I don't think there's much room for improvement on either of these other than storage capacity.

Don't know about the touch, But the Classic and Nano have a horrible UI! It's really slow and if you don't have proper album art it throws up the ugly music symbol.

I'll stick with my 5th gen ipod untill a better UI comes out. I hope it will in September.

Wolfson Microelectronics makes DACS and chips for music reproduction. And its products are used in high-end hi-fi components. Just one of the reasons the iPod doesn't half sound good. This suggests to me that Apple is going for a cheaper DAC, with the result that sound quality could be compromised in ew products.

What do you guys and women think?

That's exactly what I was thinking. For me the iPod was such a killer product because it not only held all your music, but had excellent sound quality. It'd be sad if that were sacrificed to pay for yet more bells and whistles.

You kidding me? Current iPods sound terrible. Compare them to the 1st Gen iPod Shuffle. Now that's a nice souding iPod. The new ones sound pretty bad in comparison, you can't even use the EQ because you get clipping when the one fader is above 0dB... Wolfson might make some high end HiFi stuff, but the chips in iPods must be rock bottom end. On the other end, the iPod earbuds kind of compensate for the bad sound :)

Is this so? That's worrying. My 3G iPod sounds terrific...

An integrated iphone and touch would be really useful, and I reckon there'd be a market for a touch screen nano. The main thing for me is space, though - so a bigger touch would be *really* nice.

Yeah, they need to change it back to the hold form factor. Anyone I know who wants a nano are buying them used b/c they don't like the new form factor.

this is very true...i just got a used 2nd gen 8gb one from ebay last week...the whole fat design is so aesthitically ugly as well as it being difficult to get a firm grasp on it. Ive listened to a friends and it's slipped from my hands many times with that weird paint apple uses on it.

Not sure about the more bells and whistles... probably just less cost (to Apple). One reason why I like iPods is because of the Wolfson chipset... bleh.

Seriously now,and aside from the fun of speculating to come up with cool new ideas ;)

D'you guys think there's a significant possibility that Apple will get rid of the nano with the physical buttons? I just wanted to know because I'd like a really small music/media player like the nano, but with physical means of changing track and volume and pausing/resuming the music, so I can use the controls even with the player in my pocket (ok, even if it takes me a little practice to get there). So that even if they were to keep the non-touch controls on the big ipod, it would still be no good to me because of the size.

I'm asking because if it's Highly Likely this will happen, I might think seriously about getting the nano before they get a chance to do that :)

Goodbye old fashion scroll wheel iPod. Say hello to the new iPod nano touch. Also the classic will be discontinued pretty soon too. Because of all the awesome apps that will be coming out only for the touch/iPhone, developers will discontinue making games for the old fashioned iPods. Everyone is going to want a touch screen iPod. My prediction for September/ October revision:

2 GB Shuffle ($49)
8 GB nano touch w/ smaller screen ($149)
16 GB nano touch w/ smaller screen ($199)
32 GB iPod touch ($299)
64 GB iPod touch ($499)

16 GB iPhone ($299)
32 GB iPhone ($399).

I agree with some of your predictions corywolf, but not all. This is my reading of the Qtr 3 2008 revision I am predicting

2GB Shuffle ($49/£29)
4GB Shuffle ($69/£45)

8GB Nano ($149/£89)
16GB Nano ($199/£119)

16GB iPod touch ($299/£189)
32GB iPod touch ($399/£249)
64GB iPod touch ($499/£299)

100GB iPod Classic ($229/£139)
160GB iPod Classic ($299/£189)

8GB iPhone ($199/£119)
16GB iPhone ($299/£189)

16GB iPhone Pro ($399/£249)
32GB iPhone Pro ($499/£299)

As you will see I believe that there will be a larger Shuffle than currently; I don't think the Nano will be "touch" this yr (I expect that in 2009 revision); Agree with you on the Touch range; I still think the Classic will be around but with larger drive in base model and slightly cheaper; the big change is with the iPhone - splitting it into two sectors (iPhone & iPhone Pro(or similar)). Heavily reducing the entry price point for iPhone to sub $200, but allowing for the iPhone Pro to retain current pricing, but have all the revision 2.0 features i.e 3g, gps, oled screen etc. Lets see how it pans out, starting from June WWDC where I expect iPhone Pro to be announced. :D

Nice. I'm looking for a replacement for my first Generation Nano... the battery life is on about 1 hour! - but i love the look of it compared to the new nano so i'll probably get a ipod touch instead.

I'd imagine we'll be seeing more storage space made available on the iPod Touch, the nano....hmmm.....not sure what they'd be doing to that though, but there's no way it'll get any touch screen functions...probably just more space too!

yep the 2nd gen refurb nanos are definitely hoardable items now. I haven't seen them the last couple weeks but Apple had them in February and they were flying out of the store. They seem the best nanos, really. Especially the 4gig ones, plenty of room for a rich choice of music, and in an iSkin duo case, practically indestructible.

I will like seeing where they go next on the nano, but I think that 2nd gen form will always remain my favorite.

And I don't know what some posters mean by "obsolete" when it comes to iPods. My 2nd gen touchwheel and my clickwheels all still work fine. The touchwheel seems to have the best sound quality of all my iPods, actually. It was worth getting a new battery for it just for that reason.

i dont know if its just me, but i really hate the 3rd generation nanos
i want something that can hold all my music (my 4gb 2nd gen nano cant hold my 7gb) but the new nanos are way too small and impractical

i wish they made an ipod that was about the size of an ipod classic, maybe smaller, BUT also had FLASH MEMORY
