That's what these are for. Now if Beretta would only release them in "iPod white", Apple could sell them as accessories.

that's about the funniest thing i've seen all day :) tho i'd prefer an iPod White Glock, you know, I just think Glocks are to guns what Macs are to computers. But that's a separate thread...

God, think of the fingerprints those guns would show!

Lacero's right, iPod theft will drop per-capita as more people are "targets", and as they become commonplace theft will drop even more. I mean, mugging and fencing has always been a problem, but I find it hard to believe iPods will be responsible for a serious, long-term increase in crime.

True, most criminals will not attempt to mug you unless they think it is worth their while.. I think the point here is that if you have an iPod out, in the open, staring at it with your full attention, then you are inviting someone to mug you.

somebody finally gets it!!!

especially if its a kid or a girl on the tube in london? some of these people dont seem to think having a very expensive looking ipod playing a movie would entice a drug addict or alcoholic to mug you and sell it.

Long-term crime? We don't even have to be that specific.

Lets just conclude that "iPod Muggings Will Go Through The Roof" is probably a bit of an overstatement and be done with it. ;)

ipod muggings, i take i people have not read about the number of muggings of ipod users?

THOSE ipod muggings will go through the roof, by that i mean increase greatly, when it happens in going to post the article in this thread and wait... for nobody to reply

Yes, but if I'm listening to music, why would I have my iPod out? What you're saying is that it may not enter a pocket for some reason, and must always be out and in plain sight

It's the same with anything valuable in public: nice phone, PSP, iPod>video iPod, getting out £100/£200 in cash from an ATM and not being too subtle about it...

I think it's a fair point, but then, you've just gotta take due care, yet strike a balance between complete paranoia and living your life. The video iPod will be a target, just like the regular one is/was.

O/T: Black headphones with the black one would mix it up a bit IMO, but the white ones just seem too iconic to mess with - yet.

please point out to me where i have said that

im saying, WHEN YOUR WATCHING VIDEO you will have your ipod out. i clearly stated listening to music in your pocket is safer than having it out in the open

thats the whole point.

Nah, you want one of these, much cooler and more powerful

Or one of these:

(Slightly) On topic, I agree. I was going to buy an iPod 5G but then i realised that the UK has no iTMS TV shows to download. Yet. I hope the BBC will add its catalog soon. Also. really, when are you going to watch video on your ipod; train journeys, car trips, plane flights, basically long trips when you are sittig still. I mean, during my day i hardly sit still. I would love a 5G iPod, but I have no use for it.

Yes but when the CC is stolen, the owner will usually cancel that account rendering it useless. That iPod will still work. That iPod will still contain music. That iPod can still be sold for what would be a profit for that thief.
That's a really good point.

Maybe it would be cool to have an anti-theft system for the iPod. Like a secret code (different from the screen lock it currently has) that needs to be entered occasionally, or something.

It would be inconvienent for the real owner to enter a code all the time, so that wouldn't work. Something that doesn't cause inconvienence, but something similar to a password that cannot be erased.

How about a biometric implant in the center of the wheel. Program it once with your thumbprint and then it will not work for any but you.

I take personal offense to that. I am an alcoholic and I would never steal your iPod. Why you you always have to hate on the little man? Why?

Oh, ;) ;), I was sort of joking....only sort of

On that note, the Nano has this little safe/lock program on it. Any word of that coming down the pipe in firmware updates to other models? I think it would be awesome to be able to lock the content on my iPod just in case.

(Inherently weak because it auto-disables when synced to a computer, but still a step towards defense)

Bit big to go in your pocket though, don't you think..?

That's the main reason I stopped using my Apache gunship anti-mugging device, the rotors kept making holes in my jacket and i couldn't hear the iPod over the turbine noise... ;)

No one will be mugging people for their video iPods on planes, since the thieves never get far... :)

usually they parachute away.

iPod mugging going through the roof in planes is what worries me most, actually. You know, with the decompression and all...

edit: of course, that could lead to something like:

and the circle is closed...

At least this won't ruin yor clothes, and it works as a hand warmer in winter, and it can vapourise your mugger, his home, possessions, extended family, and nation of birth in one shot (2 max.)

This is getting ridiculous. Once and for all, the perfect anti-mugging device.

People who can't legally pack heat could wear something like this...

How about a board with a nail in it ?

I would think that if you were listening to your iPod while walking or something, it be great for a pickpocket to take your wallet or something, since you are pseudo distracted when he bumps into you. Plus it shows you are a good spender.

It's much more low key than stealing something that attached to someones ears.

And Lacero, you're Death Star isn't even completed yet. Plus we all know it just takes a couple of photon torpedos down a shaft to destroy the whole thing. What if someone mugged you at photon torpedo-point.
