they've never appealed to me before.

I don't see how its behind the ipod in anything technically. Size and weight? How about the screen being 3 times larger? Anyways, you are right. If you don't need that functionality a regular old manilla ipod will suit you well but this thread started out as a way for people wanting a true video large screen ipod to get it now. I think everyone is losing site of that fact.
